Withholding Payment On Otoe-Missouria Reservation Lands, Daniel W. Overton
Withholding Payment On Otoe-Missouria Reservation Lands, Daniel W. Overton
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
In 1883 the U.S. General Land Office conducted the sale of the eastern remnant of the Big Blue reservation in Nebraska and Kansas for the benefit of its owners, the Otoe-Missouria Indians. The property sold for an average of $12.22 an acre. It was the highest per-acre price ever offered for Indian lands on the Central and Northern Great Plains. Before the first year of white settlement had come to an end, however, many landholders began to petition federal authorities for payment-time extensions and, eventually, debt reductions. They argued that they had been "forced" to pay more for their lands …
Port Visits As A Component Of Soviet Naval Diplomacy In The Mediterranean Sea 1967-1986, John Mark Ickes
Port Visits As A Component Of Soviet Naval Diplomacy In The Mediterranean Sea 1967-1986, John Mark Ickes
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
The Soviet Union used its navy as an instrument to support its political agenda, particularly after 1967. This thesis examines 1785 Soviet port visits in the Mediterranean Sea to identify characteristics of the Soviet naval port visit program, particularly the significance of the country visited, the length of the visit, and the ships selected for the visit. The results indicate that certain Mediterranean countries were visited more than others, that the length of the visit can be associated with various Soviet political intentions, and that certain warships made significantly more visits than others.
Russophobia And Judophobia Backlash In Extremist Russian Nationalism, 1987-1990, Connie Moray
Russophobia And Judophobia Backlash In Extremist Russian Nationalism, 1987-1990, Connie Moray
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
In the late 1980s the former Soviet Union witnessed an increase in Russian nationalist extremist activity. Russian nationalist extremism was a backlash against a perceived decline in Russian status and a re-evaluation of such basic concepts as what it means to be Russian. Two manifestations of this backlash were russophobia and judophobia.
This thesis employs concepts used by American sociologists Seymour Martin Lipset and Earl Raab in their study of right-wing extremist groups in the United States to gain new insight into the nature of Russian nationalist extremism. Primary sources used include the writings of important Russian nationalists including Igor …
Review Of "The Government And Politics Of The Alberta Metis Settlements” By T. C. Pocklington, K. P. Binda
Review Of "The Government And Politics Of The Alberta Metis Settlements” By T. C. Pocklington, K. P. Binda
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
With the emergence of native issues such as land claims and self-government in the Canadian constitutional debate, Pocklington's non-technical, informative, and exploratory book as emerged at a timely moment.
A void of scholarship about the Metis has been observed by historians such as Frideres and Friesen. Pocklington has attempted to fill that void, but acknowledges the complexity of his study since the "government and politics ... as they function in small communities like the settlements is intimidating [as] it is difficult to identify the various players, much less to discover how they interact" (p. xiii).
Review Of "The Scarab Beetles Of Nebraska" By Brett C. Ratcliffe, William B. Warner
Review Of "The Scarab Beetles Of Nebraska" By Brett C. Ratcliffe, William B. Warner
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Of the few regional faunal surveys of Scarabaeidae available, The Scarab Beetles of Nebraska provides by far the most comprehensive treatise to date of any area in the Western Hemisphere. It not only serves as a manual for identification of all adult Nebraskan Scarabaeidae, but also includes available information on larvae and natural history for each species as well. The book is lavishly illustrated with adult habitus drawings of most species, supplemented by line drawings of larval and adult key characters. Illustrator Mark Marcuson's color plates are worthy of framing, and congratulations go to the printers for their reproduction of …

Hydrology And Texas Water Law: ...A Logician’S Nightmare, Otis W. Templer
Hydrology And Texas Water Law: ...A Logician’S Nightmare, Otis W. Templer
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Scientists generally consider all water as merely passing through, but in different phases of, the endless hydrologic cycle. In contrast, the law divides water in the hydrologic cycle into several different classes based on real or supposed physical differences between classes. Legal classes of water are treated separately, usually without consideration of the many interconnections existing between phases of the cycle, and different rules of law have developed concerning the ownership and use of each legal class. Texas courts, like those of other Great Plains jurisdictions, have applied this fragmented classification system, recognizing diverse public and private rights to each …

An Uninviting Wilderness: The Plains Of West Texas, 153+1821, Félix D. Álmaraz, Jr.
