Review Of Plains Indian History And Culture: Essays On Continuity And Change By John C. Ewers, Herbert T. Hoover Jul 1998

Review Of Plains Indian History And Culture: Essays On Continuity And Change By John C. Ewers, Herbert T. Hoover

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Twelve chapters form a collection of essays mainly about northern Great Plains tribal cultures and experiences with non-Indians in the past. The omission of a summary essay at the end indicates an absence of unifying themes. Topics related to tribal relations include the clothing of women, women's roles in intertribal wars, the creation of maps by tribal soldiers, and the goals of inter-tribal warfare. Subjects pertaining to Indian-white relations include reciprocal ethnic images, symbols of chief-making by outsiders, reasons for tribal participation in the fur trade, and consequences of disease epidemics.

All chapters originally appeared elsewhere, but their publication under …

Review Of "And Prairie Dogs Weren't Kosher": Jewish Women In The Upper Midwest Since 1855 By Linda Mack Schloff, H. Elaine Lindgren Jul 1998

Review Of "And Prairie Dogs Weren't Kosher": Jewish Women In The Upper Midwest Since 1855 By Linda Mack Schloff, H. Elaine Lindgren

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Spanning the experiences of early immigrants to those of contemporary women, Linda Mack Schloff's concise yet comprehensive history of the contributions of Jewish women in the upper Midwest is an important addition to the region's ethnic literature. The author successfully integrates disparate information from several time periods, enabling the reader to follow a progression of adaptations and social changes. The resulting mosaic displays general trends but also depicts the ways in which individual women worked out distinct solutions to their circumstances. The study relies heavily on first-person accounts or "voices" of both women and men. Excellent photographs enhance and reinforce …

Service Learning In Overseas Nations: U.S. Student Teachers Give, Grow, And Gain Outside The Classroom, Laura L. Stachowski, Virginia A. Visconti

International Service Learning & Community Engagement

Service learning and overseas student teaching are receiving increased attention in education literature. For example, Kielsmeier (1993) touts service learning as an emerging educational improvement strategy (p. 5) in the U.S. school reform movement. Learning activities, by combining classroom work with service/social action projects, ... can help produce dramatic improvements in student attitudes, motivation, and achievement (Nathan & Kielsmeier, 1991, p. 739).

Review Of Myths And Traditions Of The Arikara Indians By Douglas R. Parks, Tressa Berman Apr 1998

Review Of Myths And Traditions Of The Arikara Indians By Douglas R. Parks, Tressa Berman

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Once again, Douglas Parks has offered an unsurpassed account of Arikara oral traditions by carefully selecting and elaborating upon his earlier, though less accessible, Traditional Narratives of the Arikara Indians (University of Nebraska Press, 1991, in four volumes). Parks's careful English translations of a range of Arikara narratives fulfill the interests of specialists and non-specialists alike through detailed descriptions of both stories and storytellers. Old stories become infused with new life as we learn more about the narrators themselves and the various performative contexts in which stories get told. If this was an attempt on Parks's part to bring the …

Review Of Paleoindian Geoarchaeology Of The Southern High Plains By Vance T. Holliday, Berkley Bailey Apr 1998

Review Of Paleoindian Geoarchaeology Of The Southern High Plains By Vance T. Holliday, Berkley Bailey

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Written in a clear, concise manner and profusely illustrated, Vance Holliday's book introduces the serious student of geoarchaeology to the variety and complexity of twenty Paleoindian archaeological sites on the Southern High Plains. A logical sequence of chapters begins with an engaging regional history of Paleoindian geoarchaeological research, followed by comprehensive discussions of the geomorphology, stratigraphy, soils, Late Pleistocene paleoenvironments, and geochronology, jointly presenting Paleoindian archaeological sites as much more than collections of stone tools and extinct animal bones. Holliday includes good summaries of lithic and faunal data for each archaeological site discussed in the text.

