Body, Blood, And Flood: The Ripple Of Kinesics Through Nature In Leonardo Da Vinci's Art, Rachael Herrera
Body, Blood, And Flood: The Ripple Of Kinesics Through Nature In Leonardo Da Vinci's Art, Rachael Herrera
Scripps Senior Theses
Leonardo da Vinci's art and science have a dynamic relationship that can be used to better understand the role of the individual and the human body within his art. Leonardo believed that movements of the body were expressions of the soul. He also thought that the body was as a microcosm of the physical world. The theories, based in ancient tradition, would be challenged by his work with the human anatomy. By studying his notebooks it becomes evident that Leonardo held nature to be the highest creator of the world but as he worked to understand the human body and …

Reaping The Whirlwind: The Caddo After Europeans, Timothy K. Perttula, Robert Cast
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
The De Soto chronicles introduce us to the Caddo Indian peoples of East Texas in what we can arbitrarily call “historic times.” The Gentleman of Elvas had this to say when the Spaniards reached the Caddo province of Naguatex on the Red River in the Great Bend area of southwestern Arkansas in August of 1542.
The cacique [of Naguatex], on beholding the damage that his land was receiving [from the Spanish forces], sent six of his principal men and three Indians with them as guides who knew the language of the region ahead where the governor [Luis de Moscoso] was …

Exploring Mortuary Behaviors During The Rural Cemetery Movement In The Capital District Of New York State, Jeanette Carioto
Exploring Mortuary Behaviors During The Rural Cemetery Movement In The Capital District Of New York State, Jeanette Carioto
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation investigates the leading causes behind mortuary behaviors in the Capital District of New York during the Rural Cemetery Movement. Four cemeteries were sampled: Oakwood Rural Cemetery, an established rural cemetery; Waterford Rural Cemetery and Blooming Grove Rural Cemetery, two smaller, non-sectarian cemeteries; and St. John’s Cemetery, a Catholic cemetery. The built and natural landscape was the focus during data collection and analysis, to reveal how the cemetery was experienced and how that experience was affected by and affected society. This study combines a quantitative statistical analysis and a qualitative phenomenological study of the cemeteries’ designs, gravestone data and …

The Cuyuna Iron Range: Legacy Of A 20th Century Industrial Community, Frederick Sutherland
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
The Cuyuna Range is a former North American iron mining district about 90 miles(145 kilometers) west of Duluth in central Minnesota. The district was the furthest south and west of the three Minnesota iron ranges (Vermilion, Mesabi, and Cuyuna). In 2011, Students and staff from Michigan Technological University's Department of Social Sciences were asked to identify and promote features of the Cuyuna Range's mining heritage. Methods and approaches of mulitsited archaeology were used to unify the diverse places and themes into a more cohesive narrative. Their investigations focused on sites of technological innovation, social conflict, and important people. One collaborative …
The Economic Life Of The Aetas Of Northern Philippines, Darin Jan Tindowen
The Economic Life Of The Aetas Of Northern Philippines, Darin Jan Tindowen
Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
In today’s world, one of the bases of economic development is the presence of technology. However, not all communities and groups can have an access to the different technologies created by man. And one of these groups is the Aetas of Northern Philippines. This study was conducted to determine the different economic activities, and seasonal activities for survival of the Aetas. The participants of the study were the 25 Aeta families of a rural community in Northern Philippines. In-depth interview, observation, and community immersion were the instruments used by the researcher. Moreover, key informants and the elders were identified to …
Review Of The Portrait Bust And French Cultural Politics In The Eighteenth Century By Ronit Milano, Heather Belnap Jensen
Review Of The Portrait Bust And French Cultural Politics In The Eighteenth Century By Ronit Milano, Heather Belnap Jensen
Faculty Publications
“The term ‘portrait bust’ rarely awakens much enthusiasm among contemporary art connoisseurs, most of whom will likely circumvent major museum galleries devoted to this genre of sculpture” (p. 1). Having dispensed with this matter of business in her opening line, author Ronit Milano delves into the task of convincing her readers that such a response is unwarranted. In certain historical periods, the author argues, the art form was tremendously popular, had myriad uses in the public and private sectors, held widespread appeal for the middle and upper classes, and proved economically and critically profitable for sculptors. The last few decades …

"Pray For The People Who Feed You": Voices Of Pauper Children In The Industrial Age, Rebecca S. Duffy, Jill Ogline Titus
Schmucker Art Catalogs
Following the Industrial Revolution in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, countries such as the United States and England experienced a widening gap between the rich industrialists and the impoverished working class. As a result, poverty quickly shifted from a localized problem to a national epidemic. Each country was faced with the challenges of addressing and alleviating poverty on a national scale. With a limited amount of resources, questions arose about who should receive relief. What should it look like? How should it be administered? And how would poverty and policy affect political, economic, social and familial structures? [ …
The Print Portfolio And The Bourgeoisie In Fin-De-Siècle Paris, Britany Lane Salsbury
The Print Portfolio And The Bourgeoisie In Fin-De-Siècle Paris, Britany Lane Salsbury
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In fin-de-siècle Paris, the print portfolio experienced a popularity that was unprecedented over the course of its long history. Adapted sporadically by graphic artists from the Renaissance onward, prints were produced as series in greater numbers and by a wider range of artists than ever before between 1880 and 1900, and symbolized new, bold, and varied aspirations for the graphic arts as an original and experimental medium. In addition to its stylistic value, artists valued the print portfolio for the subject matter it could cultivate. A growing number of works produced at this time highlighted social issues and expressed political …
Michelangelo And Pope Paul Iii, 1534-49: Patronage, Collaboration And Construction Of Identity In Renaissance Rome, Erin Christine Sutherland
Michelangelo And Pope Paul Iii, 1534-49: Patronage, Collaboration And Construction Of Identity In Renaissance Rome, Erin Christine Sutherland
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
For his greatest patron, Pope Paul III Farnese (1534-49), Michelangelo painted the Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel, two monumental frescoes in the Pauline Chapel, and managed the design and reconstruction of St. Peter's Basilica. The pope and artist maintained a harmonious and remarkably productive association for the entirety of Paul's fifteen-year pontificate. The artist's projects at the Vatican defined the most important sacred spaces of Renaissance Rome and helped construct the identity of the papacy at the inception of the Counter-Reformation. At the same time, these are the finest examples of Michelangelo's mature painting and architecture. Following Giorgio Vasari's …

