When The Lion Learns To Write: A Counterstory About A Doctoral Student's Qualitative Research Project, Martín Alberto Gonzalez

Chicano/Latino Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

This essay utilizes critical race theory composite counterstorytelling to tell a story about Alberto, a first-generation Xicano doctoral student who is presenting his dissertation research proposal to his qualitative research class. Through Alberto’s character, I discuss my complicated process of designing and conducting a research study. Specifically, I reflect on why I decided to study the experiences of Mexican, Mexican American, and Xicanx students in higher education, why I used critical race theory, Latinx/a/o critical race theory, and critical race spatial analysis as theoretical frameworks, why I utilized critical collaborative ethnography as my research approach, and why I chose counterstorytelling …

Gender imbalance in computing education is a well-known issue around the world. For example, in the UK and Ireland, less than 20% of the student population in computer science, ICT and related disciplines are women. Similar figures are seen in the labour force in the field across the EU. The term "leaky pipeline"; is often used to describe the lack of retention of women before they progress to senior roles. Career Pathways launched in August 2017 as the university-wide initiative to provide graduate student professional development. Career Pathways prepares graduate students for successful transition into thriving careers. It is a gateway to resources, programs, events, and planning tools for ODU graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. Career Pathways encompasses both the Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) and the Preparing Future Professionals (PFP) Certificates. The Preparing Future Faculty Certificate was an existing program, started in 2007, while the Preparing Future Professionals Certificate was launched in 2017 concurrently with Career Pathways. Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Purpose: Faculty-in-Residence (FIR) programs are implemented based on research that shows positive effects on student success when students interact with faculty outside of the classroom. However, most research is limited by cross-sectional studies of only students and does not look at the Faculty-in-Residence programs from a holistic perspective that investigates the impact on faculty. This study focuses on the impact, not only on students over time but additionally on the perceived impact on faculty who participate in Faculty-in-Residence programs.

Travis Brooks is a technology development coordinator in Academic Technology Services after serving as a project coordinator at Coastal Carolina University. He holds an MBA degree from ETSU.

Dr. Liedson Carneiro is a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Biological Sciences. Before coming to ETSU, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco. He holds a Ph.D. degree in ecology from the University of Sao Paulo.

Longitudinal Education And Career Outcomes Of A Cancer Research Training Program For Underrepresented Students: The Meharry-Vanderbilt-Tennessee State University Cancer Partnership, Meredith L. Meadows, Sarah V. Suiter, Linda J. Sealy, Dana R. Marshall, Margaret M. Whalen, Samuel E. Adunyah

This study examined longitudinal education and career outcomes of the Meharry-Vanderbilt-Tennessee State University Cancer Partnership, the longest-running National Cancer Institute (NCI) Comprehensive Partnerships in Advancing Cancer Health Equity (CPACHE) program site in the United States. Degree completion rates were calculated and progression along the entire postsecondary “pipeline” was quantified for 204 participants recruited between 2011 and 2020. For participants who had entered the workforce, career outcomes were also analyzed. Relative to comparison data, participants completed degrees and progressed through the higher education “pipeline” to earn advanced degrees at remarkably high rates; the majority entered careers in which they support or …

Higher Learning Research Communications

Objectives: During the COVID-19 pandemic, university faculty experienced an emergency pivot to online instruction in the Spring 2020 semester. Many had no prior online teaching experience and were given little time to adapt. This study examines pre-pandemic online teaching experience and training strategies used to learn how to teach online during the emergency remote teaching semester, perceptions of change in online teaching ability and the pandemic’s impact on teaching effectiveness, and interest in future online teaching opportunities.
