The Evolution Of The Fleet Submarine In The United States Navy, Robert P. Kendall Apr 1981

The Evolution Of The Fleet Submarine In The United States Navy, Robert P. Kendall

History Theses & Dissertations

This thesis examines the evolution of the United States Navy fleet submarine from the T-class of 1916 through the Tench-class of 1943. The fleet submarine played a major role in the defeat of Japan in World War II by attacking enemy lines of communication and supply, vital to an island empire. The author reviews the trials and errors of submarine construction in the United States Navy. Each succeeding class of submarines is discussed in order to show the progress made, leading to the excellent weapon provided for submarine officers and men with which they destroyed Japanese merchantmen and warships. Japanese- …

England's King Henry I And The Flemish Succession Crisis Of 1127-1128, Sandy B. Hicks Jan 1981

England's King Henry I And The Flemish Succession Crisis Of 1127-1128, Sandy B. Hicks

Quidditas

Historians have long appreciated the political significance of the Flemish Succession Crisis of 1127-28 upon the development of both Flanders and Capetian France. Anglo-Norman specialists, though, have generally overlooked the critical impact this crisis had upon the latter years of the reign of King Henry I and, indeed, upon the future direction of the Anglo-Norman state. This paper will examine why Henry judged the crisis as a threat to the very survival of his own realm, how he responded to it, and why is was of such importance to England and Normandy.

Mission Of Protest : General John Armstrong's Response To The Continental System, 1806-1810, Thom M. Armstrong

Dissertations and Theses

Although not well known to students of American history today, General John Armstrong was, in his day, a prominent and colorful public figure. From 1804 to 1810, he held the difficult position of United States Minister to France at a time when the world was in upheaval resulting from the Napoleonic Ware. As Great Britain and France struggled for supremacy, the United States--the world's foremost neutral commercial power--was slowly, but inevitably, drawn into this struggle, becoming the victim of the hostile edicts of the two major belligerents, as they wantonly violated established practices of international law.

Henry Agard Wallace And Latin America (1932-1946): The Limits Of American Liberalism, Jason Steiker

Honors Papers

The crowd waited anxiously, expecting the nominations for Vice President to begin momentarily. Throughout the galleries the chant began, "We want Wallace!" It swelled into an uproar and the chairman of the convention, Sam Jackson, despite all of his efforts, could not stop the chanting and the noise. Finally Jackson called for adornment. The entire stadium retorted "No!" Sam Jackson spoke up, "The ayes have it" and the days work at the convention ended despite all the booing the Chairman's action instigated. The next day, the anti-Wallace forces had manipulated enough delegates to nominate Harry S. Truman for Vice President …

The Homefront In World War Ii: The Effects Of The Conflict On Ellensburg, Washington, 1940-45, Kenneth D. Munsell Jan 1981

The Homefront In World War Ii: The Effects Of The Conflict On Ellensburg, Washington, 1940-45, Kenneth D. Munsell

All Master's Theses

The stresses and strains placed upon American society by World War II are studied in microcosm by a detailed look at the effects of the conflict on the small central Washington town of Ellensburg, Washington. The war disrupted the normal workings of society as men entered the armed forces in great numbers and families moved from town to town in order to staff military bases and mad defense industries. The entire society geared up for the war effort. The business community, farmers, and the military all faced great changes. Also, homelife and social life reacted to wartime pressures. The study …

The American Career Of Henry Bouquet, 1755-1765, Louis M. Waddell Jan 1981

The American Career Of Henry Bouquet, 1755-1765, Louis M. Waddell

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

It has not been our good fortune to experience this afternoon the bright invigorating October day I had anticipated. I wanted to introduce Henry Bouquet by a reference to his reliance on the beautiful October climate as he fearlessly marched fifteen hundred soldiers into dangerous Indian lands in Ohio, in 1764. Bouquet relied on the clear dry weather to speed his march, and on the absence of foliage to protect his men from any surprise attacks like the one that had decimated General Edward Braddock's military column, of roughly the same size, at a crossing of the Monongahela River on …

Civil Pageantry In The Reigns Of Elizabeth I And James I Of England, 1558-1625, Marjorie Ann Watkins Oct 1980

Civil Pageantry In The Reigns Of Elizabeth I And James I Of England, 1558-1625, Marjorie Ann Watkins

History Theses & Dissertations

Spectacle and pageantry played an important role in the monarchies of Elizabeth I and James I of England. Generally pageants served reciprocal purposes. It provided a way to let the realm view the state of the monarch's health and allowed the monarch to impress his subjects with royal grandeur. Additionally, it served as a vehicle for the manifestation of the public's desires concerning the direction which the country might move with the accession of a new monarch. Also, civic pageants provide the historian with an indication of popular like or dislike of a sovereign. In this thesis, a considerable amount …

Urs Schwarz, The Eye Of The Hurricane: Switzerland In World War Two, Heinz K. Meier

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

"Switzerland in World War II" has become a favorite object of investigation and subject of treatment by Swiss journalists, publicists, political scientists and historians. The flood of articles and monographs on every conceivable aspect of that topic has become so overwhelming as to make it almost impossible for one person to keep track of it, let alone read and digest it. And yet, according to Urs Schwarz, ther is a gap in this outpouring of hsitorical literature: There are no English language accounts on the role of neutral Switzerland in World War II. His Book The eye of the Hurricane …

Castle Thunder : The Confederate Provost Marshal's Prison, 1862-1865, Alan Lawrence Golden

Master's Theses

The Civil War is, in many respects, one of the most tragic, yet fascinating periods of this nation's history. During the last one hundred years scholars have stud ied numerous aspects of this conflict in great detail. The subject of this thesis, however, has received meager attention. The focus of this study is the Provost Marshal's prison in Richmond, Virginia, called Eastern District Military Prison or, as it is more commonly known, Castle Thunder. Castle Thunder was the only prison of its kind in the South as most of its inmates were political prisoners, deserters, and criminals, rather than captured …
