On The Edge: Blacks And Hispanics In Metropolitan Miami Since 1959, Raymond A. Mohl Mar 2022

On The Edge: Blacks And Hispanics In Metropolitan Miami Since 1959, Raymond A. Mohl

Florida Historical Quarterly

On Monday, January 16, 1989, hundreds of blacks in Miami took to the streets in angry rage for the fourth time in the 1980s. Over several days, they burned cars and buildings, looted stores, pelted passers-by with rocks and bottles, and faced off with riot police in Overtown and Liberty City, Miami’s two major black communities. The incident that touched off this new expression of black anger was sadly familiar. A Miami policeman had shot and killed a black man fleeing a traffic infraction on a motorcycle, while a second black man, a passenger on the motorcycle, was thrown from …

Charles Townshend And Plans For British East Florida, Donna T. Mccaffrey Mar 2022

Charles Townshend And Plans For British East Florida, Donna T. Mccaffrey

Florida Historical Quarterly

Almost every historical account of the background of the American Revolution necessarily brings in the career of Charles Townshend.1 He introduced and guided through Parliament in 1767 the Townshend program of taxation for America. In so doing, Townshend reopened the dispute between the colonies and the mother country that had been moderated in the previous year by the repeal of the Stamp Act. For some years Townshend had been deeply concerned about colonial matters and was regarded as the expert on American affairs. 2 As a member of the Board of Trade, he had studied colonial problems. At the request …

The International Ocean Telegraph, Canter Brown, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

The Summer of 1865 was one of great relief for most citizens of the so-recently reaffirmed United States of America. A few weeks earlier, on April 12, Robert E. Lee had surrendered his Confederate Army of Northern Virginia to a victorious Ulysses S. Grant and, before the end of the following month, the last Confederate force of consequence remaining in the field, then serving under General Edmund Kirby Smith of St. Augustine, had followed suit. The nation had been shocked and saddened by the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln two days after Lee’s surrender, but to some extent the outrage …

The Spanish St. Augustine Community, 1784-1795: A Reevaluation, Sherry Johnson Mar 2022

The Spanish St. Augustine Community, 1784-1795: A Reevaluation, Sherry Johnson

Florida Historical Quarterly

While documentation is available, historians have not accurately defined the community in St. Augustine after the return of Spanish rule in 1784. Community studies abound for towns in Europe and North America, but community study techniques, which have been so successful in reinterpreting North American colonial history, have been underutilized by Latin American historians. Eighteenth-century St. Augustine presents an opportunity to investigate one frontier settlement and the origins of its inhabitants. However, the point of beginning for any such study must be a definition of the structure of the community itself. Research reveals that St. Augustine resembled other Spanish American …

"A Gang Of Pirates": The Confederate Lighthouse Raids In Southeast, Rodney E. Dillon, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

In July of 1861, three months after Confederate gunners opened fire on Fort Sumter igniting the Civil War, a distinguished group of United States Army, Navy, and civilian officials met in Washington, DC. These men, Flag Officer Samuel F. DuPont, Commander Charles H. Davis, Major John G. Barnard, and Superintendent Alexander D. Bache of the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey, had been appointed by the Navy Department as a blockade board to study the geography and topography of the southern coastline, the state of Federal naval resources and manpower, and the strategic and tactical plans necessary to make President …

Tom Moreno: A Pensacola Creole, William S. Coker

Florida Historical Quarterly

A recently published volume about the Moreno family of the Gulf coast contained a picture and brief note about Tom Moreno who died in Pensacola, September 23, 1942. Tom reportedly was over 100 years old at the time of his death, but he could have been as young as eighty-three or as old as 105 depending upon which source one used (see table). An article by Gary R. Mormino, which was published in the Florida Historical Quarterly, called attention to an interview with Moreno conducted by Modeste Hargis in 1937 as part of the Work Projects Administration, Federal Writers’ Project. …

From Can't To Can't: The North Florida Turpentine Camp, 1900-1950, Robert N. Lauriault

Florida Historical Quarterly

The dark slides like a tight glove over the solitary woods camp, and no man’s light affronts the majesty of the night sky. An insipid stirring of the warm evening air sets a single pine bough to swaying. Overall, stillness reigns— silence but for the monotony of a distant chuck-wills-widow and the earnest chant of frogs from some distant bog beyond the gloomy line of slash pines— the trees that make of the camp an island in a shadowy, evergreen sea.

