UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

Computer matching is a powerful data surveillance tool widely used by government agencies since its emergence in 1976. Computer matching involves the merger of data from multiple sources: data gathered for different purposes, subject to different definitions, and of variable quality. It is a mass dataveillance technique, for its purpose is to generate suspicions that errors, misdemeanors or fraud have occurred. For many years, computer matching activities were carried out in semi-secrecy. Corporate Initiatives: A Second Human Rights Revolution?, Douglass Cassel

Fordham International Law Journal

This Essay examines the role of multinational corporations in protecting human rights around the globe. Part I analyzes the conduct of corporations, describes examples of corporations' involvement in human rights violations, and discusses the merits of greater responsibility of corporations. Part II suggests that the level of responsibility for a multinational corporation depends on the proximity of the corporation's operations to human rights violations, in combination with the seriousness of the violations, and proposes five gradations of responsibility. On June 5, 1992, the Convention on Biological Diversity was introduced for signature at the so-called "Earth Summit" in Rio de Janeiro. The Convention was one of four international agreements proposed at the Earth Summit. The Convention's explicit objectives are to conserve the Earth's biological diversity (or "biodiversity") for future generations, to exploit this biodiversity in a sustainable way and to share the benefits of biodiversity in a fair and equitable manner.
