On Sport and Society
It seems that the biggest news in baseball this week is off the field. Usually, that is not a good thing. Yesterday, the Commissioner of Baseball, Rob Manfred, announced that Pete Rose and sixteen other players have been re-instated from baseball’s “permanently ineligible” list. Among the sixteen others are several players caught up in the Black Sox scandal of 1919.
Challenges Of Conceptualizing, Creating, And Researching The History Of South Louisiana Hospitals, Chandler D. Smith, Jennifer K. Lloyd
Challenges Of Conceptualizing, Creating, And Researching The History Of South Louisiana Hospitals, Chandler D. Smith, Jennifer K. Lloyd
Library Faculty Publications
Objective: To create a resource guide on closed and relocated historical hospitals in the southern region of Louisiana, documenting rural and urban hospitals with their address, years open, interesting facts, and photographs if available.
Methods: A reference question about a historical hospital in the area prompted the idea, as when doing research for information about the hospital, it was more challenging than initially thought it would be to find photos and other information. Information was collected from a wide range of sources such as directories, newspaper and magazine articles, government reports, etc. Using this information, we have built a public …

Unease At Home: Evading And Resisting The Draft During The Vietnam War, Michael R. Beadle
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
In Evading and Resisting the Draft, this work defines and provides examples of draft evasion and resistance by prospective draftees in the United States during the Vietnam War. This work seeks to consider the motives and actions taken by draft evaders and resisters in the context of the overarching Cold War and tumult of the Vietnam War era. Attention is given to various demographic groups from African American, rural, and working-class communities and the disparities faced by many. In understanding these ideas, actions, and motives, readers gain a deeper understanding of the relationships forged between government and individuals during the …

“Here Come The Canadians … To Restore Our Freedom To Us”: “And We Will Praise God, When The Canadians … Have Vanished Back To Canada”, Eric Mcgeer
Canadian Military History
The following editorials and articles, translated from the Nijmegen newspaper De Gelderlander, offer English-language readers insight into the concerns and perspectives of the Dutch as they dealt with the uneven transition from occupation to liberation and the welcome yet at times troublesome presence of the Allied forces, the Canadians in particular. Although the physical damage inflicted by the war was everywhere visible, it was the moral and psychological effect of the occupation on the young that formed the greatest source of concern, especially when those who had come of age during years of deprivation and disorientation encountered exotic young …

“We Are Now Getting A Canadian Occupation”: Liberators And The Liberated In The Nijmegen Salient, 1944-45, Eric Mcgeer
Canadian Military History
Liberation came at a high price to the already devastated city of Nijmegen during Operation Market Garden. It remained a frontline city for nearly seven months, during which time Nijmegen and the surrounding area came to be “occupied” by 1st Canadian Army. The presence of a friendly but foreign army was welcome but proved to be a mixed blessing as the local inhabitants sought to resume control of their lives in a time of shortages, suspension of normal morality and conflict between the Dutch themselves. The protracted stay of the Canadians after the war was frustrating for both the liberators …
Bringing Servicewomen Into Focus: Exploring Methods For Indexing Second World War Archival Photographs At Library And Archives Canada, Rebecca Murray
Bringing Servicewomen Into Focus: Exploring Methods For Indexing Second World War Archival Photographs At Library And Archives Canada, Rebecca Murray
Canadian Military History
The Second World War saw women officially serving in the Canadian military in capacities other than nursing, breaking into roles historically held by men. The service of over fifty thousand Canadian women is documented in photographs held at Library and Archives Canada; photographs that allow historians to widen the lens on the traditional narrative, but only if they can find them. This article presents two methods for indexing archival photographs and highlights the particular challenges of identifying servicewomen in the archival record and bringing our aunties and grandmas into focus.

The Need For U.S. Stability Policing, John F. Hussey
The Need For U.S. Stability Policing, John F. Hussey
Joint Force Quarterly
The article advocates for the creation of a U.S. Military Police Stability Battalion to enhance the country's ability to maintain peace in conflict zones. By integrating interagency law enforcement assets, such as the Department of Justice and the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, this battalion would rapidly deploy and tailor operations to regional needs, such as countering trafficking. While not involved in military or counterinsurgency training, the battalion would require military protection. Establishing this capability would reduce reliance on allies, provide greater flexibility for commanders, and help prevent fragile states from collapsing, ultimately saving costs by investing …
The Profession Of Arms: What Scholars, Practitioners, And Others Of Note Have Had To Say, Gregory D. Foster
The Profession Of Arms: What Scholars, Practitioners, And Others Of Note Have Had To Say, Gregory D. Foster
Joint Force Quarterly
The article discusses the evolution of military expertise and national security management in the context of modern challenges. James Stavridis, Ervin J. Rokke, and Terry C. Pierce argue that the traditional concept of military expertise, as defined by Samuel Huntington—focused on the "management of violence"—is outdated. They suggest that today’s military professionals are better described as "managers of effects," which includes both kinetic (physical force) and nonkinetic (cyber, soft power) capabilities. They emphasize the importance of civilian leadership in defining strategic objectives while the military manages a broader array of tools to achieve desired outcomes. James Locher adds that the …

Key initiatives include partnering with veteran organizations to highlight military benefits, offering military internships to introduce youth to nontraditional military career paths, and strengthening outreach to influencers, especially parents, who significantly impact enlistment decisions. The Implications Of The New Security Environment On The National Health Systems Enterprise, Martin Charles Bricknell, Derek Licina
Joint Force Quarterly
This article explores the strategic integration of military and civilian health systems in response to large-scale conflicts, emphasizing the critical role of civil-military cooperation. NATO's experience with the war in Ukraine highlights the importance of interoperable health systems across the Euro-Atlantic region, while the Asia-Pacific presents unique challenges due to its geographic dispersal and alliance structures. The U.S. National Disaster Medical System, strengthened by lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, is positioned to manage medical evacuations and casualties in future contingencies. The article advocates for the U.S. military health system to be considered as strategically vital as the defense-industrial complex, underscoring …

This summary urges reflection on how to align national interests, strategies, and actions to prevent future conflicts and …

Good Samaritans: Applications Of Social Christianity By Southern Baptists During The Early Twentieth Century, Alyson Marie Fagan
Good Samaritans: Applications Of Social Christianity By Southern Baptists During The Early Twentieth Century, Alyson Marie Fagan
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
In the early twentieth century, the Social Gospel movement sought to spur Christians to serve their neighbors through social and political reform, often through ecumenical groups. However, Southern Baptists remained distant from this movement because they were weary of the liberal Christianity expressed by Social Gospel leaders that appeared to replace the power of the Gospel with acts of service. Instead, the Southern Baptist Convention formally addressed social reforms and civic engagement by creating the Social Service Commission and Committee on Civic Righteousness. These groups expressed the need to reform the home and advocated civic engagement while remaining true to …