Sibling Stewards Of A Commercial Empire: The Innerarity Brothers In The Floridas, Thomas C. Kennedy Mar 2022

Sibling Stewards Of A Commercial Empire: The Innerarity Brothers In The Floridas, Thomas C. Kennedy

Florida Historical Quarterly

Marquis James, in his biography of Andrew Jackson, alluded to John Forbes and Company, a firm which had succeeded Panton, Leslie and Company in 1804, and asserted that members of the Forbes enterprise “remained the actual rulers of Florida.” Among its members in 1804 were James Innerarity and his brother John. Of the latter, Marquis wrote: “Like a white shadow, John Innerarity glided through the weaving labyrinth, never on the losing side.“ Another scholar contended that individuals connected with both companies “were influential with the governments under which they lived, and exercised unmeasured control over the Indian tribes with which …

Pedro Menéndez's Strategic Plan For The Florida Peninsula, Eugene Lyon Mar 2022

Pedro Menéndez's Strategic Plan For The Florida Peninsula, Eugene Lyon

Florida Historical Quarterly

It is evident that perceptible interconnections linked the efforts of the several sixteenth-century explorers of North America. Professor Paul Hoffman has pointed out how legend and geographic surmise drew Europeans to the continent from the time of John and Sebastian Cabot and Juan Ponce de Leon to that of Walter Raleigh. The later adventurers were heritors of the wisdom of folly of their predecessors, from whatever nation or kingdom they might have come.

The Spatial Organization Of Pre-Colonial African Kingdoms: The Empires Of Ethiopia & Mali, Victoria O. Alapo Mar 2022

The Spatial Organization Of Pre-Colonial African Kingdoms: The Empires Of Ethiopia & Mali, Victoria O. Alapo

Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Pre-Colonial kingdoms in Sub-Saharan Africa were many, and were organized in unique ways. The old Empires of Ethiopia and Mali were selected for this research because of their antiquity and for their contrasts: Ethiopia was an official Christian Empire for about two millennia, while Mali was the quintessential Sub-Saharan Islamic kingdom. Also, both empires possessed documentation written by traditional Africans, in the form of ancient indigenous manuscripts, which predate the colonial period (i.e., the coming of Europeans) by several centuries. In addition, the research analyzes work that has been done by historians and other academics, and incorporates the reports of …

Diam's: The Politics Of Autobiography And Avatarhood In The French Republic, Taryn Marcelino Feb 2022

Diam's: The Politics Of Autobiography And Avatarhood In The French Republic, Taryn Marcelino

Journal of Gender, Ethnic, and Cross-Cultural Studies

Diam’s is a French female rapper otherwise known as Mélanie Georgiades who was prominent in France’s music scene from 1999 up until 2010 when she retreated to a small village in the French countryside. Her claim to fame was her anti-racist lyrics but what grabbed the media’s attention was her reappearance in the public sphere wearing a veil. In this article, I trace her career from her lyrics, music videos, and finally to her autobiographies which she published during her retirement from music. By following her work, I analyze the avatars of Diam’s and Mélanie to portray her journey from …

The Architecture And Landscape Of Slavery In Fredericksburg, Virginia, Douglas W. Sanford Feb 2022

The Architecture And Landscape Of Slavery In Fredericksburg, Virginia, Douglas W. Sanford

Northeast Historical Archaeology

The African Americans who endured institutional enslavement played a critical role in the history of Fredericksburg from its 18th-century founding to its Civil War era turmoil. Only recently have historians, archaeologists, and architectural historians brought scholarly and more public attention to bear on the people who comprised over a third of the city’s population as well as its main labor force. Surprisingly little archaeological work on slave-related sites and structures has occurred. This research relies on a combination of architectural and documentary evidence to visualize slavery’s built environment in Fredericksburg as well as the demographic and cultural parameters …

The Planted Catalog: The Role Of The Botanical Garden In Botany, Douglas Tuers Feb 2022

The Planted Catalog: The Role Of The Botanical Garden In Botany, Douglas Tuers

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

This article will investigate the role of the botanical garden in botany. What its role is and how it fills it. This article will take the Missouri Botanical Garden as a case study, drawing heavily from archival material compromised mostly of letters between Henry Shaw and the prominent botanists of his day. This study also draws on the prominent histories of the Missouri Botanical Garden. The analysis use the philosophical tradition around reference in logic and language. This study argues that the botanical garden is a bridge between locality and herbaria. The order of the flora travels to the locality …
