The Graphic Syllabus: Shedding A Visual Light On Course Organization, Linda B. Nilson
The Graphic Syllabus: Shedding A Visual Light On Course Organization, Linda B. Nilson
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
Students rarely understand how a course is organized from the week-by-week topical listing in traditional syllabi. This chapter explains a teaching tool called a graphic syllabus, which elucidates (and may improve) course design/organization and increases student retention of the material. It may resemble a flow chart or diagram or be designed around a graphic metaphor with another object. Included here are materials, experiences, and graphic syllabi from a workshop conducted several times on how to compose one (involving about 115 faculty and faculty developers). Graphic representations of text-based material appeal to the visual learning preferences of today’s students and complement …

A Modified Microteaching Model: A Cross–Disciplinary Approach To Faculty Development, John P. Hertel, Barbara J. Millis, Robert K. Noyd
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
Three departments at the United States Air Force Academy successfully used a microteaching model to train new faculty. Like other models, its structured approach used videotaping and peer coaching. The model also contained several unique features, including a cross-disciplinary approach to supplement feedback from department members and focused small group feedback with built-in preparation time. Thus, this model results not only in enhanced teaching performance, but also in departmental and institutional collegiality.

Bioinformatics is a new and rapidly evolving discipline that has emerged from the fields of experimental molecular biology and biochemistry, and from the the artificial intelligence, database, and algorithms disciplines of computer science. Largely because of the inherently interdisciplinary nature of bioinformatics research, academia has been slow to respond to strong industry and government demands for trained scientists to develop and apply novel bioinformatics techniques to the rapidly-growing, freely-available repositories of genetic and proteomic data. While some institutions are responding to this demand by establishing graduate programs in bioinformatics, the entrance barriers for these programs are high, largely due to …

A Model General Education Science Course Involving Humanities And Sciences, Education, And Medical School Collaboration, J. P. Chinnici
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
This article described an innovative general education biology course for non-science majors, BIOL 102-Science of Heredity (SOH), stressing active student learning and collaboration [1]. The course has three components. The lecture is taught by J. P. Chinnici and several undergraduate "teacher apprentices"; students receive a classnotes packet, take in-class quizzes, and interact to work on genetic worksheets; incentives include reviewing books, visiting a science museum, and finding albino squirrels. Recitations are taught by graduate students in the Department of Human Genetics; student activities include preparing a family pedigree, writing a term paper, reporting orally and in writing on several media …
Mathematics For Non-Science Majors Chemistry Course, D. D. Shillady
Mathematics For Non-Science Majors Chemistry Course, D. D. Shillady
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
A chemistry course developed for non-science majors has been taught at Virginia Commonwealth University for the past five years. CHEM 112 uses current event articles from science magazines to make use of a verbal channel of learning in non-science majors, but some mathematics is necessary. Examples are given of successful presentation of nuclear chemistry and data needed for a balanced discussion of global warming. Manipulation of symbols in balancing chemical and nuclear reactions, simple algebra, and logarithms for pH and unit analysis of simple stoichiometric conversions are fundamental to basic chemistry. The population of a voting democracy could benefit from …

Institutional Representation Of Student Presentations At Psychology Research Conferences: Trends And Implications, Cathy D. Schoonover
Institutional Representation Of Student Presentations At Psychology Research Conferences: Trends And Implications, Cathy D. Schoonover
Masters Theses
Student participation in psychology undergraduate research conferences has pedagogical benefits encompassing experiential and collaborative learning, and enhancement of critical thinking skills. This project was designed to determine whether more conference participants originate from baccalaureate colleges than from research universities and what topics they present. Archival data were gathered from five geographically diverse undergraduate conferences and information extracted to determine institutions of origin. Institutions were categorized according to the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, then compared using chi-square tests. Information concerning topics presented were categorized according to six content domains of psychology and also analyzed with chi-square tests. The …

Tracking Transfer Of Reform Methodology From Science And Math College Courses To The Teaching Style Of Beginning Teachers Of Grades 5-12, E. Judson, D. Sawada
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
The purpose of this study was to determine if reformed science and math courses at community colleges and the university were impacting education majors as they began a teaching career. The reformed courses, in contrast to typical lecture classes, implemented inquiry-based methods that emphasized deep understanding of fundamental science and math concepts. Trained evaluators, utilizing the Reformed Teaching Observation Protocol (RTOP) gathered a total of 86 classroom observations to gauge the level of reform that beginning teachers (one to three years’ teaching experience) were implementing in grades 5-12. The pre-service experience of the beginning teachers varied from having had zero …

Student Affairs Divisions' Incorporation Of Student Learning Principles At Cccu Versus Non-Cccu Institutions, Jeff Doyle
Student Affairs Divisions' Incorporation Of Student Learning Principles At Cccu Versus Non-Cccu Institutions, Jeff Doyle
Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development
With the shift from an industry-based to a knowledge-based society, American higher education, and student affairs in particular, is under increasing pressure to prove its role in facilitating students' learning. The Student Learning Imperative (ACPA, 1994) and the Principles of Good Practice for Student Affairs (ACPA & NASPA, 1997) provided a professionally supported foundation for the new learning philosophy within student life.
The strong religious mission and the ministry model of student development in Christian higher education may affect the degree to which student-centered learning is incorporated. This study examined the extent to which chief student affairs officers at institutions …

Means And Ends Of The Andrews University Leadership Program: A Study Of Its Critical Components And Outcomes As They Relate To The Mission Statement, José A. Alaby
Dissertations
Problem. The history of education shows tensions between its means and ends. Tensions became more apparent in contemporary Christian educational institutions. The Leadership Program (LP) of Andrews University was developed as an alternative and innovative means of delivering graduate education with a defined mission. It is job-embedded-theory and practice are united in the participants' workplaces, where they show their competency in 20 areas. It stresses the importance of the individuality of the participant in the development of a teaching/learning community. Yet, the dialectical relationship of the LP's ends and means has not been systematically studied in light of its …

D/Deafness And The Basic Course: A Case Study Of Universal Instructional Design And Students Who Are D/Deaf In The (Aural) Communication Classroom, Julia R. Johnson, Susan M. Pliner, Tom Burkhart
Basic Communication Course Annual
The primary purpose of this essay is to suggest ways to create a universally inclusive curriculum, which, by definition, addresses the learning needs of all students, including students with disabilities or, in this case, students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. Presented with the opportunity of having a d/Deaf students in a public speaking class, we reflect on the accommodations made, the assumptions inherent in an inclusive classroom, and the ideology of ableism. Because d/Deafness is as much a cultural identity as an auditory condition, we also address how to create safe learning environments for diverse student populations through the use …
