Rediscovering The Constitution, Jack Tsen-Ta Lee Jan 1995

Rediscovering The Constitution, Jack Tsen-Ta Lee

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The fundamental liberties in our Constitution involve a study of tensions: between an individual's rights and the community's interests, between the role of the judiciary on the one hand and the executive and legislature on the other. How we should interpret them depends on where we think equilibrium should be established. This depends on two main factors. The first is the proper function of the judiciary as laid down by our Constitution, which is discussed in Part I of this article. The second is the nature of our fundamental liberties, for they are worded with varying degrees of generality. ... …

Redefining Maroon Heritage In The New World Studies, E. Kofi Agorsah Jan 1995

Redefining Maroon Heritage In The New World Studies, E. Kofi Agorsah

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Evidence from recent archaeological studies appear to suggest a redefinition of the heritage of runaway slave communities, referred to by the name Maroons and other terms. Now properly defined as the pioneer freedom fighters, it is also becoming clear that their heritage is a single constant strand in that of the New World. Contrary to previous views and descriptions which appear to indicate that these communities derived only from African slave escapees, historical and archaeological evidence from the Caribbean, and the Americas now reveal that the heritage of Maroon communities stemmed from the united force forged by between native American …

The Evolution Of Bilingual Education In An American Indian Community : A Decade Of Evaluation As Applied Anthropology, Janet Goldenstein Ahler Aug 1994

The Evolution Of Bilingual Education In An American Indian Community : A Decade Of Evaluation As Applied Anthropology, Janet Goldenstein Ahler

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Applied anthropology has much to offer the educational evaluator role. especially in cross-cultural settings concerning language and bilingual education programs. This study examines the evolution of an elementary school Indian language and bilingual education program in a small. northern plains American Indian reservation community, the use of anthropological research methods. and the role of the external evaluator. Findings suggest that evaluation and change recommendations are more likely to be accepted when they are derived from the participants in the program rather than from an external evaluator.

Defining Religion: Death And Anxiety In An Afro-Brazilian Cult, James M. Donovan Jul 1994

Defining Religion: Death And Anxiety In An Afro-Brazilian Cult, James M. Donovan

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

This dissertation clarifies the anthropological concept of religion by crafting the most useful scientific definition. The first chapter illustrates the confusion surrounding this term, and argues that the comparative method of anthropology requires that this imprecision be removed. Reviewing the four types of definitions of religion extant in the literature -- Content, Behavioral/Performative, Mental, and Functional -- Chapter 1 concludes that the best definition will be a generative functional definition. The second chapter supports this conclusion by finding that an independent discipline, American constitutional law, has arrived at the same understanding.

Chapter 3 details the nature of definitions and the …

Before The Flood: The Golden Volta Basin, E. Kofi Agorsah

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Northern Volta basin has engaged the attention of major research projects in the last ten years with greater Intensity than has been known in the history of research in the area. Explanation of the cultural development as well as connections or relationships between ethnic groups, their geographical distribution and settlement patterning, and the nature and mechanism of functional adaptation in the area are issues that appear to have been the main foci of investigation.

Conclusions based on the data available emphasized the northern Volta Basin as an important area for the development of early cultural traditions in that part …

Review Of The Cree Language Is Our Identity: The La Range Lectures Af Sarah Whitecalf, Rory Larson

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The late Sarah Whitecalf was born on the Moosomin Reserve in Western Saskatchewan in 1919 and grew up there and on the nearby Sweet Grass Reserve. Raised by her mother and grandparents, she was never sent to school and remained a monolingual speaker of Plains Cree throughout her life. Her last twenty years were spent at Saskatoon, where she became a valued informant for scholars and educators attempting to study or revive Cree traditions.

Maximilian, Prince Of Wied (1782-1867): Reconsidered, Paul Schach Jan 1994

Maximilian, Prince Of Wied (1782-1867): Reconsidered, Paul Schach

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

On 3 November 1992 the British Society for the History of Natural Sciences convened at the Naturkundliches Museum in Vienna. Since the theme of the six-day convention was "The Exploration and Opening Up of America as Mirrored by Natural History," it is appropriate that one of the papers presented should have been devoted to Maximilian, Prince of Wied, whose complementary expeditions to North and South America have so greatly enriched our knowledge ofIndian cultures that once flourished in Brazil and on the Great Plains. Yet, despite the fact that Maximilian was "by far the best trained scientific observer to explore …

Review Of The Dog's Children: Anishinaabe Texts Told By Angeline Williams, Paul C. Brooke Jan 1994

Review Of The Dog's Children: Anishinaabe Texts Told By Angeline Williams, Paul C. Brooke

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This book is tremendously valuable as a tool for understanding not only linguistic research but for understanding the life and culture of an Ojibwe woman. Angeline Williams, Biidaasigekwe or "Sunlight Woman," came to Virginia in 1941 from Sugar Island on the St. Mary's River to teach the Ojibwe language to Leonard Bloomfield. Bloomfield's subsequent translations and understanding of the Algonquian language family led to significant advances and changes in the study of linguistics. This series of Ojibwe stories and their up-todate translations to English illustrate the thoroughness of Bloomfield's linguistic research.

