Urban Constraints, Political Imperatives: Environmental 'Design' In Singapore, Victor R. Savage, Lily Kong
Urban Constraints, Political Imperatives: Environmental 'Design' In Singapore, Victor R. Savage, Lily Kong
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
What lies at the heart of the continuing efforts at social education and engineering? We argue that they stem from a political elite which recognises the constraints facing Singapore and the need to deal with them at national level. Specifically, the government in Singapore has recognised the spatial constraints of an island-state and the dangers of a burgeoning population, particularly in relation to the need to sustain a viable urban ecosystem. They have therefore been conscientious in planning and population control. They have also stressed the importance of remaining economically viable in order to survive and an entire survival and …

The main objectives of the study of maroon communities are: to obtain archaeological data that can be used for the interpretation of the socio-cultural patterns of the behavior of the Maroons; to determine the factors that contribute to the location and character of Maroon settlements; and to obtain material for dating and providing a chronological framework for the origins and development of maroon heritage in Jamaica The overall objective is to identify the character and mechanism of the functional adaptation of Maroon societies in Jamaica over time.

The Impractical Ideal Costa Rica, The United States And Central America Reunification, 1902-1932, Donald R. Lam
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examines the motivations of Central American Unionists and the failure of their movement in the early years of the twentieth century. The existing literature attributes the failure of Central American unification during this era to U.S. policies meant to maintain a divided isthmus in order to economically and politically exploit the region. A closer analysis of the primary sources, however, reveals that union failed because of internal factors, and that Washington's actions generally favored efforts to rejoin the nations to reduce isthmian tensions. Attempts to reunite the republics failed because of regional and domestic political rivalries, weaknesses in …

The Nebraska Chapter of The Wildlife Society (NCTWS) held its 1992 Annual Meeting and Technical Sessions on September 30 - October 2, 1992 at the 4-H Camp near Halsey, Nebraska. The goal was to provide a forum for professionals involved with wildlife in Nebraska to discuss new advances and recent ideas in management programs, public education, research, and technology.
This year's introductory session focused on Conservation Biology. NCTWS President Jon D. Kauffeld introduced keynote speaker Richard L. Knight of Colorado State University, who delivered an address entitled "What's So New About Conservation Biology?" The threat of losing biological diversity …
Review Of Thomas Moran And The Surveying Of The American West By Joni Louise Kinsey, Martha Kennedy
Review Of Thomas Moran And The Surveying Of The American West By Joni Louise Kinsey, Martha Kennedy
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Along with Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902) and a few others, Thomas Moran (1837-1926) created some of the most memorable and influential paintings of the American West in the late nineteenth century. Joni Louise Kinsey presents the first thorough study of Moran's early pivotal paintings, the products of his experiences with the great survey expeditions of the 1870s into the west.
Review Of A Social Geography Of Canada: Essays In Honour Of J. Wreford Watson By Guy M. Robinson, Randy Widdis
Review Of A Social Geography Of Canada: Essays In Honour Of J. Wreford Watson By Guy M. Robinson, Randy Widdis
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
As a graduate student at McMaster and Queen's, I was made very aware of the contribution of J. Wreford Watson to Canadian geography. This is understandable since he was largely responsible for the establishment of geography departments at both these institutions as well as at Carleton. This collection of essays by former graduate students, friends, and colleagues on both sides of the Atlantic cover many of the themes of inquiry that interested Watson. The contents focus upon the changing character of Canadian landscapes and society, including dimensions of its historical development, its present spatial forms and current social issues. The …
The Iconography Of Plants Collected On The Lewis And Clark Expedition, Linda Rossi, Alfred E. Schuyler
The Iconography Of Plants Collected On The Lewis And Clark Expedition, Linda Rossi, Alfred E. Schuyler
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
FrederickPursh 's Flora Americae Septentrionalis (1814) is considered to be the standard flora of the nineteenth century. Additional floras of this period were developed by Nuttall, Elliott, and Torrey and Gray. We know that Meriwether Lewis collected some herbarium specimens that contributed to Pursh's Flora during the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804-1806. Pursh's Flora was the first to include plants of the Pacific Northwest. A number of the specimens Lewis collected are in the Herbarium of the Academy of Natural Sciences. Those who use the Herbarium know and appreciate the contribution of Lewis to botany. Twenty-four of the illustration …
Review Of Useful Pleasures: The Shaping Of Leisure In Alberta, 1896-1945 By Donald G. Wetherell And Irene Kmet, David Weaver
Review Of Useful Pleasures: The Shaping Of Leisure In Alberta, 1896-1945 By Donald G. Wetherell And Irene Kmet, David Weaver
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Modestly touted as a preliminary exploration of leisure themes and topics in Alberta during the first half of the twentieth century, this book at first glance might be rejected as too esoteric by potential readers who are neither leisure specialists nor Albertans. This would be unfortunate, since the authors have produced a most informative and relevant work with implications reaching far beyond its intended geographical and topical scope. The first three chapters constituting Part One examine the institutional, social, and technological context within which leisure in early Alberta developed, while the last eight chapters (Part Two) focus upon a comprehensive …
Ideological Hegemony And The Political Symbolism Of Religious Buildings In Singapore, Lily Kong
Ideological Hegemony And The Political Symbolism Of Religious Buildings In Singapore, Lily Kong
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Cultural geographers have for too long ignored the association between the 'religious' and the 'political', concentrating instead on separating the 'religious' from the sociopolitical and economic forces in society. The challenge is taken up in this paper in an analysis of the contemporary meanings and values of religious buildings in Singapore as invested by the state. Attention is paid to the state's conceptions of religion and religious space and the roles it plays in influencing such space. The ways in which, through its various roles, the state in Singapore plays a significant part in influencing context and hence in shaping …

