The Resilience And Success Of Adult College Students Who Have Been Impacted By Parental Incarceration, Sandra Joy, Mikenzie Lord, Sunovia Scudder
First-Generation Symposium
Given the increased attention in recent decades to the national crisis of mass incarceration, the children of incarcerated parents have also been receiving increasingly more attention. Researchers have found that the children of those who have been incarcerated, are also paying the price of their parent's sentence. With the odds set against them, there are children who are resilient and have "beat the odds." On Rowan University's campus, there is a student group, Youth Empowerment Program, who have been impacted by parental incarceration at some point in their lives. With the disenfranchisement their parents face, they have also faced challenges …

Reactive Attachment Disorder In Children, Lindy Ruth Rader
Reactive Attachment Disorder In Children, Lindy Ruth Rader
CARE Conference: Vulnerable Children and Viable Communities
Reactive Attachment Disorder as a whole is a disorder that shows itself in young children. It then has the possibility of affecting the rest of the child’s life and the people that surround the child. There are two types of Reactive Attachment Disorder. The first type is the emotionally withdrawn/inhibited type. This can manifest itself in a few different ways, but the main way is through the child lashing out in fear or anger. This is due to the lack of healthy attachments in their lives. The second subtype is the disinhibited type. This also can manifest itself in multiple …

Embracing Interactive Technology To Teach Didactic Year Physician Assistant Students [Conference Proceedings Excerpt], Zilola Khashimova
Physician Assistant Studies | Faculty Conference Presentations
Idea: Integrate adaptive technology into Anatomy curriculum. Need: Physician assistant departments do not have the extensive labs, resources and instruction time to teach anatomy like medical schools. With faster computers and large data storage on the cloud, interactive technology has become quite useful and affordable. Interactive technology is algorithm-based systems that take advantage of advanced mathematical formulas and machine learning concepts to adapt specifically to individual learners. At its core, such systems are intended to identify what a student does and doesn’t understand, identify and provide content that will help the student learn it, assess again, help again, etc., …

Cultural Factors That Influence Domestic Adoption In South Africa, Greta N. Buckenberger
Cultural Factors That Influence Domestic Adoption In South Africa, Greta N. Buckenberger
CARE Conference: Vulnerable Children and Viable Communities
South Africa has a long and rich cultural history and this history has impacted domestic adoption in a myriad of ways. These cultural factors include ancestral beliefs, infertility, family structure, and apartheid, and they all affect adoption policies and how the public perceives adoption. Unfortunately, these factors usually result in negative results for children in kinship care or children waiting to be adopted. Kinship care is the informal, non-governmentally regulated practice of relatives caring for children. South Africa’s cultural factors of ancestral beliefs, infertility, family structure, apartheid, and the AIDS crisis all impact domestic adoption.

Asians Applying For Postsecondary Success: Students, Schools, And Socioeconomic Status, Avery M.D. Davis
Asians Applying For Postsecondary Success: Students, Schools, And Socioeconomic Status, Avery M.D. Davis
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Higher education recruitment rates are rapidly declining as schools are stymied by dynamic demographic shifts and a competitive ecosystem. Despite the constant realities of this challenge for tertiary institutions, the complexities of the interplay for demographics, student motivation, parental influences, and school environments during the postsecondary education application process is often overlooked. This thesis analyses how these four domains impact Asian American students within the Education Longitudinal Study (ELS) in terms of the number of postsecondary schools to which they apply? This study examines a sample (N = 662) of the ELS by employing multivariate regression analysis on the number …

The Impact Of Cs For All On College Placement In Computer Science, Ronald I. Greenberg, Julie Medero, Samuel A. Rebelsky, Frances P. Trees, Dale Reed
Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
With the CS for All movement increasingly gaining traction nationally, students entering colleges and universities are arriving with deeper and broader CS experiences. This in turn can change students' higher education starting point. This panel of CS faculty with expertise in this area will present perspectives and models to describe how higher education choices for placement, credit, and curriculum design affect the efforts to broaden participation in student pathways into computing and related studies.

Exploring Innovative Ways To Incorporate The Association Of College And Research Libraries Framework In Graduate Science Teacher Education Eportfolio Projects, Alison Lehner-Quam, Wesley Pitts
Publications and Research
This article investigates ways in which student voice informed design research into information literacy instruction in a year-long graduate science education ePortfolio culminating project. Library and science education faculty partnered in a two-year project to create communities of secondary science education students, in two cohorts, who used the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education to support their own research and reflections into information literacy. The overarching goal was to improve the course design to help science teachers develop their professional competencies in information literacy to conduct research to support their practice. Examination of students’ responses to research experiences …

The Qualitative Report
From a position of academic activism, we critique the longstanding dominance del production of knowledge that solely implicates fidelity to Eurocentric methodological technologies en qualitative research. Influenced by an Andean decolonial perspective, en Spanglish we problematize métodos of analysis as the dominant research practice, whereby las stories o relatos result en su appropriation, captivity and gentrification, first by researchers’ authorship and later by the publishing industry copyrights. We highlight the racializing and capitalist colonial/modern Eurocentric agenda del current market of knowledge production that displaces to la periphery all knowledge o relatos that do not subscribe to Euro-US American methodological parameters …