Review Of The Upstream People: An Annotated Research Bibliography Of The Omaha Tribe, Mark J. Swetland

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Michael Tate has gathered nearly 1900 documents related to the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska and Iowa, providing the reader of The Upstream People with a valuable research tool. Divided into 32 sections with cultural or historical subject headings, each entry is accompanied by a summary and/or critique. Since each item is provided with only a single index entry, browsing the book does require a bit of creativity. Nonetheless, it is a handy device for anyone interested in Omaha research materials.

Review Of A Dakota-English Dictionary And An English-Dakota Dictionary, Allan R. Taylor Jan 1994

Review Of A Dakota-English Dictionary And An English-Dakota Dictionary, Allan R. Taylor

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

There has been a good deal of interest in the Dakota dialects in recent years, due no doubt to a general increase in interest in American ethnicities since the 1960s. There has been even more interest in the language since the appearance of the film Dances with Wolves.

"Gone Back To Alberta": Robert Kroetsch Rewriting The Great Plains, Francis W. Kaye, Robert Thacker

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Maybe that did it, I thought-maybe that was one of the things that turned me into a writer-my playing [softball] far out in the field. The playing, and the watching that went with it. The listening, out there. The wanting to enter the game while fearing that someone might hit the ball in my direction. The being isolated, out there in the prairie wind and the summer light; my striking up a conversation with a nearby gopher as I watched the pitched ball. . . . The caring so much, so enduringly, for the movements of small creatures, for the …

Metaphor In/And/Of The Four Modernizations: The Discourse Of Pencil Sharpeners In Chinese Politics, William A. Callahan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

"China" is a process of cultural revolutions that have dotted - sometimes with blood - its history. These cultural revolutions have been various attempts to establish a harmony in the Chinese world. Since the Opium Wars of the 1840s, the West has become a major ingredient in this harmony - the Four Modernizations Campaign.

Review Of The Constitutional Future Of The Prairie And Atlantic Regions Of Canada By James N. Mccrorie And Martha L. Macdonald, Howard Cody Feb 1993

Review Of The Constitutional Future Of The Prairie And Atlantic Regions Of Canada By James N. Mccrorie And Martha L. Macdonald, Howard Cody

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The Canadian Plains Research Center has published eighteen papers which were presented at the November 1991 conference. The conference sought to identify common interests and strategies for two of Canada's peripheral regions and their seven provinces in the country's ongoing constitutional reform process. These provinces, the Atlantic region of Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick, and the prairie provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, share a long history of grievances over perceived domination of national policymaking by the populous central provinces of Ontario and Quebec.

Most of the book's essays are supplied by academics who write about …

Exploring The Explorers: Great Plains Peoples And The Lewis And Clark Expedition, James P. Ronda Jan 1993

Exploring The Explorers: Great Plains Peoples And The Lewis And Clark Expedition, James P. Ronda

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

There are few stories that seem more commonplace than the narrative of the exploration of the American West. It is the stock-in-trade of countless textbooks, classroom lectures, and popular novels. In the traditional telling, European and American adventurers are the actors at center stage while Native Americans stand silently in the wings or have bit parts.

The Drama Of Law In Nebraska State Capitol: Scupture And Inscription, Robert S. Haller Jan 1993

The Drama Of Law In Nebraska State Capitol: Scupture And Inscription, Robert S. Haller

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Drama is the quality that Hartley Burr Alexander, the "thematic consultant" for the Nebraska State Capitol, admired in the sculpture of his time. In his role as consultant, Alexander fused the ideas of the building's architect, Bertram Goodhue, and its sculptor, Lee Lawrie, into a sustained programmatic interpretation of society and law. This paper discusses the significance and the development of the twenty-one Lawrie sculptural panels around the cornices of the Capitol that illustrate the "Development of Law."

Archaeological Considerations On Social Dynamics And Spatial Pattern Development Of Traditional Settlements, E. Kofi Agorsah Jan 1993

Archaeological Considerations On Social Dynamics And Spatial Pattern Development Of Traditional Settlements, E. Kofi Agorsah

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

One fascinating aspect of archaeological analysis is the explanation of the frequency with which material manifestations of man's behaviour are bonded together. The complexity of the interconnections and associations makes it even more challenging and exciting. Areal variations of the relationships between cultural phenomena are so numerous that archaeologists have, over the centuries, looked for regularities or patterning among distributions of these material manifestations. It is not the patterns that are recognised nor the fact that their distribution varies from place to place that is of greatest interest. Rather it is the past behaviour of the society concerned that is …
