To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
Given the backdrop of multiple concurring crises—a global pandemic, political instability and violence, and multiple structural inequalities—we see the problem of now as this: How do educational developers continue to address the wicked problems in teaching and learning when we are simply so exhausted? Our article presents the importance of communities of practice for educational developers, inviting us to witness and name the communities in which we belong; the important functions they engage; who they nurture and how; and what care is undertaken to sustain these groups and ourselves. Perceived Barriers To Learning Process Of Rural-Based Female Students At The Open University Of Tanzania, Lulu Simon Mahai
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This paper explores the perceived barriers to learning among rural-based female students studying through open and distance learning (ODL) mode in Tanzania. Specifically, it seeks to determine the perceived barriers hindering rural-based female students from active learning. A qualitative research approach informed the study using a single case study research design. Purposive and convenience sampling procedures were used to obtain 20 participants. Data was generated through semi-structured interviews, non-participant observations, and documentary reviews; and was analysed thematically. Findings show that female students in rural locations experience institutional, dispositional and situational barriers, which challenge their learning process. Moreover, the low level …

Feedback Preferences Of University Student-Teachers From Supervisors And Their Rationale In Teaching Practicum, Innocent B. Rugambuka, Josta L. Nzilano
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This study examines the feedback preferences of university student-teachers (STs) from supervisors and the rationale for the preferences during teaching practicum (TP). It involved second-year STs (N = 109) of a government-owned university in Tanzania. The study sought to achieve two objectives: (i) explore the type of feedback preferred by STs from their supervisors during TP; and (ii) elicit the reasons for the feedback preferences during TP. Interviews and focused group discussions were used for data collection. The findings indicated that STs mostly prefer written (59%) over oral (38%) and blended (3%) types of feedback. From “Spring Break” To “Reading Days”: Contingency, Relations Of Power, And Positionalities In Experiences Of Overwork During Academic Breaks, Kelli R. Lycke Martin, Ann Shivers-Mcnair
Academic Labor: Research and Artistry (2017-2022 archives)
In this article, the authors analyze the impacts of their university eliminating Spring Break and replacing it with intermittent Reading Days during the Covid-19 pandemic. With particular attention to contingency, relations of power, and positionalities, they offer narratives of their lived experiences with Reading Days as a graduate student (Author 1) and as a pre-tenure faculty member (Author 2). They also offer analysis of the public conversations surrounding the institutional decision. There are different methods in learning languages. English language through self-development is the most important direction for modernization of an educational system. The quantitative study was an ex-post-facto study design to explore specific factors and their magnitude that predicts the successful matriculation toward and achievement of a bachelor’s degree by Black students enrolled at a PWI in the deep South. The researcher pursued to explore the direction and magnitude that fall into the following three categories on several measures the matriculation progress toward and deficit of a bachelor’s degree: student demographics characteristics, socio-economic background and economic status, and pre-and post-admission academic readiness and performance. To explore the effect of volunteering on philanthropic giving to U.S. higher education, the study considered the giving rates of first-time alumni participants in an alumni-student career mentor program as measured over three periods: the year prior to their first year as a mentor, their first year as a mentor, and the year following their first year as a mentor. Using a repeated measure ANOVA statistical method, the study sought to determine if there is a statistically significant variance in the giving rates of these volunteers across the three measures. This work is of a research nature. The author set herself the goal of analyzing the original text of the novel by Charles Dickens for the purpose of studying the author's techniques for the embodiment of irony and sarcasm in this work. The author expresses the assumption (hypothesis) that the mechanisms of transmission of irony in the novel are much more diverse than the dictionary interpretation of the trope "irony" suggests, and aims to show that this circumstance enhances the emotional impact on the reader of the book. This article analyzes ethno-demographic data, their study and, in turn, is based on population censuses. Historical aspects of ethno-demographic data in population censuses are presented.
