The evolution from an all-white male law school to the current diverse student body and faculty has been slow, deliberate, and often-times painful. This is true even for those who were successful in gaining admission or employment, and even more excruciating to those who were unsuccessful in achieving their goals. Barriers to those individuals who were not white males reflected the Southern society mores of the early years of our history that were super-imposed upon the law school. No one at the law school today would take pride in the fact that it took fourteen years of cajoling and pressuring …

On Local Justice And Culture In Post-Taliban Afghanistan, Thomas J. Barfield
On Local Justice And Culture In Post-Taliban Afghanistan, Thomas J. Barfield
Connecticut Journal of International Law
I'm here to discuss the Afghan justice system, the concept of law, and how people organize themselves, but perhaps from a very different perspective because, as an anthropologist, I worked through this system from the bottom up as opposed to the top down. Most of my experience was in pre-war Afghanistan in the mid1970s. This is now being looked back upon as a Golden Age but when I was there, it was perceived as a corrupt and failing regime run by the king whose departure was a good thing. But 20 years of warfare can change peoples' minds on what …

Rights Inside Out: The Case Of The Women's Human Rights Campaign, Annelise Riles
Rights Inside Out: The Case Of The Women's Human Rights Campaign, Annelise Riles
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
This essay traces the relationship between activists and academics involved in the campaign for “women’s rights as human rights” as a case study of the relationship between different classes of what I call “knowledge professionals” self-consciously acting in a transnational domain. The puzzle that animates this essay is the following: how was it that at the very moment at which a critique of “rights” and a reimagination of rights as “rights talk” proved to be such fertile ground for academic scholarship did the same “rights” prove to be an equally fertile ground for activist networking and lobbying activities? The paper …

Foreword: Interdisciplinarity, Kathleen M. Sullivan
Michigan Law Review
In the beginning, there was law. Then came law-and. Law and society, law and economics, law and history, law and literature, law and philosophy, law and finance, statistics, game theory, psychology, anthropology, linguistics, critical theory, cultural studies, political theory, political science, organizational behavior, to name a few. The variety of extralegal disciplines represented in the books reviewed in this issue attests to this explosion of perspectives on the law in legal scholarship. This development makes clear that the vocation of the legal scholar has shifted from that of priest to theologian. No longer is a law professor successful by virtue …

This book reminds me of the image of the arrogantly condescending and blustering tourist in Cairo who drifts into a store that has taken the trouble of prominently displaying the price of their commodities in nicely typed tags. Nevertheless, the tourist walks in, reads the price tag, and then proclaims, "Okay, what is the real price?" The poor store employee stares at him with incredulity, and simply repeats the price on the tag, and, in response, the tourist emits this knowing and smug smile as if saying, "I know you guys, you never mean what you say; everything in Arab …