Following the presentation of …

Rethinking Clientelism: Demands, Discourses And Practices In Contemporary Brazil, Robert Gay Jan 1998

Rethinking Clientelism: Demands, Discourses And Practices In Contemporary Brazil, Robert Gay

Sociology Faculty Publications

It has been more than a decade since the Brazilian military relinquished its hold on the electoral process. Effective democratic governance has yet to be established, however. Traditional elites still dominate the scene, political parties remain weak, fragmented and unstable, and public administrations continue to pay lip-service to demands for citizens' rights. The source of these various problems of democratic governance is, by all accounts, the widespread practice of exchanging votes for favours, otherwise known as clientelism. In this essay, I argue that clientelism is an essential and endearing feature of the Brazilian political landscape. I also argue, however, that …

Sexuality, Gender, And Identity In Great Plains History And Myth, Peter Boag Jan 1998

Sexuality, Gender, And Identity In Great Plains History And Myth, Peter Boag

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Within just the last few years there has been an explosion in the interest in, and the publication of, gay and lesbian studies. One of the most vibrant fields in the discipline of history today is the history of sexuality. But with all the effort expended in this area of scholarship, there has not been much of an attempt to integrate gay, lesbian, and sexual history into regional history and regionalism. This essay is an attempt to introduce regional history to sexual history. It takes as its subject "non-heterosexuals" and tries to make sense of their history within the context …

Review Of Writings In Indian History, 1985-1990 Compiled By Jay Miller, Colin G. Calloway, And Richard A. Sattler, Joseph B. Herring Jan 1998

Review Of Writings In Indian History, 1985-1990 Compiled By Jay Miller, Colin G. Calloway, And Richard A. Sattler, Joseph B. Herring

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Students of North American Indian history should applaud Miller, Calloway, and Sattler for producing this splendid reference guide. The volume extends the work of Francis Paul Prucha, who edited two bibliographies referencing thousands of books, journals, news articles, governmental documents, and other sources on Indian history and Indian-white relations. The tremendous growth in scholarship regarding the American Indian past would have been far less impressive without Prucha's contribution. The compilers of this new volume, working under the aegis of the Newberry Library's D'Arcy McNickle Center, have made it possible for that growth in scholarship to continue.

Increasingly, as the compilers …

Review Of U.S.-Mexico Borderlands: Historical And Contemporary Perspectives Edited By Oscar J. Martinez, Robert R. Alvarez Jan 1998

Review Of U.S.-Mexico Borderlands: Historical And Contemporary Perspectives Edited By Oscar J. Martinez, Robert R. Alvarez

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

U.S.-Mexico Borderlands is an addition to the Jaguar Books on Latin America Series coedited by W.H Beezley and C.M Maclachlan. In this volume, Oscar J. Martinez pulls together important essays written by outstanding US-Mexico Border scholars and journalists. Official and personal documents enhance the scholarly renditions that span border history and sociology beginning with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and take the reader into current interpretations of the North American Free Trade Agreement. Significantly the book is written in a bilateral-border spirit, its contributors hailing from both Mexico and the United States.

Writing from a lifetime of work on the …

Review Of Reuben Snake, Your Humble Serpent: Indian Visionary And Activist By Jay Fikes, As Told To By Reuben Snake, Paul A. Olson Jan 1998

Review Of Reuben Snake, Your Humble Serpent: Indian Visionary And Activist By Jay Fikes, As Told To By Reuben Snake, Paul A. Olson

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The Great Plains region has given us minority civil and cultural rights leaders out of all proportion to the minority population of the region: Crazy Horse, Quanah Parker, Gordon Parks, Dull Knife, Rudolpho Gonzales, Zitkala Sa, Suzette La Flesche, Earl Little (Malcolm X's father), Tomas Rivera, Ernie Chambers, and on and on. Biographical scholarship unfortunately has not given us many good accounts of these leaders. The gap is dramatized and at least partially filled by Fikes' book. Jay Fikes, working with Reuben Snake just before his death, has written a work that ultimately celebrates both the latter's humility and his …

Review Of Prairie Voices: Process Anthropology In Family Medicine By Howard F. Stein, Charles B. Hennon Oct 1997

Review Of Prairie Voices: Process Anthropology In Family Medicine By Howard F. Stein, Charles B. Hennon

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Prairie Voices is a volume full of surprises. From the Foreword and Preface I was expecting a deep narrative on how the author lives in and experiences the prairie world and found instead a drawn-out discussion about how the author uses poetry in his medical school practice.