An Uninviting Wilderness: The Plains Of West Texas, 153+1821, Félix D. Álmaraz, Jr.
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Throughout the entire colonial period of Texas, except for brief periods of gallant exploration and practical reconnaissance, Spanish pioneers carefully avoided the Plains of West Texas as a potential area of permanent settlement. Essentially because of the absence of dependable water resources, an all-important consideration prescribed in the Recopilacion de las Leyes de las Indias for the selection of occupation sites, Hispanics generally regarded the West Texas Plains with respectful awe and fearful apprehension. Spanish law prohibited settlers, notwithstanding personal initiative and the availability of land in great abundance, from occupying a region that lacked reliable sources of fresh water. …
Saskatchewan Bound: Migration To A New Canadian Frontier, Randy William Widds
Saskatchewan Bound: Migration To A New Canadian Frontier, Randy William Widds
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Almost forty years ago, Roland Berthoff used the published census to construct a map of English Canadian settlement in the United States for the year 1900 (Map 1).1 Migration among this group was generally short distance in nature, yet a closer examination of Berthoff's map reveals that considerable numbers of migrants gravitated toward more distant agricultural and urban frontiers and a reading of the historical literature on internal migration within North America emphasizes the fact that a significant number of Canadians living in the United States returned home to Canada during the period 1896-1914.2
Review Of Cowboys Of The Americas, John Donahue
Review Of Cowboys Of The Americas, John Donahue
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Some twenty years ago, while preparing a course on the frontier in literature, I first began to research the horsemen of the Americas. At that time, there were available only the numerous classic studies of the American cowboy, those by Dobie, Hough, Folsom, Abbott, Adams, Branch, Frantz and Choate, Santee, to name a few, but on the charro (vaquero), the llanero, the gaucho, or the huaso (guaso), very little was to be found. The few books, articles, extracts from travel logs that existed offered casual observations of these horsemen rather than a focused, coherent study. Only Edward Larocque Tinker's seminal …
The Legal Culture Of The Great Plains, Kermit L. Hall
The Legal Culture Of The Great Plains, Kermit L. Hall
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The great prairie lawyer Abraham Lincoln once said of an opposing legal counsel's argument, "He caught on to something, but only by the hind leg."l Lincoln's observation applies with equal force to our current understanding of the legal culture of the Great Plains, and even that characterization is generous. Take, for example, the literature on the region's history of public and private law and legal institutions. It is pitifully small. Bits and pieces are scattered through specialized journals and state history periodicals, but there is nothing like a systematic body of scholarship. 2
When East Meets West: The Passions Of Landscape And Culture In Gretel Ehrlich's Heart Mountain, Gregory L. Morris
When East Meets West: The Passions Of Landscape And Culture In Gretel Ehrlich's Heart Mountain, Gregory L. Morris
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Gretel Ehrlich is a writer who has taken for the subject of her art-and who has taken for her home-the Big Hom Basin of northern Wyoming. That particular extension of plains landscape, stretched between the Big Horn Mountains to the east (a sort of geological intrusion upon an otherwise Great Plains terrain) and the Absarokas to the west, has provided both an intensely personal and a brilliantly imaginative source of inspiration for Ehrlich's fiction and non-fiction. What on one hand has been a distinctly restorative (and even erotic) landscape for Ehrlich also has proven to be a potently politicized landscape.

