New and Dangerous Ideas

There are numerous ways to combat institutionalized oppression, such as racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and violence. One way just so happens to be through the art. This piece explores identity groups who are discriminated against every day, which President Trump has only emphasized through his actions and words. It questions why the history of our country has divided people by the color of their skin, why powerful men can say what they please about the female body, why heterosexuality is the only sexual orientation, why people should fall on either side of a gender binary, and why violence has continually …

Understanding The Relationship Between Study Abroad And Integrity Development, Lauren Drogo May 2018

Understanding The Relationship Between Study Abroad And Integrity Development, Lauren Drogo

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

This study explored the relationship between study abroad and integrity development. Past research has indicated that a participant’s experience studying abroad impacts their values, personal and global awareness, and ways of developing as a person. While research looking specifically at the development of integrity through study abroad has yet to be explored, current research surrounding integrity holds similar themes aligning with the developmental outcomes of study abroad. Using the Integrity Scale developed by Schlenker, Miller, and Johnson (2009), 419 students were surveyed at a small, private, religiously affiliated institution in the Midwest region of the United States. Using both independent …

Do Pop Quizzes Have A Positive Effect On Exam Grades?, Victoria V. Frisch

Masters Theses/Capstone Projects

A quasi-experimental study was conducted over a seven week period between two sections of a level two American Sign Language class to determine if pop quizzes better prepared students for their midterm exams than announced quizzes would. Data collected were four quiz scores and midterm grades. Analysis conducted consisted of calculating the mean of each assessment, and running a series of t tests to compare mean scores between the control group receiving pop quizzes, and the experimental group receiving announced quizzes. The analysis showed no significance between the two groups.

These Relationships Save Lives:The Association Between The Nature Of Relationships And Experience Of Support In The Workplace For The Amber Alert Training And Technical Assistance Program, Kimberly Rutigliano

Education Policy and Leadership Theses and Dissertations

My research looks at organizational behavior as a resource to beleveraged for human learning. Two theoretical constructs guided this research, Team Member Exchange theory (TMX) and Social Network Analysis theory (SNA). The data for this research were derived from a case study of a subpopulation of the AMBER Alert organizationin Mexico. While no results were statistically significant, there was a weak association between the perceived support on the team (TMX) and the perceived strength of dyadic relationships (SNA) based on measures of outbound degree centrality (r>0.3). Graphical SNA analysis provided a more useful observation for a small group (N=14) than …

The Impact Of Mentoring On Life Science Undergraduate Mentors, Kari Nelson May 2018

The Impact Of Mentoring On Life Science Undergraduate Mentors, Kari Nelson

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research

Universities are increasingly encouraging their undergraduates to become mentors to others, yet relatively little research has been done to empirically understand the impact of this work on the mentors themselves. Therefore, the overall goals of this work were: (1) To evaluate the types of studies that have been conducted on the impacts of serving as an undergraduate mentor; (2) To examine the methodological rigor of recent studies and make recommendations for improvement; and (3) To asses if serving as an undergraduate mentor impacted the critical thinking of the mentors, using a valid and reliable instrument, the California Critical Thinking Skills …

The Perceived Mentoring Experiences Of Male And Female Doctoral Students In Sociology, Macsu A. Hill May 2018

The Perceived Mentoring Experiences Of Male And Female Doctoral Students In Sociology, Macsu A. Hill

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Over the years, women have made significant strides in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Nevertheless, women continue to be underrepresented at the graduate and academic career entry levels, and minority women continue to lag behind Whites in navigating the pipeline to an academic career in the STEM disciplines. In sociology for instance, women overall are well represented at the BA level, but experience a steep decline when moving to doctoral education and then into subsequent academic careers. Numerous explanations have been advanced by educators and researchers to explain the dearth of underrepresented minority (URM) female doctoral students. …