Review Of Groundwater Exploitation In The High Plains And Henry A. Wallace's Irrigation Frontier: On The Trail Of The Corn Belt Farmer, 1909, Sam Kepfield
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
David Kromm and Stephen White, both professors of geography at Kansas State University and experts on water use in the West, have gathered pieces by water experts. The result, Groundwater Exploitation in the High Plains, is a first-rate exploration of the methods and problems of groundwater utilization in the Ogallala Aquifer and the states overlying it-Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico.
New World Encounters: Exploring The Great Plains Of North America, John L. Allen
New World Encounters: Exploring The Great Plains Of North America, John L. Allen
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Arising partly from the debates, scholarly and otherwise, surrounding the commemoration of the Columbian Quincentennial, the claim has been made that the European discovery and exploration of the New World was a process that had "meaning only in terms of European ignorance, not in terms of any contribution to universal knowledge"1 and that the study of exploration and discovery is therefore ethnocentric or (worse) racist. Such a claim, which denies the mechanisms of exploration and discovery their important place in the broader epistemological process of how we know and understand the world, is contentious.
Review Of Encyclopedia Of Frontier Biography. 3 Vols, David J. Wishart
Review Of Encyclopedia Of Frontier Biography. 3 Vols, David J. Wishart
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
There are almost 4500 entries in this Encyclopedia of Frontier Biography. Candidates were chosen by the editor for the "significance of their deeds" and for the intrinsic "interest" of their role in the frontier process (vii). They are mostly men, mainly Euro-American but also Native American, though clearly some effort has been made to include frontier women. Among them are explorers, scientists, outlaws, missionaries, settlers, and soldiers. T wentiethcentury frontier historians like Athearn and Billington are also included, as long as they, like all the other featured people, are deceased. Strangely, prospectors are excluded on the implausible grounds that …

Review Of A Country So Interesting: The Hudson's Bay Company And Two Centuries Of Mapping, 1670- 1870., Paul Hackett
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
In recent years scholars have sought out the records of the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) as excellent primary sources for Canadian historical research. The vast majority of this attention has been focused on the company's immense body of written documents, the product of its fur trading activities. In addition to its role in the fur trade, however, the HBC also made a critical contribution to the exploration and mapping of much of Canada prior to 1870 and has left an impressive cartographic legacy. Until now the full value of this aspect of the HBC's activities has been largely overlooked. With …

Review Of The Dispossession Of The American Indian, 1887- 1934., Thomas E. Ross
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Understanding the significance of the General Allotment Act of 1887 (Dawes Act) is central to any rational analysis of the present condition of the American Indian population. McDonnell has, in The Dispossession of the American Indian, 1887-1934, given us an excellent primer on the reasoning for the establishment of the Dawes Act and how it has affected the lives of the peoples it was designed to help. Although more than 20 percent of this little book is devoted to notes and bibliography, it is a valuable contribution to American Indian literature and a timely addition to the quincentenary debate.