Review Of The Cowgirls, Karen Morin
Review Of The Cowgirls, Karen Morin
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
If this book suffers from anything it's too much enthusiasm for its subject. Joyce Roach sets out to prove that the cowgirl is our "foremost genuine American heroine," and while this is at least arguable, she tends to overstate her case at the expense of the early suffragists (cowgirls, not they, were the "advance guard of the feminist movement") and in particular at the expense of other western women: "Other frontier women were more or less forgotten with the passing of the frontier. The life of the farm woman, for instance, was never heroic, just miserable . . . and …
The Sacred And The Secular: Exploring Contemporary Meanings And Values For Religious Buildings In Singapore, Lily Kong
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The study of human environmental experiences has engaged a range of disciplinary attention, with work deriving chiefly from environmental psychologists and geographers. However, most research has focused on the sensory aspects of environmental experience, while the intangible, immeasurable experiences of environments have been somewhat neglected. Certainly, the meanings and values that are invested in places, which form part of the interaction between humans and environments, have not been sufficiently researched. My intention in this paper is to address one aspect of this silence, namely the ways in which humans experience their religious environments, and more particularly, the symbolic meanings and …
Japan Looks At An Uncertain China: The Role Of Japan's Aid To China, Yixin Yang
Japan Looks At An Uncertain China: The Role Of Japan's Aid To China, Yixin Yang
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
This thesis discusses the role the Japanese aid has played in accommodating the structural change of Sino-Japanese economic relations and in dealing with the economic and political crisis that has jeopardized their bilateral relations and Japan's own national interest. Japan's early resumption of economic aid to China after Tiananmen reflects how aid philosophy differs from that of most of the other Western aid donors. The conclusions are that Japan's large loan to China has played a vital role in maintaining and strengthening Sino-Japanese economic relations, that the aid has made the interdependent relations between the two countries an asymmetric one, …

Great Plains-Rocky Mountain Division, Association Of American Geographers, 1991 Meeting, Richard A. Marston
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The 46th annual meeting of the Great Plains-Rocky Mountain Division, Association of American Geographers, drew a record attendance of 270 to Laramie, Wyoming, on September 5–7, 1991. The Department of Geography at the University of Wyoming hosted participants from Alberta, Colorado, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Saskatchewan, and South Dakota as well as from many other locations outside the Plains region.

Review Of Sustainable Agriculture In Temperate Zones, Charles A. Francis, Cornelia Butler Flora, And Larry D. King, Eds., David R. Lighthall
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The editors of Sustainable Agriculture in Temperate Zones have succeeded in compiling the diverse range of issues orbiting the expansive and somewhat nebulous concept of sustainable agriculture. The book contains well-written chapters by established experts drawn primarily from the mainstream sustainable agriculture movement within US land grant universities. The strength of the book is the authors' cogent reviews of leading edge research in their respective fields of expertise. These areas include soil chemistry and biology, plant breeding, crop rotations and legumes, pest management, pasture management, conversion to sustainable systems, production economics, rural development, and agricultural policy. Added to this eclectic …
Groundwater Levels in Nebraska, 1989, continues the excellent record of Nebraska Water Survey Papers produced by the Conservation and Survey Division and the US Geological Survey. The authors provide full color cartographic displays that are accurate as well as highly readable. Some of the maps treat the state of Nebraska for summary purposes. However, the greater value is found in the nine subregional large scale maps that cover the entire state in detail. Each map clearly displays the areas of significant water-level change that has occurred from the period of first reliable record through 1989. For Nebraskans, it should be …
Review Of The Medicine Men: Oglala Sioux Ceremony And Healing, By Thomas H. Lewis, Elizabeth S. Grobsmith
Review Of The Medicine Men: Oglala Sioux Ceremony And Healing, By Thomas H. Lewis, Elizabeth S. Grobsmith
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Lewis' new book on Oglala ceremony and healing brings together observations and interpretations of his encounters with Lakota healers from the Pine Ridge Reservation during his stay there in the 1960s and 1970s. Lewis was readily incorporated into the community and entrusted with details of conceptions and sources of power which reflect both the relaxed political and social climate and the attitude of openness the Lakota then held about sharing knowledge of their traditions with outsiders. This is fortunate, both for Lewis and the reader, for much of the substance of what Lewis learned is fast disappearing as are the …
