The N-Terminus Of Mif Controls The Flexibility Of Specific Β-Sheet Residues Resulting In Dynamic Regulation Of Cd74 Activation, Georgios Pantouris

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a pleiotropic protein with catalytic, CD74, CXCR2, CXCR4, and nuclease activities that contribute to the pathology of various inflammatory disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. The majority of MIF-triggered pathological conditions are associated with the activation of CD74, MIF’s cell surface receptor. The mechanistic details of MIF-induced activation of CD74 were mostly unknown until recently where it was shown that intramolecular dynamic signals transmitted from an allosteric center regulate the CD74activation site on MIF’s surface. Via backbone dynamic signals, the same center also controls the enzymatic pocket of MIF and more specifically the catalytically active …

Metabolic Responses To Prolonged Fasting In A Naturally Obese Marine Mammal, Jane Khudyakov
Faculty Showcase
Many animals undergo fasting in order to survive during periods of severe weather, food scarcity, migration, or reproduction. While most animals decrease their metabolism while fasting, northern elephant seals fast for several months while undergoing energy-intensive activities such as molting and reproduction. Seals fuel their energy needs with large fat stores that they accumulate while foraging at sea, resembling human patients with diabetes and obesity (insulin sensitivity, high levels of glucose and fat) while fasting. While some of the hormone signals involved in fasting have been identified, the molecular mechanisms that regulate healthy metabolic adaptations to fasting in seals are …

The Primarily Undergraduate Nanomaterials Cooperative (PUNC) is an organization for research-active faculty studying nanomaterials at Primarily Undergraduate Institutions (PUIs), where undergraduate teaching and research go hand-in-hand. In this perspective, we outline the differences in maintaining an active research group at a PUI compared to an R1 institution. We also discuss the work of PUNC, which focuses on community building, instrument sharing, and facilitating new collaborations. Currently consisting of 37 members from across the United States, PUNC has created an online community consisting of its Web site (nanocooperative.org), a weekly online summer group meeting program for faculty and students, …

Biomedical science undergraduate students of accredited biomedical science programmes in Ireland are training to become professional medical scientists who diagnose disease. Hence, there is a strong emphasis at undergraduate level on practical laboratory skills, scientific writing and continuing professional development. In October 2020, a student-led webinar was held whereby one fourth-year and one third-year undergraduate student, having engaged their lecturer-mentor, conducted a webinar for first- and second-year undergraduate students with the intention of demystifying the art of writing a high quality laboratory report. The webinar consisted of four elements, namely a presentation by each of the three organisers; the fourth …

Placing Value On Environmental Literacy: A Case Study Of Biology Faculty Experiences, Ilene Sigrid Eberly
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this case study was to explore how contingent biology instructors place value on environmental literacy in their instruction and the instructional strategies used to foster their student's environmental literacy. This study also investigated the contextual experiences of contingent instructors influencing the value they place on environmental literacy. Participants included 11 faculty teaching introductory biology courses from two public universities in the Northeast. Our analysis focused on triangulation of participants semi-structured interviews, instructor-generated artifacts, and field notes from classroom observations, interviews, and artifacts. Findings revealed contingent biology instructors understand the importance of placing value on environmental literacy in …

How Faculty’S Academic Support Influence First-Year Female Students In Aviation: A Qualitative Case Study, Eugene Kim, Jorge L. Albelo
Publications
An increasing number of female students are enrolling in aviation education institutions to pursue their dreams. To combat the issue of the underrepresentation of females, this case study explored the significance of faculty’s academic support to first-year females in aviation. There is scant research surrounding the topic of faculty in higher education and their perspectives on academic support. This case study aimed to bridge the existing literature gap related to faculty’s academic support and teaching styles to first-year female students. This qualitative case study’s objective was to increase awareness of the importance of faculty’s academic support and better understand how …
