Maximilian, Prince Of Wied (1782-1867): Reconsidered, Paul Schach Jan 1994

Maximilian, Prince Of Wied (1782-1867): Reconsidered, Paul Schach

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

On 3 November 1992 the British Society for the History of Natural Sciences convened at the Naturkundliches Museum in Vienna. Since the theme of the six-day convention was "The Exploration and Opening Up of America as Mirrored by Natural History," it is appropriate that one of the papers presented should have been devoted to Maximilian, Prince of Wied, whose complementary expeditions to North and South America have so greatly enriched our knowledge ofIndian cultures that once flourished in Brazil and on the Great Plains. Yet, despite the fact that Maximilian was "by far the best trained scientific observer to explore …

Plains And Prairie Space, History, And The Literary Imagination, In Australia And The United States, Don D. Walker Jan 1994

Plains And Prairie Space, History, And The Literary Imagination, In Australia And The United States, Don D. Walker

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In 1825 a space observer orbiting the earth could have looked down on two enormous land masses separated by more than 7000 miles. In the southern hemisphere the great body of land was Australia, an insular continent surrounded by the southern seas. In the northern hemisphere the great body of land was the United States, framed on east and west by oceans, bordered on the north by the even greater land of Canada and on the south by the lesser land of Mexico. Australia and the United States were roughly the same size, some three million square miles.

Review Of Winged Words: American Indian Writers Speak, Lisa Knopp-Ramsay Jan 1994

Review Of Winged Words: American Indian Writers Speak, Lisa Knopp-Ramsay

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

If we are to make valid critical interpretations of Native American literature, we must "discover, or rediscover, cultural values other than those rooted in Western aesthetic or individual aesthetic sensibilities," Laura ColtelIi recommends. She provides this perspective through a series of ten "oral autobiographies" (interviews) with contemporary American Indian authors. This format provides a particularly poignant form of self-revelation given the rich oral tradition of First Americans.

Review Of The Upstream People: An Annotated Research Bibliography Of The Omaha Tribe, Mark J. Swetland Jan 1994

Review Of The Upstream People: An Annotated Research Bibliography Of The Omaha Tribe, Mark J. Swetland

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Michael Tate has gathered nearly 1900 documents related to the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska and Iowa, providing the reader of The Upstream People with a valuable research tool. Divided into 32 sections with cultural or historical subject headings, each entry is accompanied by a summary and/or critique. Since each item is provided with only a single index entry, browsing the book does require a bit of creativity. Nonetheless, it is a handy device for anyone interested in Omaha research materials.

Review Of The Vanishing American: White Attitudes And U.S. Indian Policy, Robin Ridington, Jillian Ridington Jan 1994

Review Of The Vanishing American: White Attitudes And U.S. Indian Policy, Robin Ridington, Jillian Ridington

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Last spring, as we cleared several generations worth of household goods and memorabilia from the Ridington family home in Westminster, Maryland, we came upon a framed print of "Appeal to the Great Spirit." In it, an Indian "brave" sits astride his horse, his head flung back, his arms beseechingly out at his sides, his palms up. The body language tells of grief and supplication, and of one last desperate hope. The colors are brown, yellow, and orange, the tones of sunset. When we read Brian Dippie's The Vanishing American, we realized that "Appeal to the Great Spirit," or works …

Land Contracts And Traditional Tenure, Sandra F. Joireman Jan 1994

Land Contracts And Traditional Tenure, Sandra F. Joireman

Political Science Faculty Publications

The goal of this project is to identify the current day policy implications of a traditional tenure system, rist or risti, with particular reference to the types of contractual agreements that existed under that system. In order to achieve this, the paper will begin with a reference to the importance of understanding the traditional systems of land tenure. Then, a brief description of the data set and available information will be given, followed by the preliminary results of the data and a description of the kinds of contractual arrangements found under the traditional system. This will be followed by …

Review Of Archaeology And Ethnohistory Of The Omaha Indians: The Big Village Site By John M. O'Shea And John Ludwickson, Robin Ridington Aug 1993