Review Of The Political Economy Of Manitoba, Edited By Jim Silver And Jeremy Hull, Ralph F. Harris
Review Of The Political Economy Of Manitoba, Edited By Jim Silver And Jeremy Hull, Ralph F. Harris
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The Political Economy of Manitoba analyses the evolution of social, economic, and political marginalization concomitant with a wide range of struggle and conflict experienced by the people of the province. Its chapters provide significant empirical evidence of the nature and scope of this evolution. Underlying objectives of the contributions to this book are the support of activists in their popular struggles and the stimulation of progressive innovations in political policy. Two main perspectives are used in presentation. Historical analysis is used to show the origins and progression of growth. Analysis of more recent developments portrays the changing social and economic …
Economic Development Programs In The Great Plains: The Example Of Nebraska, Michael Broadway
Economic Development Programs In The Great Plains: The Example Of Nebraska, Michael Broadway
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
In an effort to stem Nebraska's loss of population and create new employment opportunities, the State Legislature passed the Nebraska Employment and Investment Growth Act in 1987. The legislation provides various tax incentives to businesses that make new investments in the state or create "new jobs," the majority of which are located in metropolitan counties. However, the largest nuntber of jobs to result from this legislation is at IBP's beef-packing plant in Lexington. Previous studies of the impact of beef-packing plants upon small towns found high levels of social disruption associated with the arrival of the workers. Lexington, by contrast, …

Review Of The Middle West: Its Meaning In American Culture, By James R. Shortridge, John Fraser Hart
Review Of The Middle West: Its Meaning In American Culture, By James R. Shortridge, John Fraser Hart
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
James R. Shortridge has cheerfully pursued the will-o'-the-wisp of trying to describe the "idea" of the Middle West in a book that was given the prestigious John Brinckerhoff Jackson Prize of the Association of American Geographers in 1990. He argues that a careful reading of the kinds of popular publications that are indexed in the Renders' Guide to Periodical Literantre can reveal the personality and image of the region, what it originally meant to Americans, and how this meaning has changed. over time. Attempts to find meaning in places and things currently seem to be fashionable. Such efforts can be …
Technology Exports From A Small, Very Open Nic: The Case Of Singapore, Eng Fong Pang, Hal Hill
Technology Exports From A Small, Very Open Nic: The Case Of Singapore, Eng Fong Pang, Hal Hill
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This paper examines the nature, composition and determinants of Singapore's early stage technology exports. The pattern of these exports reflects the quite unique mix of policy and institutional features in Singapore's environment - remarkably high growth, very open economy, rapid structural change, particularly intense economic relations with neighboring Southeast Asian nations, and a pervasive and paternalistic state role. The bases of Singapore's comparative advantage in these service exports are identified, and some general implications from its experience are analyzed.
The Origins Of The Department Of Defense Recommendation To Cross The 38th Parallel During The Korean War, Wayne A. Kirkbride
The Origins Of The Department Of Defense Recommendation To Cross The 38th Parallel During The Korean War, Wayne A. Kirkbride
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
This thesis considers the reasons the Department of Defense (DOD) developed its recommendation concerning the U.S. involvement in the Korean War. The United states initially committed its forces to restore the status quo antebellum. However, by 31 July 1950, the DOD recommended that a free, unified, and representative Korea should be the policy object of the war and that the occupation of all of Korea and the defeat of the North Korean armed forces north and south of the 38th Parallel should be the military objectives.
Several factors contributed to the recommendation of a change in policy and strategy. A …
In The Shadow Of Oriental Culture: A Study Of The Impact Of Confucianism On Japan's Economic Development After World War Ii, Xuedong Xu
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
Japan's fast economic growth after World War II can be ascribed to different factors. This study seeks to determine whether the cultural factor, more specifically Confucianism in Japanese version, has constituted the dynamism behind the success stories of Japan. The study approaches the problem by examining the Confucian doctrine and original works of important Japanese philosophers concerning the Confucian ethics and values, which are recrystallized into new organizational patterns in industrial corporation. While the period after World War II is the focus of the study, the unique features of Japanese industry like "Life-time Employment" and "Groupism" are reviewed to determine …