Review Of Roadside History Of Oklahoma, Brad Bays

Review Of Pawnee Passage, 1870-1875, Oliver Frohling
Review Of Pawnee Passage, 1870-1875, Oliver Frohling
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
In 1875 the Pawnees were removed from the remains of their vast lands in Nebraska to a new reservation iI). Indian territory. Relying on historical sources as well as oral history accounts of Pawnee life, Blaine documents the mounting pressures on the tribe in the years between 1870 to 1875 that finally led to their expulsion from Nebraska. She carefully describes the change in the Pawnee way of life that resulted from government policies and pressures by surrounding settlers.
Negotiating Conceptions Of 'Sacred Space': A Case Study Of Religious Buildings In Singapore, Lily Kong
Negotiating Conceptions Of 'Sacred Space': A Case Study Of Religious Buildings In Singapore, Lily Kong
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
In this paper, I approach the study of religious place from a re-theorized cultural geographical stance. Using multi-religious Singapore as a case study, I examine the tensions which arise over the meanings and values associated with religious buildings because of the conflict between state hegemony on the one hand and the oppositional meanings and values of religious groups and individuals on the other. I also examine the ways in which individuals negotiate their conceptions of sacred space in order to cope with changes imposed on their religious places by the state. Primarily, my argument is that conflict is avoided because …
Archaeological Considerations On Social Dynamics And Spatial Pattern Development Of Traditional Settlements, E. Kofi Agorsah
Archaeological Considerations On Social Dynamics And Spatial Pattern Development Of Traditional Settlements, E. Kofi Agorsah
Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
One fascinating aspect of archaeological analysis is the explanation of the frequency with which material manifestations of man's behaviour are bonded together. The complexity of the interconnections and associations makes it even more challenging and exciting. Areal variations of the relationships between cultural phenomena are so numerous that archaeologists have, over the centuries, looked for regularities or patterning among distributions of these material manifestations. It is not the patterns that are recognised nor the fact that their distribution varies from place to place that is of greatest interest. Rather it is the past behaviour of the society concerned that is …
Native Americans, The Courts And Water Policy: Is Nothing Sacred?, Peter J. Longo, Chrisitana E. Miewald
Native Americans, The Courts And Water Policy: Is Nothing Sacred?, Peter J. Longo, Chrisitana E. Miewald
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Public policy in such areas as the environment is increasingly being shaped by the courts as they resolve conflicts. There is some question whether the courts are able to include in policy decisions those values that are not derived from economic utility. In this article, the values represented by traditional Native American beliefs about nature and particularly water are examined. While Native Americans have won some court battles over water, the judges have usually decided on the basis of contractual and treaty agreements and not on the basis of the preservation of traditional values. Cases arising in the Great Plains …

Review Of An Ecological History Of Agriculture, 10,000 B.C.- A.D. 10,000 By Daniel E. Vasey, Donald M. Edwards
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Population, environment, and energy are used as three significant determinants of agricultural systems. An Ecological History of Agriculture covers the span of time from the first known managed agriculture to an uncertain future. In a systematic manner, the author moves through chapters from the origins of agriculture to the future, covering topics along the span of time of the origins of agriculture, preindustrial agriculture, pastoralism, industrial agriculture, the present state of agriculture, and the future for agriculture. Interwoven is a global coverage of the influence of population, environment, and energy on agricultural systems as impacting ecosystems of the tropics, dry …

A Daring Proposal For Dealing With An Inevitable Disaster? A Review Of The Buffalo Commons Proposal, Karen De Bres, Mark Guizlo
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
In December 1987, "The Great Plains: From Dust to Dust, a Daring Proposal for Dealing With an Inevitable Disaster," by Frank and Deborah Popper appeared in Planning, a journal of the American Planning Association. While many alternatives have been suggested to solve the environmental, social, and economic problems of the region, the Poppers' Buffalo Commons thesis quickly made regional and national headlines. Since 1987, the Poppers, while writing and speaking on this topic at length, have failed to substantiate many of their arguments. Meanwhile, their somewhat facile assumptions have attracted a wide and sometimes favorable audience. This paper contains three …
The Popper Proposals For The Great Plains: A View From The Canadian Prairies, Alec H. Paul
The Popper Proposals For The Great Plains: A View From The Canadian Prairies, Alec H. Paul
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The Popper thesis, that large parts of the U.S. Great Plains are best suited to their pre-settlement role of "buffalo commons" and should be returned to that state, might also be applied to portions of the Canadian prairies north of the 49th parallel. The Canadian Dry Belt, often referred to as the Palliser Triangle, has suffered drought and environmental degradation similar to the U. S. Great Plains. Rural depopulation began in the 1920s, and in the 1930s the region became known as the Canadian Dustbowl. As early as the 1920s, some farmers had begun to work together to develop land-use …

Review Of Aquatic Invertebrates Of Alberta By Hugh F. Clifford, Paul B. Kannowski
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Alberta is a province with diverse geography, climate, and ecology. Encompassing level prairies, gently sloping hills, and the high mountains of the eastern slope of the Rockies, it provides outstanding scenery as well as productive farming and extensive mineral production. Its variable climate provides short, hot summers and long, cold winters. A relatively high level of rainfall (and snowfall) provides an abundance of running and standing water habitats, including four major rivers (Milk, Saskatchewan, Athabasca, and Peace), two large lakes (Athabasca and Lesser Slave), and many smaller lakes and prairie potholes. This physical diversity has provided environmental features that enable …
