Prior to December 1938, Patrick Hamilton wrote an original play entitled "Gaslight" which subsequently was published, performed and protected by copyright in both England and the United States. Loew's acquired exclusive motion picture rights to the play on October 7, 1942, and produced an original feature-length motion picture photoplay of the drama, also entitled "Gaslight." In 1945 Jack Benny sought and received permission to produce a 15-minute parody of the motion picture for his radio program. In 1953, without securing Loew's permission, Benny produced a 15-minute filmed parody of the motion picture for his television program. It was entitled "Autolight" …

The Legal Status Of Joint Venture Corporations, Thomas F. Broden, Alfred L. Scanlan
Vanderbilt Law Review
American industry employs many forms of business organizations. The sole proprietorship, the partnership, general and limited, the joint venture, the joint stock company, the corporation, public issue and close, and many others are all familiar and well established in their use. This article deals with the use by American industry of the close corporation to carry on a joint venture. With due deference to purists in legal terminology we have elected to refer to this particular type of corporate entity as the joint venture corporation. In this article we not only look at the use made of the joint venture …

Congressional Committee Reports: Their Role And History, Thomas F. Broden
Congressional Committee Reports: Their Role And History, Thomas F. Broden
Journal Articles
Most lawyers have an extremely limited understanding of the function of a congressional committee report. In general, lawyers think of such reports as aids to the interpretation of statutes on the books and much has been written about this role of the committee report. This role is considered by many as the committee report's primary, if not its only, function. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is the purpose of this article to explain its other, more important roles, those in the legislative process and to examine the historical development of the use of written committee reports in …
Trading Stamps, Josiah Baker
Trading Stamps, Josiah Baker
Vanderbilt Law Review
It is as hard to define the trading stamp as it is to count the points on the circumference of a circle, for a trading stamp is what it appears to be and that, of course, depends upon point of view. To the housewife,it is a coupon--in some instances free, in others expensive--for which a redemption value may be claimed. To the stamp-issuing merchant,it is a method of advertising taking the form of a promotional device or operating as a discount to cash customers. To the nonissuing merchant, it is an instrumentality of unfair competition. To the trading stamp company, …

Current Trends In State Legislation 1955-1956, University Of Michigan Law School
Current Trends In State Legislation 1955-1956, University Of Michigan Law School
Michigan Legal Studies Series
This third volume in our Current Trends series contains an even dozen studies of recent state statutes. In our judgment each problem studied is unique enough to merit serious consideration by state legislatures and others interested in state legislative enactments. The purpose of these monographs is to call attention to these statutes and to provide a scholarly and objective appraisal and analysis of the problem involved and the solution adopted. We continue to think, as we did when we started this series, that there is a very real need for such studies of new state statutes and that our studies …
The Conflict Of Laws: A Comparative Study. Volume Four Property: Bills And Notes: Inheritance: Trusts: Application Of Foreign Law: Lntertemporal Relations, Ernst Rabel
Michigan Legal Studies Series
With this fourth and final volume, the monumental survey of existing systems of conflicts law, initiated by the late Ernst Rabel in 1939 under the auspices of the American Law Institute but conducted after 1942 through the generous sponsorship of the University of Michigan Law School, is completed. It is most fortunate that, despite the fact that the present volume was prepared in various institutions during the years immediately preceding the author's death on September 7, 1955, he not only finished but also revised the proofs of the text; the various tables were later compiled at Ann Arbor.
