Course-based research experiences (CREs) are powerful strategies for spreading learning and improving persistence for all students, both science majors and nonscience majors. Here we address the crucial components of CREs (context, discovery, ownership, iteration, communication, presentation) found across a broad range of such courses at a variety of academic institutions. We also address how the design of a CRE should vary according to the background of student participants; no single CRE format is perfect. We provide a framework for implementing CREs across multiple institutional types and several disciplines throughout the typical four years of undergraduate work, designed to a variety …

Service-Learning At Dominican: Education In Action, Julia Van Der Ryn Jan 2016

Service-Learning At Dominican: Education In Action, Julia Van Der Ryn

Collected Faculty Scholarship

What is Service-Learning at Dominican?

Service-Learning (SL) puts education into action by engaging with the community and experiencing the relevance of coursework first-hand. SL expands the classroom into the local community, providing the opportunity to apply classroom content to work with local community organizations and schools, learning about the lives of others, developing awareness, enhancing one’s understanding of how we can contribute to social justice issues that ultimately impact us all.

Through SL, students develop practical, transferable skills, explore career and personal interests, and expand their networks and sense of self while connecting with other students, faculty, and community mentors.

Logistics Of Mathematical Modeling-Focused Projects, R. Corban Harwood Jan 2016

Logistics Of Mathematical Modeling-Focused Projects, R. Corban Harwood

Faculty Publications - Department of Mathematics

Projects provide tangible connections to course content and can motivate students to learn at a deeper level. This article focuses on the implementation of projects in both lower and upper division math courses which develop and analyze mathematical models of a problem based upon known data and real-life situations. Logistical pitfalls and insights are highlighted as well as several key implementation resources. Student feedback demonstrate a positive correlation between the use of projects and an enhanced understanding of the course topics when the impact of logistics is reduced. Best practices learned over the years are given along with example project …

How First Generation Students Acclimate To The College Campus, Emani Richmond Jan 2016

How First Generation Students Acclimate To The College Campus, Emani Richmond

Communication Studies Student Scholarship

This population of first-generation students is ripe for study because of their growing prominence on college campuses across the nation. The existing literature on FGS takes a more specific approach through looking at individual measures that are taken to support FGS such as the role of “academic self-concept,” how FGS negotiate the multiple identities they represent while in college, and how to retain students from low-income backgrounds (DeFreitas & Rinn, 2013; Orbe, 2004; Thayer, 2000). These studies are valuable because they bring information to the people that support FGS in assisting support staff with the understanding of their unique hurdles …

A Study Of The Fepac Accredited Graduate Forensic Science Programs' Curricula, Catherine Genice Rushton Jan 2016

A Study Of The Fepac Accredited Graduate Forensic Science Programs' Curricula, Catherine Genice Rushton

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The National Institute of Justice (1999) and the National Academy of Sciences (2009) recommended that forensic science training shift from on-the-job training to formal education. However, the reports cited inconsistencies in the curricula of the forensic science degree programs as an impediment to this. The Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission (FEPAC) Standards were created to address this issue; however, no studies have been conducted to determine how the accreditation standards have been implemented by the FEPAC accredited graduate programs. This study evaluated the self-study responses (n=11) and website information (n=17) specific to FEPAC’s Graduate Curriculum Standards to determine how …

Against The Odds: A Study Of Low Socioeconomic Status Students’ Enrollment In Higher Education, Andrea T. Kirby Jan 2016

Against The Odds: A Study Of Low Socioeconomic Status Students’ Enrollment In Higher Education, Andrea T. Kirby

Theses and Dissertations--Community & Leadership Development

For generations, researchers have been examining attributes that make low socioeconomic status students resilient. Attributes that help one become resilient are known as protective factors. The purpose of this study was to describe the protective factor(s) that contributed to the first-generation, low socioeconomic status students’ enrollment at The University of Kentucky. The population for this study consists of the University of Kentucky First Scholars participants during the 2015 – 2016 academic year. The researcher examines the existing literature on low socioeconomic status effects on post-secondary education. Recommendations were made for the University of Kentucky’s First Scholars Program on how to …

Impact Of The Siena College Tech Valley Scholars Program On Student Outcomes, Larry Medsker, Lee Allard, Lucas J. Tucker, Jodi L. O’Donnell, Rachel Sterne-Marr, Jon Bannon, Rose Finn, Allan T. Weatherwax

Physics Faculty Publications

The experimental group for this study included 38 students who entered the Tech Valley Scholars (TVS) program over the course of three academic years, from 2009-10 through 2011-12. Two groups of controls were used: a randomly selected sample of STEM students who matriculated in the same time frame; and a matched sample. The TVS students and controls were compared on two primary outcome variables: graduation (or retention to senior year), and final cumulative GPA. The major findings of this study are that (1) the TVS students had better outcomes than both the randomly selected comparison group and the matched control …

How Gender Differences Shape Student Success In Honors, Susan E. Dinan Jan 2016

How Gender Differences Shape Student Success In Honors, Susan E. Dinan

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

In 2014, Jonathan Zimmerman published an op-ed in the Christian Science Monitor in which he wrote, “The last time I checked, [men] held most of the important positions of power and influence in American society. And yet, college admissions offices lower the standard for young men—effectively raising it for women—simply to make sure that the men keep coming.” This comment was not surprising as, seven years earlier, the U.S. News & World Report had published “Many Colleges Reject Women at Higher Rates Than For Men,” in which Alex Kingsbury memorably asserted:

Using undergraduate admissions rate data collected from more than …

Toward A Science Of Honors Education, Beata M. Jones Jan 2016

Toward A Science Of Honors Education, Beata M. Jones

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

As Sam Schuman wrote in 2004 and as George Mariz points out in his lead essay for this issue of JNCHC, the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC) and academics alike have long recognized the importance of research in honors. Cambridge Dictionary Online defines “research” as “a detailed study of a subject in order to discover information or achieve a new understanding of it.” Given the roots of U.S. honors in the liberal arts, U.S. practitioners who have written for JNCHC have often been driven by the research models of their home disciplines. With fifteen years’ worth of publications, JNCHC contains …
