College Sojourners' Reentry Experiences After Studying Abroad, Samantha Rose Maiolo
College Sojourners' Reentry Experiences After Studying Abroad, Samantha Rose Maiolo
Honors Scholar Theses
When people think of studying abroad, they often think the experience ends when a study abroad participant returns home, but the reentry experience back home can be just as significant as the experience in the host country. In this study, I explored the following questions: (1) What emotional, social, and academic transitions do students experience when returning home from studying abroad? and (2) In what ways do the experiences students have abroad change their perspective of their life in the home culture? We interviewed 10 and surveyed 3 recent study abroad returnees from a large state university in New England. …

Challenges And Strategies For Caribbean Students Pursuing Education In The United States, Keyeria Mccormick
Challenges And Strategies For Caribbean Students Pursuing Education In The United States, Keyeria Mccormick
Masters Projects
Caribbean students who come to study in the United States face significant obstacles that shape their college experience. These students struggle with more than typical academic challenges; they deal with financial pressures, the complexities of adapting to a new culture, strict visa rules, and a lack of targeted support from their institutions. This project examines their experiences, drawing from research on how factors like emotional and cultural intelligence, mental health, peer relationships, and systemic inequalities affect their educational paths. Using Critical Race Theory and Social Identity Theory as foundations, this work shows how deep-rooted inequities in U.S. higher education make …
Campus Vibrancy Through The Lens Of Student Organizations Collaboration, Elijah A. Fosu
Campus Vibrancy Through The Lens Of Student Organizations Collaboration, Elijah A. Fosu
Masters Projects
Universities are increasingly aware that isolated student organizations hinder engagement, replicate efforts, and diminish campus life. At Grand Valley State University, over 400 Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) vie for attention but often fail to collaborate, resulting in many students lacking cohesive and impactful co‑curricular experiences. Based on experiential learning theories such as Astin’s Student Involvement framework, Tinto’s theory of student departure, and the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, the RSO Collaborate and Create project aims to tackle this issue by offering a structured pathway for collaboration across organizations, simultaneously enhancing leadership skills and improving the campus environment. While the …
The Dark Lord And The Mafia Boss: A Comparison And Contrast Of Toxic Leadership In Darth Vader And Vito Corleone, Mya A. Garcia, Mikheil Makhviladze
The Dark Lord And The Mafia Boss: A Comparison And Contrast Of Toxic Leadership In Darth Vader And Vito Corleone, Mya A. Garcia, Mikheil Makhviladze
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
This project employs a qualitative media analysis to explore toxic leadership through a comparative study of two characters: Darth Vader, the Dark Lord of the Sith, from the Star Wars Franchise, and Vito Corleone, from the movie The Godfather. Both rule very strongly, but in a destructive manner to those who serve underneath them. From using the book Haslam et al.’s (2020) "The New Psychology of Leadership”, we can analyze how they rule toxically through manipulation, fear, control, and how the followers are affected by their rule. Darth Vader rules under the idea that centralized power brings order. Never taking …
At-Risk Students' Perceptions Of Holistic Advising: A Phenomenological Study, Jonathan David Broyles
At-Risk Students' Perceptions Of Holistic Advising: A Phenomenological Study, Jonathan David Broyles
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand at-risk students’ perceptions of success after having received holistic advising practices at public, four-year universities located in the Southeast United States. The theory that guided this study was Maslow’s Theory of Human Motivation, which emphasizes the importance of addressing students’ academic, social, personal, physiological, safety, and emotional needs to support their academic success better. The Central Research Question was: what are at-risk students’ perceptions of success after receiving holistic advising practices? The transcendental phenomenological approach allowed the researcher to explore the phenomenon with others who have experienced the same phenomenon through …

LGBTQIA+ Archive Class Projects
Citation: Klinkhammer, B. (2025, April 9). Students make their voice heard at Applied Engineering building opening. Northern Iowan, 2.
This article is a description of a recent protest at the new Applied Engineering Building. Well over 100 UNI students, Cedar Falls High School students, and the Cedar Valley came together to protest Kim Reynolds appearance for the ribbon cutting ceremony. Kim Reynolds failed to appear to give a speech and to help cut the ribbon. I think that in itself is so powerful, to know that she didn't show up because people showed up to protest against someone so …

Just Plain(S) Native: Isolating Experiences Of Non-Plains Native Students At A Primarily Plains Nasnti, Bryne Qavvik Croyle Johnson
Undergraduate Research Symposium 2025
Higher education institutions have historically underserved the needs of Native students, even when active efforts are made to the improvement of services and support. Sense of belonging is a particularly ephemeral point of student’s engagement with a campus community, and studies about Native students don’t always account for the vast cultural differences between the different tribes and villages. My aim with this study is to present for consideration the isolating effects of culturally nonspecific services and groups on Native students at the University of Minnesota, Morris, a Native American-Serving Non-Tribal Institution (NASNTI). Employing ethnographic interview methods and discursive analysis, I …

The Potential Impact Of Overusing Isolation Precautions, Laci Johnson
2025 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations
While Isolation Precautions (IP) help prevent infections, excessive use can harm patients' mental and physical health. Research shows that prolonged IP increases anxiety, depression, and social isolation, leading to worsened outcomes and longer hospital stays. Overuse may also create stigma and communication barriers, reducing care quality. This poster highlights the need for a balanced approach to IP to protect both patient well-being and infection control.

