Talking Trash: The Development Of International Legal Governance Over Marine Plastic Pollution, Olivia B. Berryman
Talking Trash: The Development Of International Legal Governance Over Marine Plastic Pollution, Olivia B. Berryman
Global Tides
Increasing amounts of marine plastic pollution entering into the ocean endangers the lives of sea animals, harms the health of human seafood consumers, degrades the marine ecosystem, and contributes to climate change. Despite these consequences, there remains no international legally binding treaty that is solely devoted towards mitigating marine plastic pollution. While there are current treaties in place that have created some regulations to control the entrance of marine plastics into the ocean, none have achieved significant reduction and prevention of the issue due to flaws such as weak enforcement mechanisms and lenient restrictions on ocean dumping. Thus, this research …

Appellate Briefs
Amici 676 law professors submit this brief in support of Plaintiff Jenner & Block’s Motion for Summary Judgment and for Declaratory and Permanent Injunctive Relief (the “Motion”) to emphasize the threat that the President’s Executive Order (the “Order”) presents to the independence and integrity of the legal profession, the rights of clients to seek redress in the courts, and, by extension, the rule of law. As experts in constitutional law, legal ethics, and the history of the legal profession, among other fields, we have a significant interest in ensuring that the principles of free speech, freedom of association, the right …
Securing Biometric Data, Alyssa F. Carroll
Securing Biometric Data, Alyssa F. Carroll
Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase
Biometric data has been widely adopted across various sectors, including digital identity, artificial intelligence (AI), border control, digital wallets, and national identification systems. While biometric identifiers—such as fingerprints, retina scans, and facial recognition—offer reliable and convenient authentication, they also raise significant concerns regarding privacy and security. This paper examines how biometric data is stored, the vulnerabilities it faces, and the most effective methods for safeguarding it. By highlighting the critical importance of biometric data protection, this study reviews current research on approaches, strategies, and policies that enhance security while preserving the functionality and efficiency of biometric systems.

Marvin Owens v. Gary Schuette
On Appeal from the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan Case No. 2:24-cv-10787
From the Summary of the Argument
This appeal requires the Court to correct an error below—derived from a recently abrogated error in this Court’s own precedent—that denies the full remedial protections enacted to safeguard religious exercise under RLUIPA. The only question is whether RLUIPA allows courts to award damages against counties and their officials. The only answer—especially following the Supreme Court’s unanimous interpretation of an identical provision in RFRA—is yes.
New Zealand Security Agencies’ Secrecy, Accountability, And Transparency In The Modern Era, Ben Amata
New Zealand Security Agencies’ Secrecy, Accountability, And Transparency In The Modern Era, Ben Amata
Secrecy and Society
New Zealand’s security agencies need to balance conflicting missions of secrecy, accountability, and transparency in conducting national security government operations. Citizens expect protection without violating their liberties and for security agencies to act effectively and legally. From public revelations about the agencies and government reform efforts, the agencies evolved from almost total secrecy to greater accountability and transparency since World War II. This study employs a historical methodology, which examines primary source documents to reveal the history of secret behavior and to reform the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service and the Government Communications Security Bureau.
Project 2025 And Due Process After Dobbs, Tracy Turner
Project 2025 And Due Process After Dobbs, Tracy Turner
ConLawNOW
Project 2025 supporters have been appointed to prominent federal offices in the second Trump Administration. This includes, most notably, the Office of Management and Budget, for a key strategy of implementing the Project’s goals is manipulation of federal funding. This Essay explores what this might mean for women’s rights and suggests a legal theory with which to challenge Project initiatives. Project 2025 repackages a platform that is fully anti-feminist. It is not a new platform. It is the same set of tools that has been used against feminism since the movement’s inception. It expansively seeks policy changes for abortion, contraception, …

Beyond Data Deletion: Addressing Anticompetitive Conduct In The Era Of Machine Learning, Vaibhav Srikaran
Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts
Like a hamster wheel, the “virtuous cycle” of data collection, collation, and computation spins to create algorithms to assist modern business operations. Companies accumulate data by the terabyte with hopes that their army of data scientists can make sense of all the noise using machine learning. Potential profits encourage companies to seek out data—sometimes unlawfully through collusion. The use of unlawfully collected data in algorithms harms competition. Such data provides a competitive edge that is not accessible to all marketplace participants. Antitrust laws can police unlawful data sharing, but existing remedies are not effective for restoring competition.

Unravelling The Metaverse Matrix: Navigating Privacy Protection Within Modelling And Simulation Platforms, Eugenia Georgiades, James Birt
Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts
This article examines how personal data are regulated in emerging modelling and simulation environments, including computer games, mobile apps, and digital twin platforms. This article centers on a specific type of simulated and modelling environment, namely the metaverse. This article considers the privacy issues that arise when people subscribe to and participate in modelling and simulation platforms where vast amounts of data are collected, disclosed and stored. Such data may be vulnerable to misuse by the platform and third parties. This article considers Meta’s “horizons metaverse” platform as a case study for an immersive modelling and simulation platform. It examines …
