More Than Hungry: How Political Narratives Built & Maintain Hunger In The United States, A. Camille Karabaich May 2021

More Than Hungry: How Political Narratives Built & Maintain Hunger In The United States, A. Camille Karabaich

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

This Note aims to examine the role of the legal system in creating and maintaining hunger in the United States. Through this lens, the Note discusses the shift necessary to support specific legal interventions to end hunger. This Note begins by discussing how hunger was built in the United States through policies regarding land, housing, incarceration, and food, and the narratives that allowed these policies to flourish. These policies created hunger by creating pockets of poverty and disempowerment. Although many individuals and organizations donate their time, money, and energy to support local food banks, soup kitchens, and free school meal …

Between Life And Death: Pregnancy, Abortion, And Childbirth In The Nazi Concentration Camps, Grace Corkran May 2021

Between Life And Death: Pregnancy, Abortion, And Childbirth In The Nazi Concentration Camps, Grace Corkran

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Abstract

To date, Holocaust historians have often grappled with documenting life and death in the Nazi concentration camps for pregnant women. As a result of limited source material, historians have struggled to incorporate the narratives of pregnant women into the historiography and tend to group topics surrounding pregnancy into larger works on gender in the Holocaust. This approach has created a gap in the historiography on reproductive health and female bodies in the Holocaust. In this paper, I will examine the narratives of Holocaust survivors, including the testimonies from pregnant women and doctors, as well as the photographs and drawings …

Explaining Reproductive Health Disparities: Violence In The “Colorblind” Institution Of Medicine, Chineze Osakwe May 2021

Explaining Reproductive Health Disparities: Violence In The “Colorblind” Institution Of Medicine, Chineze Osakwe

Honors Scholar Theses

Medical policies have resulted in violence that has a formal role in regulating the reproductive rights of women of African descent in the United States from the Jim Crow era (circa 1965) to present day (2021), resulting in significantly racialized reproductive health disparities regardless of social or economic influences. This thesis explores why reproductive violence against African-American women persists, regardless of women’s own class and educational background. I have focused on the potential impact of two structural components that I hypothesized contributed to the perpetuation of reproductive violence against Black women and persistent health disparities. The two factors explored in …

“The White Plague Seems To Love The Black Victim:” The Racialization Of Tuberculosis In The Anti-Tuberculosis Campaign And Black Resistance To The “Negro Tuberculosis Problem,” 1870- 1930, Dillon Prus May 2021

“The White Plague Seems To Love The Black Victim:” The Racialization Of Tuberculosis In The Anti-Tuberculosis Campaign And Black Resistance To The “Negro Tuberculosis Problem,” 1870- 1930, Dillon Prus

History Honors Papers

Tuberculosis was one of the deadliest diseases in late nineteenth and early twentieth century America. Those most impacted by the disease were African Americans living in poverty. White public-health authorities interpreted the Black community’s susceptibility to tuberculosis as evidence of their biological inferiority. However, Black physicians, professors, club women, and nurses courageously resisted these racialized notions via academic journals, medical conferences, and periodicals. Black patients being treated in tuberculosis institutions contributed to sanatorium newspapers such as The Thermometer, establishing a voice to express their pain in ways similar to their white counterparts. Remarkably, physicians of color also found ways to …

Has Maize Overtaken Our Reality? A Personal Briefing, Biochemical Comparison, Agrigenomics, And History Of Maize, Nader Pahlevan

Honors Theses

Maize (Zea mays ssp. Mays) is a revolutionary cereal grain that has raced to the world’s most popular staple crop, transforming societies and impacting history. This paper aims to build and portray the story maize has created through its journey to world domination. The important details that encompass this literature are maize’s cultural significance in my life’s story, the comparison of various starches broken down into amylose and amylopectin ratios, a summative historical account on maize’s spread throughout numerous parts of the old world, and the genetical analysis of maize that explains the key features that have led …

Saga Beyond The Gate: Chapter One, The Coming Of The Gate Ghost, Tristan B. Miller May 2021

Saga Beyond The Gate: Chapter One, The Coming Of The Gate Ghost, Tristan B. Miller

