Up Close And Personal With Hugh Edmiston: Engineering Smu Towards Growth And Excellence, Hugh Edmiston

Oral History Collection

So what can a chartered engineer from the United Kingdom tell us about our aspirations to contribute to growth in Asia, as a young university in Singapore? As I found out…plenty. And then some. Meet SMU Senior Vice-President (Administration) Hugh Edmiston, who joined us just as COVID-19 hit our shores (“Little did I know there was a global pandemic on the horizon when I moved!”); and read on to learn more about his multiple roles and responsibilities in SMU as he drives our growth in Asia. This interview was published in the June 2021 edition of SMU CIRCLE.

Identification Of Phosphorus Index Improvements Through Model Comparisons Across Topographic Regions In A Small Agricultural Watershed In Vermont, Amy S. Collick Jun 2021

Identification Of Phosphorus Index Improvements Through Model Comparisons Across Topographic Regions In A Small Agricultural Watershed In Vermont, Amy S. Collick

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Many U.S. states require farmers to evaluate the risk of P loss from farm fields using P site assessment tools, such as the Phosphorus Index (P-Index). The simplicity of the P-Index allows for users with various backgrounds to utilize the tool; however, the P-Index may be limited in its ability to reliably predict P losses across variable farm terrain, for instance where saturation-excess runoff generation dominates. The objective of this study was to identify potential improvements that could be made to the Vermont P-Index (VT P-Index) by comparing VT P-Index predictions of P loss with those of a model that …

Rochelly Rivera Matos grew up speaking Spanish as her primary language in her hometown of Toa Alta, Puerto Rico.

However, language has not been a significant barrier for her at East Tennessee State University Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy. The third-year student pharmacist has immersed herself in student organizations and helped her peers from different cultures and languages adapt to life in East Tennessee.

“My best friends in pharmacy school are from different cultures,” Rivera Matos said. “One is from China, one is from Vietnam, and another friend is Filipino/Mexican. I love that because we learn from different cultures, …

Institutions are adopting business postures and there is an increase in nontraditional leaders in administrative roles. The increase in nontraditional leaders is providing an opportunity for institutions to implement contemporary approaches to leadership. This study identified the predominant changes impacting liberal arts institutions in the Midwest, leadership behaviors contributing to successful change adaptation, and existent …

Connections Between The Enneagram Personality Type Of Christian University Presidents And Provosts With Student Enrollment, Pamela J. Daly Jun 2021

Connections Between The Enneagram Personality Type Of Christian University Presidents And Provosts With Student Enrollment, Pamela J. Daly

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Limited research has examined the relationship between the Enneagram personality styles of faith-based university presidents/provosts and the institution’s student enrollment size. While there are many personality theories, the Enneagram is a sophisticated model that exposes the unconscious predispositions, motivations, anxieties, and behavioral tendencies of nine different personality profiles. Ego development is the evolution of personality constructs that integrate experiences into a personal framework of interpreting self and the world. Ego maturity is demonstrated by understanding self and others with the ability and motivation to maximize individual potential. Mature leaders exhibit wisdom, broad empathy towards self and others, tolerance of differing …

Teaching In A Global Society: Considerations For University-Based Educational Leadership, Penny L. Tenuto

Journal of Global Education and Research

Those who work in university-based programs are in a unique position to positively influence teaching, leading, and learning in the 21st century—whether in traditional face-to-face classrooms or online. To ensure culturally responsive practices, postsecondary faculty and administrators must be proactive about critically reflecting on their own professional praxes related to adult learning. This paper offers a mini-review of concepts derived from the literature for promoting inclusive postsecondary learning communities in a diverse and global society. This conceptually based paper blends current practices with traditional adult learning theories and includes considerations for those who work in university-based programs that prepare educational …

Preparing Historically Underrepresented Trainees For Biomedical Cancer Research Careers At Huntsman Cancer Institute/University Of Utah Health., Ana Maria Lopez, Md, Mph, Macp, José E Rodríguez, Kathryn Browning Hawes, Anna Marsden, Don Ayer, Donna Harp Ziegenfuss, Kola Okuyemi

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers

Given the well-documented inequities in health care outcomes by race, ethnicity, and gender, many health career pipeline programs have focused on supporting the development of a diverse and inclusive workforce. The State of Utah, is vast, but sparsely populated outside the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. More than 96% of our nearly 85,000 square miles is designated rural (<100 people/square mile) or frontier (<7 people/square mile). The Salt Lake City area is home to the Hunsman Cancer Institute, the only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in the region, also noted the limited diversity in the biomedical cancer research workforce. Our primary objective was to increase the number of underrepresented trainees who pursue higher education with the goal of a career in cancer research. PathMaker is a regional, competitive pipeline program that nurtures high school or undergraduate trainees from historically underrepresented backgrounds towards a career in cancer research. Our faculty and staff team collaboratively developed a cohort model curriculum that increased student awareness of research …

Online Learning, Covid-19, And The Future Of The Academy: Implications For Faculty Governance And Collective Bargaining, Anthony Picciano May 2021

Online Learning, Covid-19, And The Future Of The Academy: Implications For Faculty Governance And Collective Bargaining, Anthony Picciano

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

The purpose of this article is to speculate on the future of higher education as online technology, including adaptive learning (also referred to as personalized learning) infused by artificial intelligence software, develops and matures. This is a risky undertaking since predicting the future, and in this case the evolution of technology, is difficult. While many try to predict what will happen and sometimes get it right, predicting when something will happen is far more challenging. Online and blended learning have already advanced within education, but the most significant changes are yet to come. Evolving technologies have the potential to change …

Implications Of Covid-19 On Higher Education (Special Issue), Gary J. Burkholder, Erwin Krauskopf

Higher Learning Research Communications

Students at all levels were impacted by the shift to online learning; in many cases, they and the institutions they attended were not prepared for the complexities associated with remote/distance learning. In this special issue, Implications of COVID-19 on Higher Education, authors of three essays and five empirical studies have described the various ways the shift to remote learning has impacted students, faculties, and the institutions of higher education in different regions of the world.

Testimonios Of The Multiracial Latinx/A/O Student Experience, Victoria Juarez May 2021

Testimonios Of The Multiracial Latinx/A/O Student Experience, Victoria Juarez

Master's Theses

This thesis examines the experiences and identity development of multiracial Latinx/a/o students who attend Jesuit higher education institutions by way of testimonios. The research project sought to examine the following research questions: How do multicultural Latinx/a/o students perceive their identities in relation to their campus environment? What are the unique ways that multicultural Latinx/a/o students perceive themselves in the larger framework of society? How do multiracial Latinx/a/o students negotiate racial/ethnic/cultural boundaries? This research project found that multiracial Latinx/a/o understand their positionality as “othered” within a monoracial framework and that they face various barriers to full inclusion in either of their …
