Fort Berthold Indian Reservation: A Land Use Study To 1971, Paul Felter May 1972

Fort Berthold Indian Reservation: A Land Use Study To 1971, Paul Felter

Theses and Dissertations

Can the land resources of a contemporary Indian reservation provide the basis for a self~sufficient community? To help answer that question, this study traces the agricultural development as well as other land use programs and problems of the Three Tribes of the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in North Dakota.

The procedure involved a detailed study of the impact of Bureau of Indian Affairs-inspired agricultural projects, treaties and land cession agreements, land allotment programs, land fractionalization, and the building of the Garrison Dam. The results obtained show that the semi-agricultural Three Tribes passed from self-sufficiency before their reservation was established into …

Contacts Between Rome And Ancient Ethiopia, John Theodore Swanson May 1972

Contacts Between Rome And Ancient Ethiopia, John Theodore Swanson

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

At the death of Augustus, Rome possessed four principal provinces: in Africa: Numidia, Africa (Tunisia), Cyrenaica, and Egypt. Soon after, Mauretania as:well would become a province, thus creating a sphere of direct Roman control stretching across the top of the African continent. These territories would become Rome's most valuable possessions, economically and culturally; their influence on Roman history, an influence not to be overlooked by historians., would be profound. Yet the narrow strip of land that was Roman Africa represents only a tiny portion of the vast bulk of the African continent, and there were peoples beyond the Roman frontiers …

The War On Words : The Office Of Censorship In World War Ii, Alvin William Mcdaniel Jr. Jan 1972

The War On Words : The Office Of Censorship In World War Ii, Alvin William Mcdaniel Jr.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this paper is to report on the results of research of the United States Office of Censorship from the birth of that office in 1941 to its timely death in 1945.

Jim Heath, in his article, “Domestic America during World War II: Research Opportunities for Historians,” provided the impetus for the research that has resulted in this paper. Professor Heath states that most histories of World War II have relegated the American domestic scene to a secondary place in the process of reporting on the more exciting diplomatic and military aspects of the period. He suggests that …

Hernan Cortes: Conquistador And Colonizer, Hubert J. Miller Jan 1972

Hernan Cortes: Conquistador And Colonizer, Hubert J. Miller

History Faculty Publications

The conquest and colonization of Mexico initiated by Hernan Cortes resulted in the fusion of the Indian and Hispanic cultures. This fusion led to the "mestizo" culture. Cortes was the bearer of the Hispanic heritage just as the Aztecs and other Indians in Mexico and the Southwest were the carriers of the Indian heritage. In studying the life of Cortes, he is seen not only as a military conqueror but also as a colonizer in which role he left a more lasting legacy than he did as the victor over the Aztec Empire. This booklet focuses on Cortes' colonizing efforts. …

A Study To Determine Reasons Why Lds Students Were Not Enrolled In Lds Seminary In The Southern Alberta Seminary District During 1970-71, Robert Owen Mcclung Jan 1972

A Study To Determine Reasons Why Lds Students Were Not Enrolled In Lds Seminary In The Southern Alberta Seminary District During 1970-71, Robert Owen Mcclung

Theses and Dissertations

Religious education in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as given by the seminaries is to help youth achieve a meaningful testimony that God lives, Jesus is the Christ, and Joseph Smith is a prophet of God. The purpose of this study was to determine why some youth were not taking advantage of this training by enrolling in seminary.
It was determined that the teachers were a negligible reason for lack of enrollment. Rather, the reasons stemmed more from a lack of awareness of the nature of the seminary program by some priesthood leaders, by the youth and …

Introduction To Ethnic Voters And The Election Of Lincoln, Frederick C. Luebke Jan 1971

Introduction To Ethnic Voters And The Election Of Lincoln, Frederick C. Luebke

Department of History: Faculty Publications

A twofold purpose informs this anthology of essays on ethnic voters in the presidential election of 1860. First, it gathers together a great quantity of factual information about immigrants and politics on the eve of the Civil War. Naturally, the Germans receive the greatest amount of attention. Not only did they rival the Irish in numbers in 1860. but they were also the most diverse ethnic group in America. The essays of this volume also offer much data about politicians and their perceptions of the democratic process, about political parties and the social bases of their support, and about political …

After the cruel death of their daughter in the racist bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, Mr. and Mrs. Chris McNair did not react in bitter hatred. Wanting so much that she would not have died in vain, Chris McNair pleaded: "We must work all the harder to bring about a more decent world for the children who are left."
