Review Of Gennans In The New World: Essays In The History Of Immigration, Jorg Nagler
Review Of Gennans In The New World: Essays In The History Of Immigration, Jorg Nagler
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
This book is a collection of nine essays Frederick C. Luebke published between 1965 and 1985 and one essay specifically written for this volume dealing with German-American historiography of the last decades. The essays-including revisions and addenda-reflect Luebke's impressive contribution to the social, political, and cultural history of German Americans and provide an overview of the substantial German immigration to the United States. The essays also delineate Luebke's changing focus from the Great Plains and Midwest of the nineteenth century to an enlarged nationwide perspective of Germans in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. To go even beyond this agenda, Luebke …
Review Of Pipe, Bible, And Peyote Among The Oglala Sioux: A Study In Religious Identity, Elizabeth S. Grobsmith
Review Of Pipe, Bible, And Peyote Among The Oglala Sioux: A Study In Religious Identity, Elizabeth S. Grobsmith
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Pipe, Bible, and Peyote among the Oglala Sioux is a republication of a 1980 manuscript published in the Stockholm Studies in Comparative Religion. Steinmetz, a Jesuit priest, spent twenty years (1961-1981) on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, where he served as clergyman and participated, observed, and reflected on the unique constellation of modem Lakota religion. Steinmetz outlines the complexity of different religious identities among the Sioux, to include: the traditional "pure" non-acculturative beliefs and its practitioners, reflected in the American Indian Movement's political emphasis on a return to indigenous practices; "Ecumenist I," designating Lakota Christians who practice both …
The "Poison Porridge" Case: Chinese And The Administration Of Justice In Early Saskatchewan, Ken Leyton Brown
The "Poison Porridge" Case: Chinese And The Administration Of Justice In Early Saskatchewan, Ken Leyton Brown
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
On the morning of 8 August 1907 a number of patrons were taking breakfast in the Capital Restaurant on Lome Street in Regina. The restaurant had not been in operation long but was apparently doing a good business, so it must have been somewhat disturbing to Mr. Steele, the owner and manager, when shortly after beginning their morning meal a number of his patrons became ill. The symptoms included quite severe abdominal pains so the decision was taken to send for a doctor who arrived to find nine people suffering from what was obviously something rather more serious than indigestion. …
Review Of The Trial Of Leanard Peltier., John Krejci
Review Of The Trial Of Leanard Peltier., John Krejci
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
On 26 June 1975 in a firefight on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation between the FBI and AIM, two FBI agents were killed. AIM member Leonard Peltier and three other Indians were arrested. Only Peltier was convicted. The Trial of Leanard Peltier carefully documents the trial in its social and historical context.

