My chosen Capstone project topic is pediatric end of life care as a quality problem in health care. As I have researched, there was a study conducted about advanced cancer pediatric patients. It stated, “A study of children with advanced cancer revealed that 48% had pain, 46% fatigue, and 37% irritability. In addition, many bereaved (and nonbereaved) parents experience psychological distress, poor health behaviors, work impairment and financial hardship.” (Johnston, 2017) I chose this topic because of the hospice population I have begun to work with and my passion for pediatric healthcare. Interprofessional education (IPE) is an important component of health science training. Ensuring all students have access to necessary information prior to, during, and following simulation-enhanced IPE (Sim-IPE) activities is imperative to ensure a beneficial learning environment and student engagement. Ensuring access to necessary materials can be difficult due to differences in educational resources between institutions. This manuscript will assess the feasibility, acceptability, and satisfaction of using Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) as an educational tool for a Sim-IPE activity. Academic stress has become a common problem among nursing students, which can lead to undesirable student outcomes if their stress goes unabated. The purpose of this quasi-experimental pretest/posttest study is to determine if an intervention using a positive reappraisal coping intervention (PRCI) can reduce student nurse stress. Knowles’ theory of adult learning along with Lazarus and Folkman’s transactional model of stress and coping (TMSC) provided a foundation for the study. This qualitative research study was conducted to better understand women leaders’ perceptions of compassion in higher education. Specifically, what are the types of distressing events and the settings wherein a compassionate response was offered; what are the compassionate actions experienced or offered, and what might enhance or inhibit the process of compassion. The study was also conducted to examine if and how compassion enhances or influences learning (Knowles, 2011), growing and healing (Rogers, 1967), and thriving at work (McGregor, 1960). COVID-19 closed colleges and forced faculty and students to learn a new way of teaching and learning. Like most institutions, Marshall University’s College of Education and Professional Development struggled to provide the practicum experience required for teacher preparation when most public schools shifted to remote learning. This qualitative study investigated the reactions of, and ongoing impact on, a university’s college of education’s administrators, faculty, undergraduates, the institution’s instructional designers, and the Counseling Center’s director when the campus closed spring of 2020 due to the pandemic. University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This evocative autoethnographic study explored the lived experiences of a mature doctoral student navigating grief and loss while progressing through a doctoral program. The research connected the personal narrative of the author a nurse, educator, wife, mother, and widow to broader themes of resilience, identity, and persistence in higher education. Using narrative inquiry and self-reflective vignettes, this dissertation sought to illuminate how grief intersects with academic life, shaping both personal meaning and scholarly perseverance.

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

The purpose of this study was to explore the effectiveness of a multi-method approach for ethics education. The investigators measured occupational therapy (OT) students’ self-efficacy for ethical decision-making and explored their perception of what contributed to their confidence in understanding the American Occupational Therapy Association’s (AOTA) 2020 Occupational Therapy Code of Ethics. This one-group mixed methods study included twenty Master of OT students. Self-efficacy was measured via a pre-test and post-test using an adapted version of the New General Self-Efficacy Scale, and open-ended questions captured data regarding student perceptions of what contributed to their confidence. This qualitative study aimed to address the gap in the research related to end-of-life counseling by exploring the experiences of counselors working with clients at end of life. While counseling literature and education are lacking regarding end of life, many counselors will work alongside clients approaching death. Bridging Education And Service Learning Through Palliative Care, Jamie Borchardt

Service learning can bridge the gap between traditional and transformational learning, as students are able to relate the course terminology directly to field experience. This project was set up to determine if volunteering for a semester at Hospice had any effect on emotional intelligence and positivity. A paired samples t-test compared differences in pre- and post-test scores on the Positivity Scale (PS) and the Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Test (SSEIT). The PS revealed a significant difference in pre- and post-test surveys: t(5)=-2.4, p=.03.

Putting The Commercial In Social Enterprise Education: Employing The For-Profit To Nonprofit Business Model In The Classroom, Rasheda L. Weaver

This article presents the case of an undergraduate social entrepreneurship class where students run social enterprises on campus for four weeks. After completing sales, students donate their profits to local nonprofit organizations. The case illustrates how university classes may equip students to address societal problems through entrepreneurial activity.

Graduate And Undergraduate Student Development As A Result Of Participation In A Grief Education Service Learning Course, Laura S. Wheat, Arden Szepe, Nathan B. West, Melinda M. Gibbons

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education

Limited research exists on the role service learning can play in helping students understand loss and grief. Through semi-structured interviews with students and instructors, online surveys, and course feedback, this qualitative case study examined the experiences of 15 university students in an outreach course working with grieving K-12 students. Students self-reported gaining greater intra- and interpersonal understanding and grief processing self-efficacy. Instructors emphasized intentionality and the intertwined nature of course experiences influencing meaning making.

The Family Story Project: Narrative, Ethics, And Community Collaboration Between Ronald Mcdonald House Of Durham Families And Pre-Health Undergraduates, Denise K. Comer

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education

The Family Story Project (FSP) brought together families at the Ronald McDonald House of Durham (RMHD) and pre-health undergraduates to co-construct narratives and visual portraits about family experiences. FSP shows that narratives can be rewarding for families and offer formative, skill-building experiences for pre-health undergraduates. FSP also demonstrates the ethical complexities surrounding community-university partnerships in health contexts, particularly with vulnerable populations such as children.

Beyond Objectivity: Examining The Effects Of Incorporating Civic Engagement Into Higher Education Journalism Courses, Jennifer Brannock Cox

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education

This paper examines a case study comparing students in civic engagement-enhanced journalism classes with those in which civic engagement was not emphasized in a medium-sized Mid- Atlantic university. Students completed surveys at the conclusion of the spring 2017 semester assessing their attitudes toward professional journalism roles. Students in courses containing civic engagement work prized contextual roles and were more open to non-traditional forms of community engagement journalism than their counterparts, who focused more on interpretive/ disseminator roles.

Social And Cognitive Outcomes Of Service Learning: Results From A Pre-Post And Control Group Comparison, Rebecca G. Ryan

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education

Students in an undergraduate course opted to either complete a service-learning project or write article summary papers over the course of a semester. Analyses revealed a significant increase in aspects of empathy, social responsibility, and community and personal involvement in the service-learning group, but not in the control group. The findings are discussed in terms of the social and cognitive benefits of service learning and considerations for incorporating service learning into a gerontology-related course.

This paper describes the challenges experienced in a study premised on scholarly engagement that consisted of a partnership between the nutritional science program and medical providers at the Veterans Administration, Greater Los Angeles, following allegations of systemic misconduct in the delivery of health care by the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). Since the VHA is a primary provider of medical training in the United States, we were interested in obtaining their opinion about and knowledge of vitamin D nutriture in relation to cognitive and physical functioning.
