"Over a week ago President Obama mentioned the crusades in his remarks at the National Prayer Breakfast. How should one respond to such a statement? Is it valid or not to compare the context of the crusades to the twenty-first century context of ISIS?"

Posting about Obama comparing ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) to the medieval crusades from In All Things - an online hub committed to the claim that the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ has implications for the entire world.

A Brief History Of The Relationship Between The Royal House Of Hahs Burg And The Swiss Confederation, Dwight Page Feb 2015

A Brief History Of The Relationship Between The Royal House Of Hahs Burg And The Swiss Confederation, Dwight Page

Swiss American Historical Society Review

When the v1s1tor to Vienna v1s1ts the royal palace of the Hofburg, he will note, inscribed on numerous pillars and monuments, the following inscription carved into the crest of the House of Habsburg: Austriae Est lmperare Orbi Universo or Alles Erdereich ist Osterreich Untertan, meaning "The Entire Earth is Subject to the House of Austria." Never has there been a more true declaration, for in the sixteenth century, during the reign of the Habsburg Emperor Charles V, the sun indeed never set on the Habsburg Empire

More Than Objects: Understanding Female Slaves In Barbados In The Early Modern Period, Phoebe Martine Downes Feb 2015

More Than Objects: Understanding Female Slaves In Barbados In The Early Modern Period, Phoebe Martine Downes

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis will focus on representations of African women in the British colony of Barbados in the early modern era, using travelers' accounts, planters' records and the writings of abolition-minded reformers. The topic is significant because most scholars have focused on British colonial life during the nineteenth century, examining the planter class or the region's colonial commodities.

The period from 1600 to 1700 was an era of beginnings in the British colonial world, with England establishing its first Caribbean colonies and experimenting with different economic strategies to gain wealth. This period was also significant due to the emergence of slavery …

Beyond Domestic Empire: Internal- And Post-Colonial New Mexico, John R. Chávez Jan 2015

Beyond Domestic Empire: Internal- And Post-Colonial New Mexico, John R. Chávez

History Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to outline the connections between internal colonialism and post-colonialism, two dimensions of an evolving colonial paradigm. To test these theories against historical reality, they are applied to ethnic Mexicans and Indians, especially Navajos, in New Mexico in order to ground them and colonialism in general at the regional level. This paper claims that internal colonialism continues effectively to explain the historic subordination of indigenous and mixed peoples within larger states dominated by other groups. This condition understood, the paper sees postcolonial theory as providing ideas to end internally colonized societies since the theory critiques …

Democracy And Nobility, Allen C. Guelzo Jan 2015

Democracy And Nobility, Allen C. Guelzo

Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications

Americans love revolutions. Our national identity began with a revolution, and a revolutionary war that lasted for eight years; and we cheer on other people’s revolutions, as though we find satisfaction in multiplying our own. “I hold that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing & as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical,” wrote Thomas Jefferson. “No country should be long without one.” An excited James Garfield, in his maiden speech in the House of Representatives in 1864, asked whether his colleagues “forget that the Union had its origin in revolution.” Ralph Waldo …

The Austrian Army, Lee Eysturlid Jan 2015

The Austrian Army, Lee Eysturlid

Faculty Publications & Research

During the long, on-again-off-again wars generated by the events of the French Revolution, the Habsburg monarchy would contribute the largest single contingent of troops to the fight.1 For the Austrians, the wars fought over this nine-year period were a long-term disaster. Entering the war with a small, professional army, the monarchy would constantly be at loose ends to find the financing and manpower to carry out the demands of a European-wide war. Worse yet, and critical to remember, was that the disparate Habsburg lands were incapable of the political revolution that had allowed a homogenous France to mobilize so many …

First Impressions: Anglo Travelers And The Origins Of El Paso, Texas, 1846-1852, Mark Cioc-Ortega

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

El Paso del Norte was a thriving agricultural region on the Santa Fe-Chihuahua trail when the U.S.-Mexico War (1846-1848) and the 1849 gold rush turned it into a border town on the southern route to California. The diaries and letters of the Anglo-American soldiers, engineers, and gold seekers who passed through the area in the 1840s and 1850s document the emergence of a new political and economic landscape that helped define the pattern of Anglo-Mexican relations in the new town of El Paso, Texas (across the Rio Grande from El Paso del Norte), well into the next century.

The fifth through the tenth centuries was a period of significant transformation for Europe. As a result of the Germanic invasions and the collapse of the economy, the last Roman Emperor in the West, Romulus Augustulus (475-76), was deposed in 476. The Eastern Roman or Byzantine Empire would continue in a much-truncated form until the Ottoman Turks conquered Constantinople in 1453. Not only did the Germanic tribes continue their expansion into the Roman territories in the fourth and fifth centuries, the Arabs conquered substantial territory in the seventh and eighth, and Viking, Magyar, and Arab attacks tore apart Europe in …

The Politics Of War: The Abrams Doctrine, The War Powers Resolution, And Neoconservatism In The Post-Vietnam Era, Andrew Chase Lore Jan 2015

The Politics Of War: The Abrams Doctrine, The War Powers Resolution, And Neoconservatism In The Post-Vietnam Era, Andrew Chase Lore

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This thesis examines three reactions to the Vietnam War—Neoconservatism, the Abrams Doctrine, and the War Powers Resolution—and argues that those reactions have shaped America‟s foreign policy agenda in the last fifty years. Beginning with the 1964 Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, exploring the Reagan era and its interventions in Grenada and Latin America, and ending in the mid-1990s, this thesis traces the politics of war in the United States since Vietnam and argues that the culmination of these three reactions during the George H.W. Bush presidency has resulted in the subsequent direction of the country‟s objectives abroad.