Having Babies Or Not: Household Composition And Fertility In Rural Iowa And Nebraska, 1900,1910, Deborah Fink, Alicia Carriquiry
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
How did life change for people from the eastern prairie or forest regions when they crossed the Missouri River to settle in the Plains of Nebraska? The land presented its own social, economic, and environmental problems for the settlers. While some historians have emphasized the resourcefulness with which settlers adapted to maintain the life ways of the rural regions to the east, others have pointed to the cultural and social shifts effected by the plains environment. Considerable social divergence occurred within the plains population, even within the dominant northern European American ethnicity. This study addresses the lives of rural women …
Review Of The Struggle For The Land: Indigenous Insight And Industrial Empire In The Semiarid World, Sarah Carter
Review Of The Struggle For The Land: Indigenous Insight And Industrial Empire In The Semiarid World, Sarah Carter
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The essays in this innovative and significant book look at the effects of European occupation on the people and the environment of semiarid regions on several continents. It is the book's comparative and interdisciplinary approach that makes it particularly original and provocative. Included are the lands of the indigenous people of the North American Plains, the Australian Aborigines, the Kazakhs of what was once the USSR, the Maasai of Kenya, several groups in South Africa, Alaskan, and Lapp (Saami) people. Contributors are from anthropology, economics, English, law, history, religion, Native American studies, and environmental studies and they are John W. …
Review Of The Enduring Indians Of Kansas: A Century And A Half Of Acculturation, James A. Clifton
Review Of The Enduring Indians Of Kansas: A Century And A Half Of Acculturation, James A. Clifton
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
In a region as well mapped and paved as Kansas Indian studies, anyone promising better roads to improved understanding faces large obstacles. The author pledges himself to a "true picture" of certain Kansas Indians as "multidimensional human beings," one that shows how they "strategically utilized their syncretic cultures in order to survive in a hostile Kansas." If not obvious, the latter statement is conceptual garbage, while the story he tells is everything but multidimensional. On the contrary, what this author does is to impose on the historical record his own version of the currently popular, orthodox Indian Story: his "enduring …
Review Of The Medicine Men: Oglala Sioux Ceremony And Healing., Beatrice Medicine
Review Of The Medicine Men: Oglala Sioux Ceremony And Healing., Beatrice Medicine
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
As a Lakota person, it seems more pertinent to me that those publications that deal with specific groups, i.e., Oglala, be reviewed by persons from that band. Tribally controlled colleges on reservations could possibly be sources for the reviews.
Review Of Native Americans: Five Centuries Of Changing Images., Joseph C. Porter
Review Of Native Americans: Five Centuries Of Changing Images., Joseph C. Porter
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Native Americans is a lavishly illustrated, attractive "coffee table" book intended for the general reader, and such volumes are significant because they reach wide audiences who frequently learn about complex and important topics from such general works. In Native Americans Trenton and Houlihan essay the imagery of the Native American in European and Euro-American art. They utilize an "integrated" anthropological and art-historical critique" (p. 7), and they use the concept of "cultural areas" to organize their text.
Objectivity In The Interpretation Of The Archaeology Of Ghana, E. Kofi Agorsah
Objectivity In The Interpretation Of The Archaeology Of Ghana, E. Kofi Agorsah
Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
One of the desires of the majority of archaeologists is to obtain from their analyses an objective knowledge of the societies they study. However, the mere desire to obtain objectivity does not ensure its attainment especially where biases cannot be controlled. Added to this difficulty of obtaining objectivity is that not only is the subject matter of archaeology vast and varied, but also archaeologists disagree on directions of study and interpretations, and in many cases very few scholars attempt to put themselves at a standpoint from which to measure the inadequacies and unevenness of their interpretations. Fundamental to interpretations in …
Representing African Music, Kofi Agawu
Representing African Music, Kofi Agawu
Publications and Research
Of all the currents of change that have swept the humanities during the last half-century, the most far-reaching revolve around language. Philosophy, history, and literary criticism, among other language-based disciplines, have developed what is often presented as a largely unprecedented self-consciousness about representation. The message to scholars in nonlanguage-based disciplines is clear: to be taken seriously, one can no longer view language as a transparent window to an objective reality but must confront the foundational political and ideological baggage of the medium itself, as well as its constant slippage in the hands of the producer.

Review Of The Wild Oat Inflorescence And Seed: Anatomy, Development And Morphology, By M. V. S. Raju, David M. Sutherland
Review Of The Wild Oat Inflorescence And Seed: Anatomy, Development And Morphology, By M. V. S. Raju, David M. Sutherland
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
This slim volume describes a detailed study of the reproductive parts of Avena farua, the wild oat plant--a common weed in the northern plains and the probable ancestor of the cultivated oat. The book integrates the author's own work with information from available literature and includes lengthy technical descriptions of the structure and the growth of the inflorescence, the floret, the ovule, the pollen grain, the embryo, the seed, and the young seedling. Throughout the work, the author relates the wild oat's structure and development to other grasses, other monocotyledons, and other seed plants, offering evolutionary interpretations of many …
Review Of The Medicine Men: Oglala Sioux Ceremony And Healing, By Thomas H. Lewis, Elizabeth S. Grobsmith
Review Of The Medicine Men: Oglala Sioux Ceremony And Healing, By Thomas H. Lewis, Elizabeth S. Grobsmith
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Lewis' new book on Oglala ceremony and healing brings together observations and interpretations of his encounters with Lakota healers from the Pine Ridge Reservation during his stay there in the 1960s and 1970s. Lewis was readily incorporated into the community and entrusted with details of conceptions and sources of power which reflect both the relaxed political and social climate and the attitude of openness the Lakota then held about sharing knowledge of their traditions with outsiders. This is fortunate, both for Lewis and the reader, for much of the substance of what Lewis learned is fast disappearing as are the …