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

“Saga Beyond the Gate: Chapter One, the Coming of the Gate Ghost” explores performance sculpture used as religious ritual. My work emphasizes ritual, creation myths, relics, physical manifestations of lived religion, and the power of narrative belief. One often turns to religion, science, or spirituality, to seek answers to questions about being a conscious entity, and one’s journey to the end. This saga uses scripts from all three of these schools of thought, placing the world of the Gate Ghost into tangible reality, as a play on a stage. Artefacts represent objects of power and mystery. Characters embody morality tales, …

"At The Peril Of Our Lives": Race, Citizenship, And Philadelphia's 1793 Yellow Fever Epidemic., Abigail Posey

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

The late-eighteenth century was a crucial time for determining the social role of black people in Philadelphia, and Pennsylvania at large. In 1780, the state legislature began a gradual abolition process that contributed to a growing free Black population in the city, while many other Black Philadelphians remained in bondage. Their livelihoods remained restricted by anti-Black laws that contributed to the overall poor health of Black Philadelphians. As the yellow fever epidemic began in 1793, Philadelphia’s medical community supported racist scientific myths that Black people possessed a natural immunity to yellow fever. In an agreement with the city and Dr. …

French Neologisms In Larousse Dictionary Of 2018 And 2019, Amelia Wahyu Julisdianti, Danny Susanto

International Review of Humanities Studies

Larousse is one of the most important and widely used French-language dictionaries. Larousse dictionary annually releases its new edition with the addition of on average 150 new words due to the appearance of new words, known as the phenomenon of neologism. The aim of this study is to identify how new words or neologisms in the Larousse dictionary edition of 2018 and 2019 were formed using a morphological approach. The analysis essentially uses the combination of theories of Lehmann & Martin-Berthet (1999) and Grevisse, M., & Goosse, A. (2007) on four types of word formation: derivation, composition, siglaison (acronym), and …

Florida And Iowa: A Contemporary View, Franklin A. Doty Apr 2021

Florida And Iowa: A Contemporary View, Franklin A. Doty

Florida Historical Quarterly

Within the span of one generation after the admission of Florida and Iowa to the Union, the citizens of the two states confronted each other in the awful strife of the Civil War. Portents of this bitter separation had been discernable in the birthing of the states, but who could have said with assurance that these two frontier communities, having so many more roots and inheritances in common than they had fatal divergencies, would shortly stand drawn in battle array against each other? Regardless of their common institutional origins, the two communities came to subordinate themselves to, and form a …

Allotrioemeis: Or, A Preposterous Preponderance Of Pins Produced, Strangely Doesburg

Phi Alpha Theta Pacific Northwest Regional Conference

Debellatus, the 1698 account of a witchcraft trial in Bargarren, Scotland, suggests new interpretations of witchcraft epidemiology. From late 1696 through 1697 a young girl named Christian Shaw experienced fits, visions, trances, and even levitation. More interesting, and decidedly the more tactile, was her tendency to demonstrate her affliction by vomiting various items: pins, straw, warm coals, balls of hair, and pieces of dung. Previous scholarship has dubbed this phenomena Allotriophagy, linking it to compulsive consumption conditions like Pica, seemingly overlooking their presence in contemporary Scottish medical literature. Furthermore, coincident accounts of stagecraft reveal numerous techniques were being practiced to …

Killing Time, Not Germans: Reserve Positions In The 3rd Canadian Infantry Division During The Battle Of Normandy, Alex Souchen Apr 2021

Killing Time, Not Germans: Reserve Positions In The 3rd Canadian Infantry Division During The Battle Of Normandy, Alex Souchen

Canadian Military History

Allied victory during the Battle of Normandy is often attributed to operational and strategic factors, but the high-level focus on command and combat effectiveness obscures the infantry’s lived experiences. Although combat was their primary purpose, soldiers killed time as often as they killed Germans. This article examines the significance of the reserve position and the “down time” that soldiers spent within its confines. It argues that the reserve position was critical to combat effectiveness and high morale because it provided defensive and offensive flexibility and surplus labour for work parties and logistical tasks, while officers used it to integrate reinforcements …

From Memory To Present To An Uncertain Future: An Analysis Of History And Policy On Chinese Food Security, Justin Mascarin Apr 2021

From Memory To Present To An Uncertain Future: An Analysis Of History And Policy On Chinese Food Security, Justin Mascarin

