Review Of Peyote: The Divine Cactus By Edward F. Anderson, Daniel Gelo Oct 1997

Review Of Peyote: The Divine Cactus By Edward F. Anderson, Daniel Gelo

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The explanation of peyote, the hallucinogenic cactus central to several American Indian ceremonies, requires forays into many diverse fields, from chemistry and botany to ethnomusicology, frontier history, and legal studies. Other books approach peyote via the anthropology of ritual, appending material about the cactus itself. Anderson's work, which first appeared in 1980, places the plant at the heart of inquiry. This new edition offers minor reorganization and a major updating in style and content.

Review Of On Behalf Of The Wolf And The First Peoples By Joseph Marshall Iii, Ellen Dubas Jul 1997

Review Of On Behalf Of The Wolf And The First Peoples By Joseph Marshall Iii, Ellen Dubas

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Much of what has been written about Native Americans has been written by Euro-Americans. It is very important that the peoples write about aspects of their culture that they consider to be most important about themselves. On Behalf of the Wolf and the First Peoples by Joseph Marshall III is, I hope, the first of many such works.

In his book Marshall demonstrates a relationship between Native Americans and the wolf. That humans are a part of nature and not in control of nature is an idea that has begun to resonate throughout Anglo culture in the form of the …

The precise nature of pre-reservation Comanche political organization has long been a vexing question. Key issues include the meaning of numerous reported names for Comanche-speaking subgroups and the construction of power and authority within and across these units. The present work is the most successful attempt to clarify ethnonyms and describe Comanche organizational principles.

Comanche Political History offers a valuable synthesis and interpretation and will be useful to a variety of scholars.

Review Of The Ojibwa Of Western Canada, 1780-1870 By Laura Peers, Edward J. Hedican Apr 1997

Review Of The Ojibwa Of Western Canada, 1780-1870 By Laura Peers, Edward J. Hedican

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This innovative work is an ethno-historical study of the Ojibwa migration from the Great Lakes region to the Plains. Building on earlier studies by Harold Hickerson (The Chippewa and Their Neighbors) and Charles Bishop (The Northern Ojibwa and the Fur Trade), particularly in the use of the Hudson's Bay Company Archives, Peers reconstructs processes of historical change over a ninety year period. She is not content, however, simply to document the historical record, but instead takes on a much broader challenge, and herein lies the major value of her study.

The Ojibwa of western Canada are …

Roma And Forced Migration: An Annotated Bibliography, Dana Neacsu

Books

As of 1997 there were between seven and eight and a half million Roma living in Europe. While there was ample literature on the Roma, in those pre-Internet times, there was no annotated bibliography of relevant works. This selected annotated bibliography assembled texts directly concerned with the forced migration of Roma, as well as other books, articles, periodicals, and various collections which provide background information on the Roma and their socio-economic, political and legal history. All the texts came from the NY Public Library collection. The compilation and the annotations were written by Dana Neacsu, at that time, a Consultant …

Water, Sugar, And Power: Irrigation In Southern Puerto Rico During The Late Nineteenth Century, Marisol Ramos Jan 1997

Water, Sugar, And Power: Irrigation In Southern Puerto Rico During The Late Nineteenth Century, Marisol Ramos

Published Works

The purpose of this thesis was to address an important element in the study of the sugar cane industry in Puerto Rico that has been neglected in its literature: water. By analyzing the failure of the Guayama Irrigation Project of 1864-1866, the thesis showcased the importance of water and the establishment of irrigation projects to local hacendados as an strategy to address the vulnerability that the sugar cane industry at the time was facing: falling prices, low capacity, and the ever present danger of droughts, which the colonial government was unable to solve for lack of liquid capital.

Review Of They Call Me Agnes: A Crow Narrative Based On The Life Of Agnes Yellowtail Deernose By Fred W. Yoget, Assisted By Mary K. Mee, Marika Sandell

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

They Call Me Agnes tells the life story of Agnes Yellowtail as narrated to anthropologist Fred Yoget and assisted in his work by Mary K. Mee. Yoget also includes information from other Crow informants and presents a chapter on Crow reservation culture based on Robert Lowie's classical ethnographical data. The last chapter discusses Crow traditional ceremonies and how they have changed during Agnes's life. In his introduction, Yoget gives details about where he has added material to each chapter and where it is Agnes's voice we are hearing.