The Comic Grotesque: Troubling The Body Politic In American Graphic Satire From World War I To The Great Depression, Bryna Rae Campbell
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the comic grotesque as a strategy of critical engagement within the thriving field of U.S. graphic satire from World War I through the Great Depression. During this period, artists across the political spectrum were using disruptive bodily forms, along with references to pain, vulgar associations and crude techniques, to challenge political authority, undermine attempts to smooth over political turbulence, and address communal anxieties about social tensions and the direction of the nation. Emerging in the context of record unemployment rates, the explosion of political radicalism, dramatic shifts of gender and class power dynamics, and emerging threats of …
Lucas Cranach's Samson And Delilah In Northern European Art, Jacqueline S. Spackman
Lucas Cranach's Samson And Delilah In Northern European Art, Jacqueline S. Spackman
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
This thesis explores images of Samson and Delilah in northern Europe in the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. My research focuses primarily on Lucas Cranach’s painting, Samson and Delilah of 1528-30, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. By examining prints and decorative artworks that include the Samson and Delilah narrative, it is my goal to understand where Cranach’s painting fits into the larger art historical picture. Through examining the locations and suggested meanings of other works, I hope to establish that it is also possible to understand the intention and meaning behind Cranach’s painting. I analyze the work …
On The Fringe Of Italian Fascism: An Examination Of The Relationship Between Vinicio Paladini And The Soviet Avant-Garde, Christina Brungardt
On The Fringe Of Italian Fascism: An Examination Of The Relationship Between Vinicio Paladini And The Soviet Avant-Garde, Christina Brungardt
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Vinicio Paladini's career as an artist, architect, and cultural critic illuminates the paradoxes of the Italian avant-garde between the World Wars. He emerged as an early proponent of communist-Futurism in 1922 and attempted to integrate futurist techniques with the Marxist theories of Antonio Gramsci. In addition, Paladini provided a direct point of contact between the Russian and Italian avant-garde, traveling to Moscow and reporting to the Italian public on Soviet artists' developments in film, photomontage, and architecture. Yet he struggled to merge his leftist ideology with his artistic practice as Fascism spread throughout Italy. Although he has been largely neglected …
Changing Identities In A Changing Land: The Romanization Of The British Landscape, Thomas Ryan
Changing Identities In A Changing Land: The Romanization Of The British Landscape, Thomas Ryan
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis will examine the changes in the landscape of Britain resulting from the Roman invasion in 43 CE and their effect on the identities of the native Britons. Romanization, as the process is commonly called, and evidence of these altered identities as seen in material culture have been well studied. However, the manifestations of this process in the landscape have been less well examined. Applying current theories in landscape archaeology, the Selsey peninsula oppidum of the Atrebates and two hillforts of the Durotriges, sites that have been well excavated and examined, will be the focus of this thesis. The …

Infrastructure, Production, And Archive: American And Japanese Video Art Production Of 1960s And 1970s, Ann Atsuko Adachi
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Focusing a study on the infrastructure of artistic production and maintenance opens a space in which to examine the relationship between artistic inspiration and knowledge making, the occurrences and the writing of its history. In the case of the comparative study of the emergence of Japanese and American video art, common artistic technique employed may indicate motivations derived from the technical possibility of the video medium, while the study of infrastructure demonstrates how large-scale funding, formation of archives, the establishment of systems of distribution and channels of education affect the emergence and development of video art as a genre. This …

If You See Something, Say Something: A Look At Experimental Writing On Art, Charlotte Lucy Latham
If You See Something, Say Something: A Look At Experimental Writing On Art, Charlotte Lucy Latham
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Signs all over New York City state, "If you see something, say something," but museum studies repeatedly find viewers do not attend to pictures, just as eye witness testimony is invariably skewed. Ways of seeing have been limited to known ways of discussing. Alternative approaches offer new insights. The first section, "Experiments in Art Writing," examines two texts: T.J. Clark's The Sight of Death, a journal of his daily visits looking at two Poussin paintings, for which he maintains the ambiguity of exploration and argues to keep visual images from their dissolution into political symbols; and, Charles Simic's Dime Store …

An Impossible Utopia: People’S Art And The Cultural Revolution, Molly E. Reynolds
An Impossible Utopia: People’S Art And The Cultural Revolution, Molly E. Reynolds
Student Publications
The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution period of the People’s Republic of China (1966-1976) was crucial in the creation of modern-day China. The material culture of that period mirrors the turbulent political activity of students and the directives of the Communist Party’s central leadership during the height of the Mao Zedong personality cult. The commercial manufacture of posters, often the sole decoration available for the public and private spheres, offers strong examples of the design style of this time. The posters are not only indicative of the propagandistic fervor of production, but the aesthetic changes initiated in the visual and performing …
