News Or Native Advertising, Hoang Xuan Phuong Aug 2017

News Or Native Advertising, Hoang Xuan Phuong

First Global News Literacy Conference

We are living in a world surrounded by media. Companies are constantly thinking of new ways of communicating and engaging with the public. When the reader is overwhelmed by advertisements in media, they are no longer persuasive to audiences who begin to disbelieve and question what the companies want to promote and sell. The technique of native advertising, which "employs a third party” such as media, social media, celebrities, professionals and people of high stature, has become an important tool that contributes positively to the success of a business. Sponsored articles and television shows are produced in the same way …

Integrated News Literacy Concepts And Skills In Teaching Mobile Journalism, Nguyet Nguyen, Phuong Hoang

First Global News Literacy Conference

Along with the rapid development of technology infrastructure, Vietnam is witnessing a powerful transformation in media activities. One of the significant changes is the advent of a new media form named mobile journalism. Collecting news from various sources is the most difficult task for journalists writing for the emerging mobile platform. Most of the news will be easily found on social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Zalo, etc. On the one hand, journalists can take advantage of the huge volume of information which is multidimensional and has consistent, timely coverage. However, these sources of news, that often lack transparency, clarity, …

Reproducing The Ghanaian/African Subject: Ideological Tensions And Queer Subjectivities In Postcolonial Ghana, Godfried A. Asante Jul 2017

Reproducing The Ghanaian/African Subject: Ideological Tensions And Queer Subjectivities In Postcolonial Ghana, Godfried A. Asante

Communication ETDs

Same-Sex sexual relationship continues to be a criminal offence in Ghana under the carnal knowledge clause instituted by the British during colonization. Although the law does not specifically mention same-sex sexual relations, carnal knowledge criminalizes all forms of non- heterosexual sexual activities. The criminalization of same-sex sexual relations has sparked an intense debate about African subjectivity. On the one hand, many African nationalists and most Christian organizations argue that same-sex sexual relations is unAfrican; this enables them to both subjugate queers while not having to defend their views more explicitly. Others (typically academics) have explored the existence of diverse sexual …

A Saturnalia Of Bunk : Selections From The Free Lance, 1911–1915, H. L. Mencken, S. T. Joshi

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

H. L. Mencken’s reputation as a journalist and cultural critic of the twentieth century has endured well into the twenty-first. His early contributions as a writer, however, are not very well known. He began his journalistic career as early as 1899 and in 1910 cofounded the Baltimore Evening Sun. The next year he initiated a column—The Free Lance—that ran six days a week for four and a half years, until the Sun discontinued it, partially in response to Mencken’s controversial defense of Germany during World War One.

In this early forum for his renowned wit, Mencken broached many of the …

Social Controls Through The Mirror Of Columnists' Narratives: A Content Analysis For Framing In Media, Daphne Canan Jul 2017

Social Controls Through The Mirror Of Columnists' Narratives: A Content Analysis For Framing In Media, Daphne Canan

Institute for the Humanities Theses

Information dissemination is a need for human beings and it is a two way process. This two-way process can be in various formats and forms. One of the oldest ways is the newspaper, which has two types: online and print. While doing this important job, every news and column is influenced by the person who writes and edits it. The influence could be part of human nature; or it could result from an intentional selection of words, facts, and narratives. The latter emerged as an academic facet in social sciences and it is called framing. Framing theory discusses the intentional …

To Tell The Truth: The Credibility Of Cable News Networks In An Era Of Increasingly Partisan Political News Coverage, Christopher Jadick Jun 2017

To Tell The Truth: The Credibility Of Cable News Networks In An Era Of Increasingly Partisan Political News Coverage, Christopher Jadick

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The credibility of the American news media is increasingly under fire. Despite an exponential expansion of information available in the digital media era, increased political news coverage and commentary has brought growing apprehension over how much of today’s news can be trusted and believed. 24-hour cable news channels are among the media most often subject to this criticism. At the same time, the media operates under First Amendment freedom of press protection, a constitutional guarantee granted with the understanding that democracy can only succeed when its citizens are well informed. In the great experiment of our republic, a freely functioning …

The Failure Of News Media Agenda-Setting On Cannabis, Amanda Cranston Jun 2017

The Failure Of News Media Agenda-Setting On Cannabis, Amanda Cranston

Journalism

This study uses the agenda-setting theory (McCombs & Shaw, 1972, p. 176) to examine the various aspects of cannabis coverage in the news media and how news media have presented cannabis and the numerous debates over cannabis uses. Cannabis has been a focus of U.S. news media since the 19th century and has been historically misrepresented in national and local news media. More recently, the U.S. has seen a great shift in the public’s attitude towards cannabis. With more and more states legalizing medical and even recreational use, news media are surging to meet the demands of its publics, even …
