Honors programs typically enroll many students interested in the healthcare field, and honors administrators and faculty do their best to ensure that those students’ dreams are fulfilled. With Medical Doctor (MD) program acceptance rates averaging just 6.1%, students need a standout application. Experience has shown that getting accepted into a medical school is more than earning a great GPA and excelling on the MCAT exam; it also requires convincing a committee of professionals that an applicant has the right personal qualities and work ethic to succeed in the field of medicine, and applicants need to highlight their clinical experience as …

Empathy Development Among Undergraduate Health Professions’ Students Serving As Caregivers To Hospice Patients, Kelly Melekis, Carol S. Weisse, Emma Phillips, Claire Slattery

Although empathy is considered a core competency for healthcare providers and has been shown to play an important role in improving patient outcomes, empathy development while working with dying patients is not well understood and may present challenges during clinical training. This qualitative study explored empathy development among 24 undergraduate health professions students participating in an experiential training program where they served as caregivers providing bedside care to hospice patients. Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Occupational therapists play a vital role in the care of individuals with feeding, eating, and swallowing (FES) disorders across the lifespan. Although there are certain standards created by the Accreditation Council of Occupational Therapy (ACOTE) for understanding of assessment and management practices specific to FES, there are inconsistencies in how occupational therapy programs in the United States address FES disorders within their curriculum. This cross-sectional exploratory survey study received responses from 54 Master of Occupational Therapy (MSOT) programs and 63 entry-level Occupational Therapy Doctoral (OTD) programs. Massive Upper Gi Bleeding From Duodenal Invasion Of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Successfully Treated With Embolization And Hemospray®, Patrick Twohig, Erin Walsh, Amy Calderon

Direct invasion of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) into the duodenum is a unique and life-threatening complication of HCC that has been rarely reported. A 60-year-old male with known HCC and cirrhosis presented with melena. Computed tomography of the abdomen and pelvis showed a 7cm hepatic mass abutting the duodenum. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy demonstrated a large, actively oozing mass in the duodenum treated with Hemospray® followed by transarterial embolization (TAE). Active upper gastrointestinal bleeding due to duodenal invasion of HCC can be successfully treated with Hemospray® Endoscopic Hemostat and TAE.

Today’s societal challenges are causing young people to feel less hopeful about the future, negatively impacting their mental health. Educators are called to address this crisis and provide opportunities for young people to experience hope. Jesuit colleges and universities are uniquely poised to do so given their focus on caring for the whole person and the recent release of the Universal Apostolic Preferences, which prioritize “journeying with youth in the creation of a hope-filled future.” High-impact practices at Jesuit institutions could particularly be effective given the ways in which they intellectually engage students and help students cultivate a sense of …

The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning

This qualitative content analysis (QCA) examined five premier counseling journals and their coverage of death related issues from 1986-2022: Journal of Counseling and Development (JCD), Journal of Humanistic Counseling (JHC), Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development (JMCD), Counselor Education and Supervision (CES) and Counseling and Values (CV). Of the 6180 journal articles published across all five journals, 62 articles covered death related topics. Eight major death related themes emerged through the QCA process and included: Research on Death-Related Issues, Personal Reflection and Poetry, Grief and Loss Education, Book Reviews, Responding to Campus Death, Providing Grief Counseling, DSM and Bereavement Diagnosis …

Abstract

Two significant nursing landmark reports published in 2021 are enhancing standards and providing guidance for nursing education and practice. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials: Core Competencies of Professional Nursing Education (2021) provides a blueprint for educationally and experientially preparing nurses for practice. The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity report defines issues such as health disparities and inequities, with recommendations for the role nurses should play in making change to improve the health of the nation.

Introduction: Early placement of interprofessional education (IPE) in academic curricula may foster foundational learning to shape student attitudes, knowledge, and skills and better prepare practice-ready clinicians for future team-based collaboration. The purpose of this narrative review was to investigate and analyze the current use of IPE in OT and PT higher education.

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences of burnout among adjunct professors at higher education institutions. The central research question guiding this study was what are the lived experiences of burnout among adjunct professors at higher education institutions? This study found that adjunct professors burned-out due to their higher education institutions’ unreasonable work expectations, tight deadlines, and lack of resources. Using the guiding theory of job demands and resources (JD-R) developed by Demerouti, Bakker, Nachreiner, and Schaufeli, the phenomenon’s essence was discovered as it highlighted how excessive work demands and a lack of resources …

Journal of Research in Technical Careers

The agricultural industry lacks qualified workers, suggesting students may not participate in opportunities that effectively develop their employability skills. We used a phenomenological case study approach to investigate Texas A&M University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences students’ career-readiness and factors influencing career-readiness. We conducted interviews with 19 juniors and seniors. Open coding procedures revealed five emergent themes—Career Advice-Seeking Behavior,Employability Skills Development, Network Establishment, Relevant Experiences, and Personal Growth. Findings indicate that students do not take advantage of University resources to help them with career preparation.