Agnes Yellowtail was born in a tent during the Crow Indian Fair …

Allotment, Alcohol, And The Omahas, Benson Tong

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

"The welfare of the Omaha is close to my heart ... I am living among them and I know what I am writing about," wrote Noah La Flesche in a 1916 letter to the Superintendent of the Omaha School, the field official in charge of the Omaha agency. In a passionate tone, La Flesche went on to plead: "If we had a man who would take the drunken Indian, fine him, put him in jail till he sobered up, drinking would not be so bad. This is going to ruin the Omaha. I ask you to help us ... we …

Occupational Segmentation In Kansas And Nebraska, 1890-1900, Lisa M. Frehill Oct 1996

Occupational Segmentation In Kansas And Nebraska, 1890-1900, Lisa M. Frehill

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Population growth in the states of Kansas and Nebraska between 1870-1900 was largely due to the influx of migrants from other parts of the United States and from Europe in search of fertile land to own and till. However, not all migrants were equally successful in attaining this goal. This paper discusses differences in occupational positions of African-American, Native-Born White and Foreign-Born White migrants in Kansas and Nebraska. Evidence from the US. censuses from 1890 and 1900 indicates that African Americans occupied positions of relative disadvantage in the occupational structures of Nebraska and Kansas, being more likely to be relegated …

Regional Zooarchaeology And Global Change: Problems And Potentials, Thomas Amorosi, James Woollett, Sophia Perdikaris, Thomas Mcgovern

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

Zooarchaeology is a potentially critical tool for the reconstruction of past regional landscapes. The subfield is increasingly being asked to contribute to long-term studies of human interaction with the environment associated with national and international investigations of past and future global change. Intersite comparison of animal bone collections (archaeofaunas) is central to such regional approaches. However, zooarchaeologists have identified many factors of deposition, attrition, recovery, and analysis that might appear to make such comparisons problematic. Using selected examples drawn from the North Atlantic and Eastern Arctic, this paper suggests that, while intersite comparison is not a trivial problem, it may …

Genealogical Resources On Chinese Names: An Annotated Bibliography, Sheau-Yueh J. Chao

Publications and Research

This annotated bibliography provides coverage of materials from the period between 1980 and 1995 and also includes important works of historical value published before 1980. The Wade-Giles system is used for the transliteration of Chinese materials. English publications that include Chinese characters transliterated by the author have those transliterations retained in the bibliographical annotations.Certain materials may have been omitted because the author is unaware of their existence or availability here in the United States.A great portion of the Chinese-language publications was found in the collection of Columbia University's C V Starr East Asian Library.

Review Of Wild Animals And Settlers On The Great Plains By Eugene D. Fleharty, Charles A. Flowerday May 1996

Review Of Wild Animals And Settlers On The Great Plains By Eugene D. Fleharty, Charles A. Flowerday

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Wild Animals and Settlers on the Great Plains is an informative but flawed book. As an example of environmental history written by a biologist unacquainted with the fundamentals of doing history, it fails to offer any theory (or theories) of history governing the time and place under scrutiny. What it does provide is a huge amount of information drawn from diaries, letters, and newspapers in an inadequately edited form. Lacking primary quantitative data, Eugene Fleharty, a zoologist at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas, painstakingly provides a great deal of qualitative, albeit anecdotal, information about Euro-American settlement in Kansas …

Review Of Anthropology, Public Policy, And Native Peoples In Canada Edited By Noel Dyck And James B. Waldram, Adrian Tanner May 1996

Review Of Anthropology, Public Policy, And Native Peoples In Canada Edited By Noel Dyck And James B. Waldram, Adrian Tanner

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

In their chapter in Anthropology, Public Policy, and Natives Peoples in Canada, John O'Neil et al. state that anthropology "has affected policy development in virtually every sector of northern community life except medicine" (p. 216). Despite this observation, the book generally tends to stress Canadian anthropology's overall difficulties in aboriginal policy-making. It examines some of anthropology's most sensitive and difficult issues in this area critically, suggesting an ambivalent relationship towards the policy-making process.

The book's focus on anthropology's problems in contributing to aboriginal public policy is established in the editors' introduction, which examines several sources of these difficulties. A …
