Legal Status Of The Church In Soviet Russia, Vladimir Gsovski Jan 1939

Legal Status Of The Church In Soviet Russia, Vladimir Gsovski

Fordham Law Review

Commonplace is the statement that dictatorships oppose Law and Religion–the two social forces which impede the easy accomplishment of political and spiritual anarchy. Proof, if needed, may be sought for–and found–in the European scene today. In an earlier article,* Vladimir Gsovski reviewed the ambitious, but not too successful, effort of Soviet Russia “to get rid of law as a governing principle.” Relying exclusively upon soviet writings, Mr. Gsovski now traces the legal status of religion in the same country.

The Codes And Code Makers Of Washington, 1889-1937, Arthur S. Beardsley

Articles

Under the provisions of the Organic Act of Washington Territory, Congress had agreed to provide for the publication of the territorial statutes; hence, so long as Congress was willing to assume the cost of the publication of these territorial laws under the guise of a codification of the statutes, but little attention toward the preparation of a compilation, in the form in which this term is generally understood, was likely. The agitation for statutory reform, which consumed no small part of the time of the various territorial legislative sessions, was not motivated by a hope for a code of the …

Criminal Law And Procedure - Physicians And Surgeons - Contraceptive Statutes And Implied Exceptions Thereto, Thomas K. Fisher

Michigan Law Review

A Massachusetts statute made the selling of any drug, medicine or instrument for the prevention of conception a criminal offense. The defendants, a doctor, a nurse, and two social workers, all connected with a charitable association, prescribed and sold contraceptives to non-pregnant, married women. Defendants' offer of proof, admitting the facts charged, but contending that the statute did not apply where the sale was made under a physician's prescription for the preservation of life or health, was found by the trial court to constitute no defense. Held, that the wording was plain and unequivocal allowing for no implied exception. …
