Lefthanded pitcher Alfred “Army” Cooper was born in Kansas City, Kansas in 1899 and had a long career with Black baseball clubs between the First and Second World Wars. He played baseball while serving with the 25th US Infantry Regiment in Nogales, Arizona during most of the 1920s. After his discharge in February 1928, he pitched for the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro National League until 1930. The following year, he played for several weeks with Gilkerson’s Union Giants, a prominent barnstorming team, before rejoining the independent Kansas City Monarchs as they barnstormed through the end of the summer. …

Baseball Career Of Andy Cooper In Kansas, Revised, Mark E. Eberle

Monographs

Andrew Lewis Cooper was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006. He was a lefthanded pitcher, who played and managed in the Negro Leagues from 1920 until his death in 1941, mostly for the Detroit Stars and Kansas City Monarchs. Cooper also played baseball in California, Cuba, and the Far East. However, his life before 1920 has been little studied. Andy Cooper was born in Texas, probably in 1897. Although he was a resident of Waco and began playing baseball in northern Texas, contemporary newspaper reports document an African American pitcher from Texas named Andrew “Lefty” Cooper …

Shattered Windows: The Story Of Genora Johnson Dollinger, Eva Stone, And The Women Of Michigan, Brett Kovel Jan 2025

Shattered Windows: The Story Of Genora Johnson Dollinger, Eva Stone, And The Women Of Michigan, Brett Kovel

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The thesis, Shattered Windows, explores the significant roles of Genora Johnson Dollinger and Eva Stone in Michigan’s labor movements during the 1930s. It focuses on Dollinger’s leadership in the Flint Sit-Down Strike of 1936-37, where she mobilized women to join the picket lines, culminating in the formation of the Women’s Emergency Brigade. Her influence extended beyond Flint, inspiring women across Michigan to challenge corporate power and defend workers’ rights. Following Dollinger’s example, Eva Stone led protests against rising meat prices, further uniting women in economic activism. This work examines the unique contributions of these women, situating their efforts within a …

A Vanguard Of All Progressive Humanity: Youth Culture, Mobilization, And The New Soviet (Young) Person In The Post-Stalin Ussr, Talia Ostacher

History Honors Projects

Amongst the many changes which shook the Soviet Union in the aftermath of the death of Josef Stalin in 1953, one of the least researched is the changing role of youth. The post-Stalin era saw a reappraisal of the role of youth in the Soviet project, who were increasingly positioned as central to the creation of a communist society in the Soviet imaginary. In this Honors Project, I analyze Soviet youth culture in the post-Stalin period, examining the varying strategies employed by the Soviet state to stimulate youth participation and create the New Soviet (Young) person in an era where …

Sputnik: Starting Gun Of The Space Race, Samuel K. Lavine Jan 2025

Sputnik: Starting Gun Of The Space Race, Samuel K. Lavine

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

The launch of the Soviet Satellite SPUTNIK is widely regarded as the start of the Space Race. It thrust the issue of space exploration into the national spotlight and brought about issues that defined the final years of the Eisenhower administration. LIFE Magazine and other American news publications covered the Space Race and the fledgling years of the newly established National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). LIFE Magazine from 1957 to 1961 covered the American reaction to SPUTNIK and served as a primary platform of news coverage about the Space Race. During this time the Eisenhower administration sought to accomplish …

Chenoweth Prevails: The Connection Between Social Standards And The Marimba’S Development In The Western Art Music Tradition, Jackson Hall Jan 2025

Chenoweth Prevails: The Connection Between Social Standards And The Marimba’S Development In The Western Art Music Tradition, Jackson Hall

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Among percussionists, the names of many marimbists come to mind before that of Vida Chenoweth (1928-2018), the pioneer of the modern marimba recital. Chenoweth began her first recital tour in the early 1950s at a time when the marimba did not yet have a dedicated solo repertoire, and women were largely excluded from performing on orchestral instruments. This thesis explores the musical and social contexts in which Chenoweth performed and worked, with particular attention to her recital history, critical reviews, and, through works written specifically for her performance, her technical abilities. She not only sparked the evolution of marimba technique …

Courting The Court: Understanding The Power Of The Supreme Court Through The History Of Abortion, Rowan Danou

Research Honors

Looking at the history of abortion in the legal and political sphere through the lenses of Rober Dahl, David Adamany, and William Lasser shows the views of the Supreme Court being predominantly shaped by elite policy scholars and the institutions of which they are a part. These views are nurtured outside the political mainstream and come into force when realignments bring new ideas and personnel into the policy crafting arena.

