Collegiate Music Recruiting: Using Athletic Recruiting Best Practices To Transform The Industry, Larry Jay Giddens Jr.
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The recruitment of new students is vital to every music program and can have a tremendous impact on its success. As technology evolves and the needs of the world change, so do the methods of student recruitment and retention in music departments, music schools, and colleges of music. This study covers the perspectives of collegiate music unit recruiters and compares current and potential strategies. Using a mixed methods approach, this research employs surveys to identify current music unit recruiting trends and challenges. Online recruiting, scholarship availability and facilities/staff emerge as themes within the small body of existing literature and personal …

Gender Differences In Regretted Consensual Sexual Experiences And Problematic Alcohol Use Among First-Year College Students, Shannon Shen, Soyoung Kwon, Sukho Lee
Gender Differences In Regretted Consensual Sexual Experiences And Problematic Alcohol Use Among First-Year College Students, Shannon Shen, Soyoung Kwon, Sukho Lee
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Regretted sexual behaviors and alcohol use often occur in tandem for college students; however, few studies have examined their interrelationships or the variance across gender. This study tested gender differences in how regretting a consensual sexual experience is related to college students’ alcohol use. One hundred and forty first-year students (63% women, 69% Hispanic) surveyed in 2018 and 2019 reported their sexual behavior and alcohol use (following the Rutgers Alcohol Problem Index [RAPI]). Twenty-one percent of men and 16% of women reported a regretted sexual encounter. Interaction effects from regression models revealed that men with sexual regret had a significantly …

The Journal of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) contain valuable knowledge that can be useful in a wide range of research areas. Accordingly, we are building electronic infrastructure leveraging advanced work on digital libraries, for discovering and accessing the knowledge buried in ETDs. In this paper we focus on our work to incorporate topic modeling into digital libraries for ETDs. We present ETD-Topics, a framework that extracts topics from a large text corpus in an unsupervised way. The representations learned from topic models can be useful for downstream tasks such as searching and/or browsing documents by topic, document recommendation, topic recommendation, and describing …

Chemistry Department Faculty Conferences
CUREs are a great way to engage students in research practices but can be onerous for instructors and teaching assistants to administrate and facilitate. There is added challenge in providing research experiences to students at the introductory level when they have developed limited knowledge and skills. Here we describe a more structured approach that applies the learning cycle to a traditional experiment to allow students to explore the technique, “invent” the parameters for systematic analysis, and apply the technique to a researchable question of their own construction.

ABSTRACT
Background: This report shares a best practice approach to low-fidelity simulation as a pedagogical method in disaster triage training for undergraduate nursing students.
Methods: This study utilized multi-year quantitative data such as student age, gender, GPA, prior simulation experience, and self-reported confidence in the START Triage application. It also utilized a secondary qualitative analysis of the debriefing process.
Results: Students who participated in a simulation event playing the role of a disaster victim scored significantly higher on subsequent performance as TRIAGE practitioners than students without roleplay experience. Perhaps even more compelling, these learning outcomes were demonstrated 18 months after …
