Spiritual Economics: Some Financial Considerations Of Mormon Settlement In Illinois, R Philip Reynolds Jan 2007

Spiritual Economics: Some Financial Considerations Of Mormon Settlement In Illinois, R Philip Reynolds

Librarian and Staff Publications

Thirty thousand Mormons Lived in Western Illinois in the 1840’s, with only about half of them living in Nauvoo. Almost all discussion concerning Mormons between 1839 and 1846 is limited to Nauvoo. Researchers are lucky to find a handful of brief articles about Mormons outside the city. Upon further investigation, these settlements emerge as being far more important to the success of Nauvoo than this neglect indicates.

Ultimately, most settlements resulted from three causes: Mormon interaction and experience with Illinois before their expulsion from Missouri, overwhelming economic need, and proselyting successes. In many of their actions, church leaders assumed a …

French Influence Overseas: The Rise And Fall Of Colonial Indochina, Julia Alayne Grenier Burlette Jan 2007

French Influence Overseas: The Rise And Fall Of Colonial Indochina, Julia Alayne Grenier Burlette

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis concerns colonial French Indochina, specifically the area known today as Vietnam. Located south of China and east of India on the southeastern-most peninsula of the Asian continent, Indochina comprises the modern-day countries of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. After European contact, the future country of Vietnam was divided into three main provinces: Tonkin in the north, Annam in the center, and Cochinchina in the south. After their establishment in the Southeast Asian country in the mid-nineteenth century, the French sought to improve existing, and to build new infrastructure to increase the productive capacity of the colony. The more efficient …

The Art Of War : Deconstructing The Monolith Of The World War Ii Poster, Sean Williams Jan 2007

The Art Of War : Deconstructing The Monolith Of The World War Ii Poster, Sean Williams

Honors Theses

For most Americans, the introduction to World War II posters, or even the entire field of posters during wartime in general, comes in the form of an elderly, yet bold looking man wearing red, white and blue. He wears a striped hat, and stands with his finger pointed outwards. The message he gives is clear --"I want YOU!" This image has been faithfully reproduced in social studies and history textbooks for years. (Indeed, both generations of my family saw such an image in their school books).

Uncle Sam, though, dapper as he may be, is merely one example of hundreds …

Swiss American Historical Society Review

The first big event of my life was on the 26th of September 1911, at two

in the afternoon, when I first saw the light of the world. I was entered in the

civil register of the city of Luzern as Gustav Theophil Durrer, Luzern, son of

Dr. Gustav Durrer, senior; citizen of Dallenwil (Nidwalden) and Luzern. My

parents and sisters (aged 2 and 4) lived in the Lowen-Platz in Luzern.

Playing And Eating Democracy: The Case Of Puerto Rico's Land Distribution Program, 1940s-1960s, Ismael Garcia-Colon

Publications and Research

In the early 1940s, the colonial government of Puerto Rico with the consent of the U.S. federal government began to elaborate a land reform. Under Title V of the Land Law of 1941, the government established resettlement communities for landless families. One of their goals was to transform landless agricultural workers into an industrial and urban labor force by teaching them “democratic, industrial, and modern” habits. Government officials distributed land to landless families through lotteries, portraying the ceremonies as acts of democracy. Community education programs produced literature, films, and posters aimed at fostering development and political participation. The colonial state …

Changing Maine, 1960-2010: Teaching Guide, Richard Barringer, New England Environmental Finance Center

Maine History & Policy Development

Unlike forty years ago, none of us is now certain what the future holds for Maine – except that it will be different. Maine has been transformed by the events of the recent decades. We have come into a new world, a new time – a new historical era, if you will. This new era, like previous eras in Maine history, will require of us new ways of thinking, new ways of understanding, new ways of organizing ourselves as a community of people, if the values and culture we share and cherish are to endure and flourish.
