Responding To The Global Crisis: Jacques Maritain, World War Ii, And New York's École Libre, Jacob Saliba

The Meanings Of The Hospital De San Lázaro In Seventeenth-Century Manila, Francis Galasi Nov 2024

The Meanings Of The Hospital De San Lázaro In Seventeenth-Century Manila, Francis Galasi

Journal of Global Catholicism

The Hospital de San Lázaro was a specialized health facility in the early modern Philippines, dedicated to the care of lepers and sufferers of other contagious diseases. While it was established for this specific purpose, its role in colonial society varied. This versatility reflected the distinct priorities and commitments of the groups pulled into its orbit, as each charged San Lázaro with a unique meaning. This article explores how and why these groups—the indigenous Filipinos, the Spanish residents and the Discalced Franciscans—understood San Lázaro in their own way. It highlights the ability of fixed institutions, such as a hospital, to …

The American Way Of Studying War: What Is It Good For?, Michael P. Ferguson Nov 2024

The American Way Of Studying War: What Is It Good For?, Michael P. Ferguson

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

Academic military historians, government institutions, and defense practitioners have unique purposes for advancing the study of war that influence the way they consume and produce history. Although there is substantial scholarship covering how the discipline of military history has changed since the late nineteenth century, the literature surrounding why it changes and how it is used is less plentiful. Using primary and secondary sources to contextualize debates between historians, this study traces major developments in military historiography, considers the US Army’s relationship with its history, and explores potential connections between a history’s purpose and its use for military professionals.

Two Roads To Cornwall: The Cornwall, The Cornwall & Lebanon, And Gilded Age Rail Competition, Shane A. Keenan Nov 2024

Two Roads To Cornwall: The Cornwall, The Cornwall & Lebanon, And Gilded Age Rail Competition, Shane A. Keenan

Masters Theses

Historians have devoted much attention to the overbuilding and excessive competition among railroads in the 1880s. However, they have mostly focused on larger railroads like the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad (Reading). Smaller railroads like the Cornwall Railroad and the Cornwall & Lebanon Railroad are less well known but play an important part in that larger story. Both railroads ran between Lebanon, Pennsylvania and Cornwall, Pennsylvania. Their primary purpose was to ship iron ore from the mines in Cornwall. Few outside of Lebanon County or Lancaster County, Pennsylvania know about these two railroads, yet they are a …

The Cold War Never Ended, Paul Mitura

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The two countries that played the largest role in defeating Nazi Germany were allies at one moment and enemies the next without any form of an attack or hostile military action. The unusual phenomenon of two world superpowers opposing each other for several decades without firing a shot in a worldwide ideological war was unique and confined only to this period of world history. This was a polarizing global event that was believed to have been titled such by Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and it remains unknown who coined the phrase "There have been three world wars; two hot, and …

Four Swiss At Fort Laramie, Jocelyn Moore Nov 2024

Four Swiss At Fort Laramie, Jocelyn Moore

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Starting as a frontier fur trade post in the 1830’s, Fort Laramie, Wyoming Territory, played a prominent role in western expansion. Purchased by the United States government in 1849, the fort’s location near immigrant trails and Native American homelands provided a front row seat to American history. It is estimated that over three hundred thousand people passed the fort during their migration westward. Of the multitude, many were Swiss, including Private Jacob Haudenschild, Sergeant Leodegar Schnyder, Dr. Rudolph B. Hitz and Captain Alfred von Wattenwyl.
