Thia chapter will deal with the earlier sources of information about the dramatic companies. The provincial towns of England are the best sources of information about the English companies of drama. Reference to the drama usually appeared in the Court books of the corporation, also in the account books, or even letter-books. The reason for this is not hard to understand, for when a dramatic company visited a provincial town, their first duty was to present their license to the Mayor and also to his court of Aldermen, so that they could obtain permission to play. Just as there is satire from Demosthenes through Juvenal to G. K. Chesterton, so there is comedy from Aristophanes through Plautus to Oscar Wilde. To show that comedy can be the gentler brand of indictment will be the task of this, our paper. It is true that, in the case or the (comic) playwright, the aim, than that of the professed censor, is rather more vaguely reprehensive. One may not deny, however, that the serious reader finds in Plautus's comedies the rationes seminales of the three hundred years' "dying fall" of the Roman Empire. James Michael Curley Scrapbooks

The James Michael Curley Scrapbook Collection consists of digitized microfilmed copies of notebooks kept by Curley from 1914-1937. These notebooks contain news clippings that were drawn primarily from Boston newspapers. Curley was born in Roxbury, MA in 1874. He served four terms as Mayor of Boston: 1914–1918, 1922–1926, 1930–1934 and 1946–1950. He also served as Governor of Massachusetts from 1935-1937. In addition to Curley’s political career, the scrapbooks also include clippings about his first wife Mrs. Mary Herlihy Curley (1884-1930) and their daughter Mary D. Curley (1909-1950). A selection of the notebooks were microfilmed in 1962. The microfilm can be …

The Great Plains, in 1840 appeared to those living in the Eastern part of the country.as a forbidden land which man was never to occupy. This land was barren except for the roaming Indian tribes, a few trappers and hardy frontiersmen who moved West. In log homes near Santa Fe some of the braver families had settled; a few forts had been constructed for trade with the Indian and for protection. Other than the early settlers mentioned, none ventured beyond the Missouri river, and the Great Plains were barren, wind-swept lands, later to be conquered and settled.