Plowing Through Struggles: Understanding Mental Health Challenges In Farmers, Emily Cobb
2025 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations
Growing up around agriculture and within the industry, it has allowed me to see many perspectives of life. One aspect that is not nearly discussed enough is the mental health toll farmers experience due to their grueling occupation. They experience the pressure of fluctuating commodity prices, isolation, financial instability, and working long hours. This project aims to explore the mental health that farmers face, investigate the underlying factors, and assess the support systems available to them. Highlighting the issues will raise awareness, advocate for resources in rural areas, reduce stigma, ensure the farmers have the support needed to navigate their …

Pediatric End-Of-Life Care: Communication Quality Project, Kailey Johnson
2025 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations
My chosen Capstone project topic is pediatric end of life care as a quality problem in health care. As I have researched, there was a study conducted about advanced cancer pediatric patients. It stated, “A study of children with advanced cancer revealed that 48% had pain, 46% fatigue, and 37% irritability. In addition, many bereaved (and nonbereaved) parents experience psychological distress, poor health behaviors, work impairment and financial hardship.” (Johnston, 2017) I chose this topic because of the hospice population I have begun to work with and my passion for pediatric healthcare. As you may know, the word hospice is …

2025 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations
Children who have grown up around parents or caregivers who use substances face hardships, attachment issues, trauma, and genetics that may cause future use of substances. Twenty-five to seventy-five percent of substance abusers have experienced trauma or abuse (Carmona, 2022). Many studies showed the awareness of parental substance abuse and how it affects their children. The focus of this study is to bring awareness to how substance abuse affects children. It may lead to future substance use or mental health concerns.
Healing Through Nature: The Impact Of Light And Trees As Non- Pharmacological Interventions In Hospital Patient Care, Amanda Ann Isele
Healing Through Nature: The Impact Of Light And Trees As Non- Pharmacological Interventions In Hospital Patient Care, Amanda Ann Isele
2025 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations
While in the clinical setting I observed that medications can only go so far (effectiveness, time between doses, and effects of the drugs), and the need for a nonpharmacological approach to improve patient outcomes. While researching the benefits of changing the patients’ environment with lighting, and trees I realized that this would also reduce nurse burnout. • Using the QSEN principles of evidence based practices and quality improvement to guide my approach, I researched natural light, light therapy, and trees to improve patient outcomes and the effects on nurses. • Studies show that natural light, light therapy, and exposure to …

Facing The Silence: Addressing Nurse Abuse In Emergency Departments, Jodi Perkins
2025 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations
Nurse abuse in emergency departments (EDs) is an escalating concern that jeopardizes both the safety of healthcare professionals and the quality of patient care. The unique and high-pressure environment of the ED, characterized by unpredictable patient volumes, long wait times, and the presence of individuals in crisis, creates a fertile ground for aggressive behavior. Studies have shown that nurses are frequently subjected to various forms of abuse, including verbal harassment, physical assaults, and psychological intimidation, all of which can lead to significant emotional and professional repercussions. • Recent research indicates that a staggering percentage of ED nurses experience workplace violence, …

The Undertreatment Of Pain In Women, Abigail R. Schultz
2025 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations
Pain is a prevalent reason for patients to seek medical care. Despite a high incidence of pain conditions, there is evidence suggesting that women, in particular, experience undertreatment of pain. The undertreatment of pain in women can contribute to long-term negative health effects and physical suffering. • The QSEN principles are the foundation to quality improvement research and implementation. Within this project, patient-centered care, safety, and evidence-based practice are incorporated to highlight the key focus of the need for women’s health advocacy and pain management
Comprehensive Pain Management In Pediatric Patients: Evaluating Pharmacological And Non-Pharmacological Therapies, Danielle Willis
Comprehensive Pain Management In Pediatric Patients: Evaluating Pharmacological And Non-Pharmacological Therapies, Danielle Willis
2025 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations
Within the hospital setting it is seen how chronic pain affects people of all ages. At hospital A, adult clients rate their chronic pain on a scale of 0-10, voice aggravating and alleviating factors and medications are provided based upon that scale. Unfortunately, pain in the pediatric setting is not as easy to assess and treat. Chronic pain substantially affects a number of children and adolescents and can lead to a diminished quality of life. Addressing this challenge requires a holistic approach that combines pharmacological treatments with non-pharmacological treatments to alleviate pain and enhance daily living.

Continuity Of Attachment Strategy From Preschool To Adolescence, Annabelle Mcneal, Abby Chaney, Gabby Blackburn, Shari L. Kidwell
2025 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations
Attachment Theory recognizes that humans naturally form protective, enduring relationships with their primary caregivers which first develop in infancy.
• Attachment strategies become refined across development to best adapt to the caregiving environment (Crittenden, Landini, & Speiker, 2021).
• Crittenden’s Dynamic Maturational Model organizes attachment strategies by pecific patterns of affect and cognition (2011).
A (avoidant): dismissing own negative affect, distorting cognition
B (secure): balanced integration of affect & cognition
C (ambivalent): involving others in own affect, omitted cognition
Continuity in attachment across development was originally predicted. However, both DMM and non- DMM research has found some degree of discontinuity …

Supporting First-Generation College Students Experiencing Imposter Syndrome, Jaydenn R. Knepp
Masters Projects
This project explores the relationship between imposter syndrome and academic performance in first-generation college students (FGCS), proposing a peer mentorship program as an intervention. Grounded in Kolontari et al.’s (2023) sponsorship model and Stoller’s (2021) integration of Chickering’s (1969) and Sanford’s (1966) theories, the program focuses on mentor selection, training, structured activities, and ongoing support to build self-efficacy and a sense of belonging. A key component of this solution is the implementation of horizontal peer mentorship, which encourages reciprocal, collaborative relationships between mentors and mentees. FGCS mentors are trained to address imposter syndrome firsthand, with activities like self-affirmation exercises and …