Behind The Mask: Unveiling The Hidden Narratives Of The Spanish Flu And Unearthing Its Elusive Memory, Dagan M. Turcotte-Cutkomp

Research Honors

In the fall of 1918, as World War I drew to a close, a greater killer swept across the globe: Influenza. Within a year, influenza infected one-third of the world’s population and killed between 50 to 100 million people, whereas the First World War claimed an estimated 16 million lives. Yet, when we study the early 1900s, the Flu is a minor footnote and has remained largely dormant in pandemic memory until the recent COVID-19 Pandemic. Why has the Flu been ‘forgotten,’ and what untold stories challenge the established narratives surrounding it? By exploring both collective and individual memories of …

Inaugural Season Of Intercity Base Ball In Leavenworth And Kansas City, 1866: Frontiers And Antelopes, Revised, Mark E. Eberle

Monographs

The inaugural year for baseball played among formally organized base ball clubs (BBC) in Kansas and in Kansas City, Missouri was 1866. Little has been written about the events of that year other than retellings and embellishments of a myth created in 1927 about James Butler “Wild Bill” Hickok umpiring a game between the Kansas City Antelopes and Atchison Pomeroys to prevent violence during the contest. In truth, the first club organized in the area by local business owners and other professionals was the Frontier BBC of Leavenworth in November 1865. The first club organized in Kansas City, Missouri was …

British And South African Perceptions Of African Participation In The African Military Campaigns Of World War One, Eric Mathew Martinez Jan 2025

British And South African Perceptions Of African Participation In The African Military Campaigns Of World War One, Eric Mathew Martinez

Theses and Dissertations

Historians interested in reconstructing the events of World War One have consistently noted that the military campaigns that occurred in sub-Saharan Africa have been given scant attention. It is commonly accepted among researchers that while there has been some focus on the impressions of the individual European soldiers involved in this conflict, wide gaps still exist in the literature. Very significantly, a thorough search of the literature clearly reveals that the perceptions of whites towards their African counterparts who participated in the military campaigns has been very much neglected. This dissertation helps to close this gap by focusing on the …

La Historia Externa Del Español Hasta La Reconquista, Alicia Westmoreland Jan 2025

La Historia Externa Del Español Hasta La Reconquista, Alicia Westmoreland

World Languages and Cultures Senior Capstones

This paper talks about the romance language, Spanish, which evolved from Vulgar Latin after the fall of the Roman Empire. Influenced by the Visigoths, Moors, and the Christian Reconquista, its linguistic development reflects centuries of cultural exchange. The Moors introduced Arabic vocabulary, while the Reconquista reinforced Castilian dominance. Despite external influences, Spanish retains a phonetic system closely linked to Latin. This essay examines Spanish’s historical linguistics, highlighting how conquests, migrations, and societal shifts shaped its evolution.

Wine As Gossip: The Making Of Living Objects And Human Experience, Elena Angerman Jan 2025

Wine As Gossip: The Making Of Living Objects And Human Experience, Elena Angerman

American Studies Honors Papers

In this honors study Wine as Gossip: The Making of Living Objects and Human Experience, I argue that there is an inherent power to wine as a means to subvert the narrative of the current American myth. I emphasize how the living nature of wine reflects how objects can have a level of consciousness and power. In the opening chapter, “Gossip and Wine: Uncovering Forms of Resistance and Methods to Subvert and Revise Power Structures” gossip serves as a means to understand how wine can be used in this subversion. I argue that wine and gossip are linked in …

Heroes Or Tyrants? Using The Leadership Of Chiang Kai-Shek To Re-Examine The Legacy Of Abraham Lincoln, Edward Woolery Jan 2025

Heroes Or Tyrants? Using The Leadership Of Chiang Kai-Shek To Re-Examine The Legacy Of Abraham Lincoln, Edward Woolery

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Today, reappraisal of history has become paramount in society. Scholars seek to contextualize building names, statues, and the land we live on. However, historians time and time again fail to reappraise popular figures in American history and misrepresent them by placing them on a pedestal. This thesis will analyze the existing body of scholarly work and primary historical sources to compare two such leaders from history in Chiang Kai-shek and Abraham Lincoln. Chiang Kai-shek is largely unfamiliar to American audiences; however, he provides a model in which Americans can reappraise Lincoln. Both Lincoln and Chiang led their nations through civil …

How Did A Democrat Win In Deep Red Kentucky? A Study Of Andy Beshear's 2019 And 2023 Electoral Victories, Edwin Wilborn

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Democrat Andy Beshear won his first election as governor of Kentucky in 2019, surprising many by defeating an incumbent Republican governor in a GOP-dominated state and a state that Donald Trump had won handedly in 2016. While Democrats had historically been the dominant party in the commonwealth, by the time of Beshear’s 2019 gubernatorial campaign, that was no longer the case. Beshear’s ability to not only win again but to win by a larger margin against a Trump-backed candidate in 2023 begs two questions: how did Beshear win, and is his success replicable for future Democrats?

Following a discussion of …

Captain George W. Bradley, A.Q.M., And The Bradley Base Ball Clubs, Revised, Mark E. Eberle

George W. Bradley served as a quartermaster for the New York Volunteers during the US Civil War. After the war, he became an assistant quartermaster (A.Q.M.) in the regular army with the rank of captain. Captain Bradley served at several posts, mostly in the West. While serving at Fort Harker, Kansas in 1867 and at Fort Union, New Mexico in 1868, teams from the forts were organized under the name Bradley Base Ball Club (BBC). In Kansas, the Bradley BBC defeated the Smoky Hill BBC from Ellsworth, but in New Mexico, they lost to the Santa Fe BBC in a …