Review Of Archaeology And Ethnohistory Of The Omaha Indians: The Big Village Site By John M. O'Shea And John Ludwickson, Robin Ridington

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Until recently, anthropological archaeology considered the burial grounds of Native Americans to be a proper subject of scientific investigation with little or no consideration for the cultural values of contemporary Native people regarding the resting places of their ancestors. Between 1939 and 1941 archaeologists from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln excavated cemeteries and dwelling sites of the Omaha tribe at the site of their former village near the present town of Homer, Nebraska. Known to Omahas as Ton'wontonga (Big Village), the site was occupied from 1775 to 1845. Under the direction ofJohn Champe, the remains of something like a hundred Omahas …

Southern Alberta’S Cadillac Desert, Mary C. Thompson Aug 1993

Southern Alberta’S Cadillac Desert, Mary C. Thompson

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Reisner (1986) coined the term "Cadillac Desert" to describe the high costs associated with irrigated agriculture in the American west. This concept can logically be extended to the northern-most reaches of the Great Plains in Canada to perform a critical analysis of irrigated agriculture in southern Alberta. Today irrigation technology, which arrived with the Mormon immigration of the 1880s, keeps over a million acres of former shortgrass prairie green. Costs of one of the world's largest snow melt irrigation systems are examined on several dimensions: the massive infusion of state funds necessary to build and maintain the system, environmental degradation …

Nanny Town Excavations: Rewriting Jamaica's History?, E. Kofi Agorsah

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

The main objectives of the study of maroon communities are: to obtain archaeological data that can be used for the interpretation of the socio-cultural patterns of the behavior of the Maroons; to determine the factors that contribute to the location and character of Maroon settlements; and to obtain material for dating and providing a chronological framework for the origins and development of maroon heritage in Jamaica The overall objective is to identify the character and mechanism of the functional adaptation of Maroon societies in Jamaica over time.

Poisons And Antidotes Among The Taman Of West Kalimantan, Indonesia, Jay H. Bernstein Apr 1993

Poisons And Antidotes Among The Taman Of West Kalimantan, Indonesia, Jay H. Bernstein

Publications and Research

Among the Taman of kabupaten Kapuas Hulu, West Kalimantan, certain oils are used to cast and counteract spells. Antidotes are said to be made from the same substance as poisons, and thus a given antidote implies ownership of the poison, and this is one reason people are furtive in using, exchanging, and discussing this aspect of folk-medicine. Magical oils are generally obtained outside Taman society, and are used most often to cure illnesses presumed to have been contracted outside the society. These oils contain essences, and so can be reproduced by adding oil. However, specific knowledge is needed to use …

Review Of Distributional Archaeology By James I. Ebert, Lawrence C. Todd Feb 1993

Review Of Distributional Archaeology By James I. Ebert, Lawrence C. Todd

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This volume is both fascinating and frustrating. The work challenges one of the fundamental assumptions of most archaeological research-the existence of archaeological sites. In the preface, Ebert states that his goal is to bring a number of lines of evidence to bear on what I believe is the most critical question in archaeology today: whether we can continue to think in terms of sites, or whether this most basic unit of archaeological discussion rests upon so many untenable, unarticulated, in fact unarticulatable assumptions as to be a liability to the advancement and credibility of our field (p. xiii).

Review Of Rivers Of Change: Essays On Early Agriculture In Eastern North America By Bruce D. Smith, Karl J. Reinhard Feb 1993

Review Of Rivers Of Change: Essays On Early Agriculture In Eastern North America By Bruce D. Smith, Karl J. Reinhard

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Between 1970 and 1990 there was a burst of paleoethnobotanical research into prehistoric Native American subsistence practices across North America which has resulted recently in numerous regional syntheses. No synthesis is more salient or cogent than that presented for eastern North America by Bruce D. Smith who has been a key researcher in the area of prehistoric subsistence.

