Evaluating Experiential Learning In Undergraduate Agricultural Education: A Content Analysis Of Course Syllabi From A College Of Agriculture, Tyler Newberry

Theses and Dissertations--Community & Leadership Development

This study evaluated the presence and depth of experiential learning within undergraduate course syllabi from the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment. Through a content analysis of 41 syllabi across five academic majors, the study examined how course objectives and assignments aligned with Kolb’s Experiential learning cycle (1984), Webb’s depth of knowledge (1997), and Joplin’s Mini to maxi Scale (1981). A structured coding instrument was used to quantify the frequency of learning elements across these three frameworks. The findings revealed that Abstract Conceptualization and Reflective Observation were the most common stages in both objectives and assignments, while Concrete Experience …

Academic Preparedness And Institutional Support For Low-Income Students: A Scoping Review Of College Success And Retention, Davina Wilson Jan 2025

Academic Preparedness And Institutional Support For Low-Income Students: A Scoping Review Of College Success And Retention, Davina Wilson

Social Work Theses - Archive

Students from lower-funded high schools often enter college with lower levels of academic preparedness and limited access to advanced coursework, individualized advising, and extracurricular opportunities, all of which contribute to disparities in retention and academic success. These inequities, rooted in longstanding school funding gaps and systemic barriers, disproportionately affect first-generation and racially minoritized students, who may also experience cultural mismatch or isolation within college environments. This scoping review synthesizes existing research conducted by other scholars to examine how academic preparedness and institutional support services such as tutoring, mentoring, bridge programs, and college transition initiatives influence college readiness for students from …

More Than Money: Holistic Outcomes Of Catholic Higher Education, Jason King Jan 2025

More Than Money: Holistic Outcomes Of Catholic Higher Education, Jason King

Journal of Catholic Education

In an era dominated by financial metrics and return-on-investment rhetoric, this study offers a counternarrative by examining the holistic outcomes of Catholic higher education. Drawing on a nationally representative survey of 2,000 college graduates, it compares alumni of Catholic and secular institutions across three domains: life satisfaction and personal fulfillment; civic engagement and community involvement; and ethical development. The findings reveal that graduates of Catholic colleges report higher life satisfaction, greater civic participation, and a stronger ethical orientation than their secular peers—patterns that persist across demographic subgroups. While Catholic colleges perform well on traditional financial indicators, their distinctive value lies …

Beyond The Annual Review: How Feedback Environments Shape Student Affairs And Student Service Employees’ Feedback Receptivity, Lauren Zahour

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

Student Affairs and Student Service (SASS) professionals play a central role in student success outcomes and have direct organizational impact in higher education settings. As in other types of workplaces such as corporations, supervision and feedback are key elements of growth and development for SASS professionals. There is minimal research addressing how the supervisor feedback environment is connected to SASS employees’ feedback orientation, highlighting a need to explore these relationships to enhance supervision practices, feedback self-efficacy, and institutional effectiveness. The purpose of this quantitative study was to analyze the potential relationships between SASS employees’ perceived feedback environment and their own …

“I’M Doing Good For Her”: Stories Examining The Employment Experiences Of Undergraduate Students With Pell-Eligibility, Jennifer Ruggiero-Patel

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

Students of low socioeconomic status are a growing demographic in higher education, in part because of historical advances which provided more access to this population. To afford their education, as well as necessities, students of low socioeconomic status usually need to work while earning their degree. Higher education institutions are often not structured to support students of low socioeconomic status (Lee, 2024). The purpose of this qualitative, narrative inquiry was to examine the stories of employed undergraduate students of low socioeconomic status, while also studying their motivation for working while in college. The data for this study was collected through …

Public Values Of Higher Education, Kelly M. French Jan 2025

Public Values Of Higher Education, Kelly M. French

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

Higher education has demonstrable value for individuals and our collective society. The primary outcomes of higher education have been focused on supporting democracy, preparing an educated workforce, and ensuring economic success. Policy makers, higher education advocates, and the public have debated the role of higher education as both a public and private good. This study applied a public values framework to higher education to ensure the goals and expectations for universities remain focused on the collective good. The purpose of the study was to identify and define the public values of higher education through a case study approach that combines …

Uncertain Futures, Unfinished Journeys: The Complex Realities Of Belonging Among International College Women Of Color In The U.S., Matheeha Majeeth

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

This study explored the complex and personal lived experiences of International College Women of Color (ICWOC) as they navigated the complexities of developing of a sense of belonging within their U.S. higher education institution (HEI). Guided by Kimberlé Crenshaw’s theory of Intersectionality (1991,1989) and Strayhorn’s College Student Sense of Belonging theory (2012), this research study used an interpretive phenomenological approach to explore how racism, ethnocentrism and misogyny shaped the ICWOC participants’ academic and social journeys in their U.S. HEIs. Through individual, semi-structured interviews with the participants, this study revealed that belonging was not simply about institutional access or inclusion. It …

Are We Expert Enough? Confronting Self-Doubt Through Critical Friendship, Kristen Gregory, Mark Diacopoulos Jan 2025

Are We Expert Enough? Confronting Self-Doubt Through Critical Friendship, Kristen Gregory, Mark Diacopoulos

Faculty Submissions

As we transitioned to the dissertation stage, we experienced an increased sense of vulnerability, uncertainty, and tension where we simultaneously felt expert and novice in our development as teacher-educators and researchers. We embarked on a self-study with critical friendship and unpacked our understanding of novice-expert identity, placed ourselves within the context of this understanding, and reframed our perceptions. This process clarified how our self-doubt impacted our novice-expert identity, allowed us to critique our perceptions through another’s lens, and enabled us to successfully move forward. We offer our experiences as a model to support students through similar periods of self-doubt.

Personification: A Short Film, Charles R. Adams Jan 2025

Personification: A Short Film, Charles R. Adams

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

Personification follows a group of college students as they receive news that mysterious shape-shifting creatures are posing as humans. They quickly turn on each other, realizing there is no one they can trust. In the style of mid-20th - century horror films, notably Don Siegel’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), the short film explores themes of paranoia and the value of human expression in a time when generative AI seeks to replace the creative method. In keeping with this theme, the emphasis for this project was on the act of creation. Pre-production—which included scriptwriting, casting, and various organizational tasks—ran …

Neurodivergent Students And Higher Education: Barriers, Challenges, And Supporting Measures, Courtney Tricarichi-Funk

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

When neurodivergent students attempt to go to colleges and universities, they often face barriers in accessing higher education and encounter challenges post-admission. This study explores what measures higher learning institutions can develop and implement to make postsecondary education more accessible and less challenging for neurodivergent students by answering the following questions: • What barriers do neurodivergent students face when planning to access higher education? • What challenges do neurodivergent students encounter in higher education after they are admitted? • What measures can be developed and implemented to help neurodivergent students access and succeed in higher education? To address these questions, …
