The purpose of this study was to trace the change in settlement patterns in an area located in the semiarid plateau region of Eastern Washington and to determine the cause of such a change. Little has been written about the settlement of this area. Therefore, an attempt has been made to learn what changes in settlement have been made and to explain them.

There is an accepted principle amongst sociologists that all communities have some pattern of stratification. Since the Valley City Negroes, the minority group selected for this research. represent a community structure, some pattern of stratification is present. The volume of migration from farms in the United States has been one of the remarkable· population· trends of the last quarter of a century. In spite of the steady increase in the Nation's population, the number of persons on farms has been declining. The farm population reached the lowest point in perhaps half a century during the years of World War II. This is Ellen Churchill Semple's first book. Originally from Kentucky, Semple (1863-1932) was a geographer. She attended Vassar College and travelled to Germany to study under Friedrich Ratzel, an early human geographer. She published this book several years after her return, quickly establishing herself as one of the most influential American geographers of her time. She was a founding member and the first female president of the American Association of Geographers.