Review Of Quivira: Europeans In The Region Of The Santa Fe Trail, 1540-1820, Jane Maclaren Walsh Jan 1993

Review Of Quivira: Europeans In The Region Of The Santa Fe Trail, 1540-1820, Jane Maclaren Walsh

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The subjects addressed in this book are familiar ones: Spanish exploration of the American Southwest and eastward through the Great Plains, and French exploration westward from Louisiana. According to the jacket blurb, William Brandon offers "a closely written synthesis" of these explorations, examining them through a lens provided by a region that he variously calls a frontier and an ancient trade route. Unfortunately, while much of Quivira is synthesis, written as a gossipy digest of historical events occurring in an ever-enlarging region during a three-hundred-year period; little of it is "closely written."

Jean Ensminger. Making A Market: The Institutional Transformation Of An African Society (Book Review), Sandra F. Joireman Jan 1993

Jean Ensminger. Making A Market: The Institutional Transformation Of An African Society (Book Review), Sandra F. Joireman

Political Science Faculty Publications

The publication of Making a Market marks yet another excellent contribution to the field from the Cambridge Series on Political Economy. Similar to the other volumes in the series, it emphasizes the interaction of political structures and institutions with economic change. Yet whereas most of the previous volumes in the series have been written by political scientists or economists, this book stands out as unique in that it is written from an anthropological perspective. Unusual as this is, the book gives an extremely sophisticated and readable application of the new institutional economics to the developing world.

Archaeological Considerations On Social Dynamics And Spatial Pattern Development Of Traditional Settlements, E. Kofi Agorsah Jan 1993

Archaeological Considerations On Social Dynamics And Spatial Pattern Development Of Traditional Settlements, E. Kofi Agorsah

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

One fascinating aspect of archaeological analysis is the explanation of the frequency with which material manifestations of man's behaviour are bonded together. The complexity of the interconnections and associations makes it even more challenging and exciting. Areal variations of the relationships between cultural phenomena are so numerous that archaeologists have, over the centuries, looked for regularities or patterning among distributions of these material manifestations. It is not the patterns that are recognised nor the fact that their distribution varies from place to place that is of greatest interest. Rather it is the past behaviour of the society concerned that is …

Review Of An Ecological History Of Agriculture, 10,000 B.C.- A.D. 10,000 By Daniel E. Vasey, Donald M. Edwards

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Population, environment, and energy are used as three significant determinants of agricultural systems. An Ecological History of Agriculture covers the span of time from the first known managed agriculture to an uncertain future. In a systematic manner, the author moves through chapters from the origins of agriculture to the future, covering topics along the span of time of the origins of agriculture, preindustrial agriculture, pastoralism, industrial agriculture, the present state of agriculture, and the future for agriculture. Interwoven is a global coverage of the influence of population, environment, and energy on agricultural systems as impacting ecosystems of the tropics, dry …

Review Of Sociobiology And The Social Sciences By Robert W. Bell And Nancy J. Bell, David R. Johnson

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The application of evolutionary theory of inclusive fitness to understanding human social behavior has seen a recent resurgence in anthropology, psychology, and sociology. While sociobiological theory and research are still incipient In these disciplines, the perspective has received enough attention to warrant all social scientists becoming more acquainted with the theory and methods of the practicing sociobiologist. The title and modest size of this book (only 130 pages) suggest that it might serve well for this purpose. It contains seven original papers by practicing sociobiologists written for an audience not well versed in the evolutionary model. While terms are carefully …

Law Careers And Community Context: A Comparison Of Rural And Urban Experience, Donald D. Landon Feb 1992

Law Careers And Community Context: A Comparison Of Rural And Urban Experience, Donald D. Landon

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The legal profession is highly differentiated by practice situation, clientele, and community setting, producing multiple professions within the practice of law. Using community size as the independent variable, this paper argues that the structuring of a legal career has less to do with the commonalities of legal training or the presumed solidarity of a learned profession and more to do with the characteristics of the community in which professional practice takes root. With a comparative approach, using data selected from a sample of rural lawyers in communities of 20,000 or less in Missouri, a midsize (150,000) Missouri city, and a …
