A Twenty-Year Look At “Computational Geology,” An Evolving, In-Discipline Course In Quantitative Literacy At The University Of South Florida, Victor J. Ricchezza, H. L. Vacher
Numeracy
Since 1996, the Geology (GLY) program at the USF has offered “Computational Geology” as part of its commitment to prepare undergraduate majors for the quantitative aspects of their field. The course focuses on geological-mathematical problem solving. Over its twenty years, the course has evolved from a GATC (geometry-algebra-trigonometry-calculus) in-discipline capstone to a quantitative literacy (QL) course taught within a natural science major. With the formation of the new School of Geosciences in 2013, the merging departments re-examined their various curricular programs. An online survey of the Geology Alumni Society found that “express quantitative evidence in support of an argument” was …

Bridges was a first generation college student and recalls the effect that being a student-athlete from a small farm town had on him. Throughout this narrative he reflects on the people and programs that had an impact on his success as a student and on lettering in three sports. After graduation, Bridges started as a basketball and tennis coach; he served IWU as Athletic Director from 1982-2015.

Service Learning As Inquiry In An Undergraduate Science Course, Kelsie M. Bernot, Amy E. Kulesza, Judith S. Ridgway
Faculty Publications
To engage students in applying scientific process skills to real-world issues, we implemented a service-learning project model in our undergraduate introductory biology course for science majors. This model illustrates how we integrate inquiry inside and outside of the classroom through four steps: service, learning, classroom, and community. Out-of-class activities engaged students in serving the community (Service step) while deepening their learning experience beyond what they would learn in a classroom (Learning step). To connect the service-learning project with scientific process skills, students were asked to identify problems that our community partners were trying to solve, identify proposed solutions, and design …

The Feasibility Of Implementing Early College Instructional Strategies And Design Principles In Traditional High Schools As A Reform Model, Shelia Smith Wyont
The Feasibility Of Implementing Early College Instructional Strategies And Design Principles In Traditional High Schools As A Reform Model, Shelia Smith Wyont
Education Dissertations and Projects
Early college high schools were developed as a partnership between school districts and colleges to provide students an opportunity to earn a high school diploma concurrently with an associate’s degree or transferable college credit at little or no cost. In 2011, North Carolina New Schools implemented the Rural Innovative Initiative with the purpose of expanding college readiness and reducing dropouts by applying early college design principles and strategies into 18 existing traditional high schools in low-wealth districts. The purpose of this study was to examine the feasibility of implementation of early college principles and strategies into traditional high schools. The …

Inseparable Faith: Exploring Manifestations And Experiences Of Faith-Work Integration In Young Alumni From A Christian University, Emilie Hoffman
Inseparable Faith: Exploring Manifestations And Experiences Of Faith-Work Integration In Young Alumni From A Christian University, Emilie Hoffman
Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses
The integration of faith and work refers to the manner in which individuals reconcile meaning sets and worldviews with their work. In the two most recent decades, discussion on the involvement of religion, faith, and spirituality in the workplace has increased in popularity in the United States (Hammond, Stevens, & Svanoe, 2002; Hillman, 2005; Kidwell, 2014). While recent studies describe the characteristics of an individual’s integration of faith and work and influences on the same, research measuring the extent or trends of integration is lacking. Further, studies predominately focus on the impact of congregation, religious attendance, or workplaces on faith-work …

The Quiet Call: A Grounded Theory Exploration Of Vocational Development And Introversion In College Students, Alex T. Crist
Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses
Vocational development is the process of understanding one’s calling through various internal and external influences. While vocation is an increasingly popular research topic, research has not addressed how one’s personality shapes his or her vocational development. Therefore, the purpose of the research was to explore the vocational development of introverted college students. Using a two-part qualitative study, 101 participants provided online essays, and 9 participants participated in face-to-face interviews in order to understand the influences and process of introverts seeking to discover their vocation. Results suggested various external and internal influences of vocational development, as well as the perceived relationship …

Benefits And Level Of Satisfaction A First-Year Orientation Program Delivers For Freshmen In College, Katie Evensen
Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses
Freshmen beginning their undergraduate education enter with various backgrounds and understanding of what college expectations will be. Institutions must properly ease first-year students into this new transition in their life. One way to help a first-year student transitioning into college is with a first-year orientation program. First-year orientation programs provide unique space for students to adjust well to their institution. Orientation provides time prior to the academic year beginning to allow first-year students to meet their peers, better understand the transition into college, become familiar with campus, feel comfortable with interacting with faculty, staff and administration, and learn more about …
"It Feels A Bit Like Imposter Syndrome": Examining The Issue Of Masculinity And Depression In Male College Students, Wil Story
Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine how male students navigate depression and masculinity while at their respective institutions. The study explored the topic through analyzing quantitative survey data from the studied university, in addition to hearing male students’ experience with depression and masculinity and considering university counselors’ expert opinions about patterns they observe in male students. The study was guided by the following research questions:
- Does depression influence how one perceives his own masculinity?
- Does an individual’s view of masculinity influence their willingness to seek professional help for depression?
Major findings surrounding depression and masculinity include depression’s affects …

Executives, Administrators, & Staff Publications
Researchers have documented how race and racism influence the college experiences of U.S. citizens. However, research on the ways that race and racism affect international students warrants similar attention. This qualitative study explored how international students learned about U.S. concepts of race and racism and how such concepts shaped their college experiences. The participating international college students learned about U.S. concepts of race and racism through media, relationships, formal education, and lived experiences. They defined these concepts in varying ways and had varying racial ideologies.

Arts And Humanities Research, Redefining Public Benefit, And Research Prioritization In Ireland, Andrew Gibson, Ellen Hazelkorn
Arts And Humanities Research, Redefining Public Benefit, And Research Prioritization In Ireland, Andrew Gibson, Ellen Hazelkorn
Articles
This article looks at the effects of a national policy of research prioritization in the years following Ireland’s economic crisis. A national research prioritization exercise initiated by policymakers redefined the purpose of higher education research, and designed policies in line with this approach. Placing research for enterprise to the fore, it emphasized the economic value that subjects could return on state investments. This article examines the post-crisis policy of prioritization, its relationship with and effects on arts and humanities research, and how the notion of the benefit of research can be broadened while still addressing economic needs. It draws on …
