The Settlement And Development Of Wayne County, Utah, To 1900, Aldus Devon Chappell
Theses and Dissertations
Although John C. Fremont had traveled through Wayne County, Utah, in the winter of 1853-54, it was not until 1874 that the first herd of cattle was introduced to Rabbit Valley. Reports soon circulated that here was a new land, conducive to the raising of livestock, and in 1876 about a dozen families entered the valley and began settlement. Families that moved into this area came from various places. Each settler came to make a new life, and came independently of the others. In 1895 the population was nearly 2,000, and by 1970 it had dropped to 1,486.

The Persian And Arabic Destructions Of Caesarea Maritima: The Historical And Stratigraphical Data, Sarah Eleanor Sypher
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This thesis presents the historical and stratigraphical evidence for the Persian and Arabic destructions of Caesarea Maritima. Its main purpose is to discover whether the stratigraphical data coincides with the historical information concerning the city in the sixth and seventh centuries A.D.
The archaeological data are the results of four seasons of excavation (1971, 1972, 1973, 1974) carried out by the Joint Expedition to Caesarea Maritima under the direction of Dr. R.J. Bull, Drew University, Madison, N.J. It is supported by a consortium of twenty-one Colleges, Seminaries, and Universities, including Wilfrid Laurier University, and is sponsored by the Albright Institute …

Na Tse Ke: A Re-Evaluation Of Some Major Trends In United States Apache Policy, 1847-1887, D. C. Cole
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The relationship of the United States Government and the Apache Indians of Arizona and New Mexico was marred by thirty years of war. The thesis, of which this is an abstract, is an investigation into the appropriateness of selected aspects of United States policy toward the Apache in the years 1847-1887. The essential questions in this analysis and re-evaluation of policy are not why and how? did the United States prevail, but rather: Did the authorities understand the nature of the Apache? Did the policies in the area fit that nature? And if not, could the cost have been less …

Carl Bodmer: A Biographical Sketch, Hans Läng
Carl Bodmer: A Biographical Sketch, Hans Läng
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
Almost every illustrated work on North American Indians has pictures by Carl Bodmer, the gifted Swiss painter. Experts as well as interested laymen are impressed by his excellent portrayals of various types of Indians and their world. When we look for the artist's signature, however, we often find nothing but "after Wied" under the picture or else the name of an engraver. Thieme-Becker, Benezit, Nagel, and any number of other editors of the various encyclopedias of artists, refer to Carl Brun (Schwizerisches Kunstler-Lexikon, Frauenfeld 1905), whenever they mention Bodmer. And here, too, we find precious little information about the painter.

Irish Families In Portland, Oregon, 1850-1880: An Immigrant Culture In The Far West, Michael Kazin
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis is an attempt to begin an examination of the social history of immigrant families in the cities of the West Coast. I chose to study Irish families in particular because they were the first group of migrants to come in large numbers to the United States from a primarily peasant culture, and because studies of Irish in the cities of the East have emphasized their resistance to assimilation into the dominant Anglicized Protestant society.

The Beeson Farmstead: A Study Of The Functional Aspects Of A Black Farm In The Richland Community, Annelen Archbold
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This study documents the lifestyle on a small, prosperous black farmstead in the Richland community of Butler County, Kentucky. It is based on extensive fieldwork and interviews conducted with Percy Beeson, owner of the farm for aver fifty years. The result of the fieldwork and interviews was the documentation of how this farmstead, maintained without mechanical farm equipment, worked as a functional unit on a year-round basis.
As a functional unit, the Beeson farmstead is described in terms of the Beeson family and their ownership of the farm and the breakdown of the property into two dependent units. In the …

Chicanos In Oregon: An Historical Overview, Richard Wayne Slatta
Dissertations and Theses
Spaniards were the first Europeans to explore the Pacific Northwest coastline, but the only evidence of these early visits is a sprinkling of Spanish place names commemorating the intrepid voyagers. The more than four centuries of recorded history since that time are nearly devoid, of references to Spanish-speaking people, especially Mexicans and Americans of Mexican descent (Chicanos). Even the heavy influx of Chicano migrant farm workers in the 1950's and 1960's failed to attract the attention of historians or social science researchers. By 1970, the Spanish-language population had become Oregon's largest ethnic minority and was exerting influence in most areas …

Test Excavations Along F. M. 765, Mcculloch County, Texas, Ann M. Irwin
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Four archaeological sites in McCulloch County, Texas will be affected by the construction of a fifteen mile section of F.M. 765 from Fife, Texas to its intersection with U.S. 377 north of Mercury, Texas (Figure 1). These four sites were discovered in April 1973, by Dayrnond Crawford of the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation during a routine archaeological reconnaissance of the proposed right-of-way. Two sites, 41MK10 and 41MK27, are located along the banks of Bluff Creek, some four and one-half kilometers upstream from its confluence with the Colorado River. Bluff Creek makes two large meanders between the sites …

An Archaeological Survey Of Portions Of The Chiltipin-San Fernado Creeks Watershed, Jim Wells County, Texas, Thomas R. Hester, Feris A. Bass, Jr.
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
In accordance with an agreement (Purchase Order No. 427-TX-SCS-75) between the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service and the Center for Archaeological Research at The University of Texas at San Antonio, an archaeological survey was carried out in a potion of the Chiltipin-San Fernando Creeks Watershed in Jim Wells County, Texas. (see Fig. 1). The specific area examined during the survey was the proposed site for Floodwater Retarding Structure No. 5 (Revised), encompassing 320 hectares (790 acres) and extending for approximately 3 km along the course of the Chiltipin Creek (Fig. 1).

Archaeological Survey Of Areas Proposed For Modification In The Salado Creek Watershed, Bexar County, Texas, Thomas R. Hester
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
In late October, 1974, the Center for Archaeological Research of the University of Texas at San Antonio carried out an archaeological survey of the upper Salado Creek Watershed. Localities slated for the construction of 10 Soil Conservation Service floodwater retarding structures were examined, and 29 prehistoric and historic archaeological sites were found. These cultural resources are described and evaluated. Recommendations are provided for the mitigation of adverse effects on certain of these resources.