Honors Projects

This paper seeks to analyze China’s historical relationship to famine to better understand contemporary Chinese policy on food security. The historical analysis focuses both at the political level and the level of the peasantry, with a particular focus on the Great Chinese Famine. This Chinese specific analysis in conjunction with an understanding of food security history helps to better understand two white papers on food security from the Chinese Government in 1996 and 2019. This paper finds these white papers to be response to deep rooted doubts in the ability for the Chinese Government to logistically support such a massive …

Re-Thinking Pandemics: State, Society, And Disease In British History, 1830-1960, Meghan Walsh

History & Classics Undergraduate Theses

Written during the COVID-19 pandemic, this paper began in an attempt to understand why, after 100 years since the most devasting pandemic in modern history, the world was faced with yet another, but more importantly how people responded to this new normal. In order to understand better how society today responded to the COVID-19 pandemic, we need to know the past and see what has emerged with each new pandemic. For the purpose of this thesis, I examine the cholera epidemics of 1831-1866, the 1918 influenza pandemic, and the polio epidemics of the mid-twentieth century in British history. The thesis …

Methods of Historical Research: Spring 2021 (Archived)

Whenever we think about African American history, we put our focus straight to slavery or the civil rights era, though it is much more than that. African American history in San Antonio has impacted the city’s business and economics, education, religion, migration, and foodways. Regarding foodways, I chose to research the life of George Banister, an African American man who became a well-known fraternalist and chef from working at the Argyle Hotel for over 30 years. George Banister used his expertise as a chef to offer support to the education system, church, social clubs, and actively integrating Black foodways into …

Visionary, Convivial And Resilient: A History Of The Dublin Gastronomy Symposium And Review Of The Dgs 2020 Online, Anke Klitzing, Brian Murphy

European Journal of Food Drink and Society

In early 2019 the Dublin Gastronomy Symposium Organising Committee settled on the theme of ‘Food and Disruption’ for its fifth biennial conference in May 2020. Little did the committee suspect how prescient this title would be as the descriptor of what was to happen during the Covid-19 pandemic that descended upon the global community right in the run-up to the conference. The lockdown instigated across many countries in March 2020 led to an early decision to take the Dublin Gastronomy Symposium 2020 online. This decision required considerable courage as similar events were being postponed in the hope that the crisis …

An Interdisciplinary Approach To Historic Diet And Foodways: The Foodcult Project, Susan Flavin, Meriel Mcclatchie, Janet Montgomery, Fiona Beglane, Julie Dunne, Ellen Ocarroll, Andrew Parnell

European Journal of Food Drink and Society

This research note introduces the methodology of the FoodCult Project, with the aim of stimulating discussion regarding the interdisciplinary potential for historical food studies. The project represents the first major attempt to establish both the fundamentals of everyday diet, and the cultural ‘meaning’ of food and drink in early modern Ireland, c 1550-1650. This was a period of major economic development, unprecedented intercultural contact, but also of conquest, colonisation and war, and the study focusses on Ireland as a case-study for understanding the role of food in a complex society. Moving beyond the colonial narrative of Irish social and economic …

The Impact Of State Violence On Women During The 22 Years Of Dictatorship In The Gambia, Isatou Bittaye-Jobe Feb 2021

The Impact Of State Violence On Women During The 22 Years Of Dictatorship In The Gambia, Isatou Bittaye-Jobe

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis investigates the gendered dynamics of dictatorship in The Gambia by exploring the impact of state sanctioned violence on women during former President Yahya Jammeh’s twenty-two years of tyranny in the country. During the two-decade long brutal reign under Jammeh, Gambians from all walks of lives faced gross human rights violations and abuses that inflicted collective national trauma on the population. Therefore, this project examines how Jammeh’s tyrannical rule affected women’s rights, health, and wellbeing. Using a content analysis approach coupled with semi-structured interviews with victims and survivors, I argue that although the dictatorship affected all sectors of the …

Human Remains From 41bw5, The Roseborough Lake Site, Diane E. Wilson

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The analysis of human remains from the Roseborough Lake site (41BW5) provided in this article is a description of skeletal material collected or salvaged from this disturbed archaeological site in Bowie County, Texas. The material is presented here as an aid to future investigations and is compared with previously studied human remains from the region. Data was collected following standard techniques outlined in the Texas A&M University, Physical Anthropology Laboratory Data Form and those presented in Buikstra and Ubelaker (1994). The poor state of preservation and fragmentary nature of the remains limited the amount of information that could be recovered.