Frontier Flintlocks: A Fault Tree Analysis Of Firearm Use At Contact Period Sites Of The Great Plains, Peter Bleed, Daniel Watson
Frontier Flintlocks: A Fault Tree Analysis Of Firearm Use At Contact Period Sites Of The Great Plains, Peter Bleed, Daniel Watson
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Gun part assemblages from several Euroamerican and Native American contact period sites from the Plains are compared as a way of examining how firearms were incorporated into Native technology of the Plains region. These data are interpreted in terms of a “fault tree analysis," an operations research technique that identifies potential points of failure in technical systems in order to study patterns of use, maintenance, and reliability. The analysis indicates distinctively different patterns of gun repair and treatment by Indians and Euroamericans but suggests that Indians were quite capable of repairing firearms and that they systematically reused parts from failed …

Review Of Agricultural Bioethics: Implications Of Agricultural Biotechnology, Steven M. Gendel, A. David Kline, D. Michael Warren, And Faye Yates, Eds., Vernon W. Ruttan
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
This book is largely the product of a series of faculty discussions and a symposium held at Iowa State University in 1987. It represents a comprehensive treatment of the safety and regulatory issues, economic prospects, social considerations, and ethical dilemmas emerging from advances in molecular biology and agricultural biotechnology. Major attention is focused on bovine growth hormone bGH). The book is the most useful introduction to these issues available under one cover. It is also a book of highly uneven quality. The papers range from advocacy journalism to carefully reasoned argument and rigorous sifting of evidence. I particularly recommend the …
Review Of The Struggle For The Land: Indigenous Insight And Industrial Empire In The Semiarid World, By Paul A. Olson, Adolph M. Greenberg
Review Of The Struggle For The Land: Indigenous Insight And Industrial Empire In The Semiarid World, By Paul A. Olson, Adolph M. Greenberg
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
This book is based on the premise that solutions to the problems experienced by many resource management programs currently underway in the semiarid regions of the world can be found in indigenous systems of resource use. Developing out of a 1986 interdisciplinary symposium sponsored by the Center for Great Plains Studies, the book has contributors from agricultural development, anthropology, economics, English, environmental studies, history, law, native studies, and philosophy. Given the magnitude of the human and environmental problems in semiarid lands, a book intended to provide an indigenous counterpoint, as it were, to present use of those areas would not …

"Pap" Singleton's Dunlap Colony: Relief Agencies And The Failure Of A Black Settlement In Easter Kansas, Joseph V. Hickey
"Pap" Singleton's Dunlap Colony: Relief Agencies And The Failure Of A Black Settlement In Easter Kansas, Joseph V. Hickey
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
"T here are gathered at Dunlap and vicinity at the present time between 275 and 300 families of colored people, all of whom are succeeding quite well and many of whom are on the road to prosperity. The plan of Dunlap Colony is very simple, the chief reason, probably, of the success met with, being the fact that every settler is compelled to own his property, no renting being permitted ... as Mr. Atchison expressed it, "everyone is fat and happy . . ."
Review Of The Checkered Years: A Bonanza Farm Diary, 1884-88., H. Elaine Lindgren
Review Of The Checkered Years: A Bonanza Farm Diary, 1884-88., H. Elaine Lindgren
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Mary Dodge Woodward's keen observations, written in her diaries, serve to recreate days of bonanza farming in the Red River Valley of the North in the 1880s. Mary Dodge Woodward came to the Fargo area to live on a bonanza farm managed by her son Walter. A telescope extended Mary Dodge Woodward's view of the land stretching beyond the farmyard. "I stand at the east chamber-which is my observatory- with the spy glass everyday" (82).

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
It now has been nearly forty years since the publication of Nasatir's landmark study Before Lewis and Clark. In those decades it has grown to be an indispensable aid in the historical scholarship of the Great Plains. The reason? This history of the pre-Lewis and Clark Missouri River provides a comprehensive data base and summary that is unobtainable in any other form. The original two-volume set, unfortunately, has been out of print for many years, and the great cost of the original volumes (usually in three figures) on the used book market is added testimony to their scholarly value. …
Revie Of Breaking The Iron Bonds: Indian Control Of Energy Development., Russell Lawrence Barsh
Revie Of Breaking The Iron Bonds: Indian Control Of Energy Development., Russell Lawrence Barsh
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Few things were as exhilarating for Indian tribes in the last twenty years, or as controversial, as energy development. There has long been a need for a worthy successor to Jorgensen's critical collection, Native Americans and Energy Development II (Joseph G. Jorgensen, ed. [Boston: Anthropology Resource Center, 1984]). Unfortunately, Ambler does not meet the challenge.
