Analysis Of Psychoactive Compounds In The Web-Building Behavior Of Mangora Maculata, Diane R. Castner
Analysis Of Psychoactive Compounds In The Web-Building Behavior Of Mangora Maculata, Diane R. Castner
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
The arachnid central nervous system (CNS) functions in an analogous way to the human CNS, despite spiders not having a central brain. Previous studies on spider behavior and web formation have investigated the impacts of stimulants, depressants, sedatives, and hallucinogens, but the impacts of serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), such as fluoxetine are unknown. This study examined the impacts of caffeine, nicotine, ethanol, and fluoxetine on the web building behavior of Mangora maculata. Webs were characterized by 9 metrics: web entirety, size of web, radial angles, cell length, number of large holes, frequency of forking of spiral threads, radial angle consistency, …

Thinking Outside The Survey Box: Using Qualitative Tools To Gather Feedback From Unique Library User Groups, Marla Hertz
Thinking Outside The Survey Box: Using Qualitative Tools To Gather Feedback From Unique Library User Groups, Marla Hertz
Libraries Professional Work
Libraries often employ surveys to collect information about their users. However, studies have shown that surveys are less effective for targeting smaller populations. In contrast, qualitative approaches are well suited to capture the diversity of experience among small communities. The task of conducting and analyzing interviews can be daunting, as it not as straightforward as surveys. This presentation will review how qualitative research can be achieved using simple coding tools and adopting key project management practices.
My aim is to demystify focus group methodology by drawing from a recent study I conducted on postdoctoral fellows on how they engage with …

Trauma-Informed Gatekeeping In Counselor Education And Supervision: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Leslie E. Davis
Trauma-Informed Gatekeeping In Counselor Education And Supervision: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Leslie E. Davis
Dissertations
Gatekeeping is a challenging ethical and legal obligation for counselor educators and supervisors. Many counseling students demonstrate some sort of problem of professional competence in their counseling programs, and it is critical that counselor educators utilize gatekeeping practices to prevent gateslipping (Brown-Rice & Furr, 2016a; Gaubatz & Vera, 2002; Kimball et al, 2019). According to The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA, 2023), there is an increasing need to address trauma as a critical element of providing effective mental health services. Trauma-informed care and trauma-informed principles began to appear in the mental health literature in 2001, and the …

From Rhetoric To Reality: The U.S. Republican Party's Shifting Stance On Immigration, Greyson Thagard
From Rhetoric To Reality: The U.S. Republican Party's Shifting Stance On Immigration, Greyson Thagard
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
The Republican Party has experienced a well-documented ideological shift towards the right in the 21st century. However, significant attention has not been granted to the causes and consequences of this shift on rhetoric surrounding immigration. As immigration has become a polarizing topic in recent years, it is important to understand how the Republican Party has transformed regarding the issue. It is also important to understand what contributed to this shift. In this paper, I analyzed Republican Party platforms from 2008 to 2024 as well as selected speeches from prominent Party members at the Republican National Convention from 2008 to 2024. …

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
This dissertation examines the secondary-to-postsecondary transition experiences of autistic youth and develops The Sparacio Transition Guide, a comprehensive, research-informed tool designed to improve college and career outcomes for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
Framed by ecological systems theory, the social model of disability, Universal Design for Learning, and person-centered planning, the study investigates strategies, supports, and program components that promote successful movement from high school to higher education and employment. Using a qualitative phenomenological design, the researcher conducted in-depth, semi-structured Zoom interviews with eight accomplished autistic adults who completed postsecondary education and achieved career success, then employed thematic analysis, …

Ai In Academia: Supportive Ally Or Cheating Accomplice?, Ian Offner
INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference
- The purpose of this study was to investigate student attitudes toward the use of AI for college class work in a variety of domains.
- For some situations, the use of the AI was collaborative. The students would have to utilize their own abilities in conjunction with the AI as a co-intelligence. For some situations, the AI was a dominant agent, requiring little input from the students.

Short-Term Study Abroad Programs: A Sustainable Model For Community Colleges, Jorge Grajales-Díaz
Inquiry: The Journal of the Virginia Community Colleges
This study employed qualitative methods to explore how the UVA in Valencia Summer Program 2019/ 2021 approached instructional practices (e.g., in-class and out-of-class immersive learning activities, homestays, pre-program services, including use of L2 and culture learning strategies) to identify those features of the program design that Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) could reproduce in a new short-term study abroad designed to expand its students’ oral proficiency and cultural awareness. The study used data from Zoom interviews with faculty, administrators, and L2 participating students. The findings address the study’s purpose in describing how the UVA in Valencia Summer Program 2019/ 2021 …

Inquiry: The Journal of the Virginia Community Colleges
The country, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and Virginia Community College System initiatives all promote generative AI within education. It is a topic of great concern and interest for higher education instructors, yet at the same time many faculty members feel uncertain about effectively integrating it into class material. To further add pressure to the AI explosion, community colleges particularly face a responsibility to prepare their students for success in this new AI-focused environment. In this article, seven faculty members from Camp Community College discuss the implications of generative AI programs, including subscriptions and chatbots, within their particular courses and how …
Uncovering The Treasure Of Self-Directed Learning, W Alex Foxworthy, William "Bill" Mccarter
Uncovering The Treasure Of Self-Directed Learning, W Alex Foxworthy, William "Bill" Mccarter
Inquiry: The Journal of the Virginia Community Colleges
Self-directed learning enables students to take charge of their educational journey by selecting their own paths, thereby fostering intrinsic motivation. Traditional educational models often rely on extrinsic motivators like grades and rewards, whereas self-directed approaches emphasize personal satisfaction and curiosity. Review of existing research highlights how extrinsic rewards can undermine intrinsic motivation, leading to decreased academic performance and well-being. Herein we also present practical examples from classroom settings, demonstrating how real-world applications and student-led investigations can enhance engagement and learning outcomes. Additionally, we address the role of digital platforms in facilitating self-directed learning while noting the challenges of information reliability. …