Each of eleven chapters gives some glimpse of the author's understanding of the prairie and its culture. Through his poetry and stories Stein attempts to provide the reader with an appreciation of the essence of the prairie, offering a more holistic understanding. We learn about day, night, weeds, drinking coffee, functioning, dependency, weather, …

Review Of Beyond Subsistence: Plains Archaeology And The Postprocessual Critique Edited By Philip Duke And Michael C. Wilson, Alan J. Osborn Oct 1997

Review Of Beyond Subsistence: Plains Archaeology And The Postprocessual Critique Edited By Philip Duke And Michael C. Wilson, Alan J. Osborn

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Philip Duke and Michael Wilson have compiled a well-written, well-organized book designed to "demonstrate the potential of postprocessualism to Plains archaeologists." It contains an editors' introduction, eleven scholarly contributions, as well as two commentaries. The editors suggest that the success of this "new paradigm or research strategy" will be assessed on the basis of its "second-generation scholars" and what they contribute to the "intellectual hybridization" of postprocessualism.

The reader must be aware that postprocessual archaeology does not consist of a coherent body of theory, models, concepts, or robust methods for data collection and analysis. Instead, it is a postmodern response …

Growth Of A Natural History Museum On The Prairie: The University Of Nebraska State Museum, 1871-1996, Thomas P. Myers

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Since its founding in 1871, the University of Nebraska State Museum has been a leader in the study of the natural history of the plains and prairies of the central United States. Its history can be divided into three eras: 1)founding and first steps in a struggling new university (1871-1891); 2) the Barbour-Schultz era (1891-1970) when research focused on vertebrate paleontology and exhibition became a major focus; and 3) recent history (1970-present) beginning with the consolidation of university collections in 1970, the professionalization of museum staff, and increased access through computerization. Research and public exhibits have been prominent components throughout …

Microclimate Of An Aboriginal Winter Campsite At Wanuskewin Heritage Park, Saskatoom, E. A. Ripley, O. W. Archibold, C. Jackson, E. J. Walker

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The microclimate of an aboriginal winter campsite, set in an incised, south-facing meander of a small creek, is compared to the conditions on the adjacent open prairie at Wanuskewin Heritage Park, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Maximum and minimum temperatures and wind speeds were measured daily, on the prairie and in the valley, along with temperatures in a modern canvas tipi erected in the valley. Maximum temperatures tended to be about 1 °C higher in the valley, and 2 °C higher in the tipi, than on the prairie, while minima were 1-2 °C lower. Wind speeds were reduced to about 50% in the …

Review Of A Language Of Our Own: The Genesis Of Michif, The Mixed Cree-French Language Of The Canadian Metis By Peter Bakker, Paul Dube Oct 1997

Review Of A Language Of Our Own: The Genesis Of Michif, The Mixed Cree-French Language Of The Canadian Metis By Peter Bakker, Paul Dube

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

In the current context of reconciliation between the Native peoples and the government of Canada, there may be no stronger outside voice to help the Metis people in their struggle to right the past, be recognized for their contribution to the building of Canada, and to prepare for future than Peter Bakker's brilliant and pioneering book. This study combines a complete knowledge and mastery of all relevant literature and documents, the expert linguist's own research in the field, and an obvious caring, human touch. Its main focus is the language of the Metis people-Michif- but it achieves much more.
