Using Doctoral Education And Research-Based Learning To Advance The Nurse Leader, Kara R. De La Fosse Jan 2023

Using Doctoral Education And Research-Based Learning To Advance The Nurse Leader, Kara R. De La Fosse

The Journal of Advancing Education Practice

Nurse leaders perform in highly autonomous positions in two dimensions; academia, and the clinical setting with the awesome responsibility to serve and protect others. To guide nursing practice, research-based skills are crucial to ensure leadership decisions are founded in evidence-based practice. Random controlled studies are gold-standard in healthcare compared to correlation or descriptive studies and employ a systematic review to strengthen findings (Schmidt & Brown, 2021). Research skills are prominent in numerous components of the leadership scope to perform at a stellar level.

The Impact Of Self-Care On Nursing Faculty Burnout And Worklife, Jennifer J. Harrington Jan 2023

The Impact Of Self-Care On Nursing Faculty Burnout And Worklife, Jennifer J. Harrington

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Nursing faculty are relied upon to prepare the nursing workforce of the future. The stress and pressure felt by nursing faculty impacts their ability to practice self-care, and this threatens their ability to perform optimally. Lack of self-care can lead to diminished quality of life, and ultimately burnout. Feelings of burnout and decreased quality of life, which are precursors to faculty turnover, further perpetuates the nursing shortage. A Quality Improvement (QI) Pilot Initiative, with an evidence-based design methodology was implemented within one university’s nursing department, located in a western state, to address this problem. Using a pre-post survey design and …

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

Honors education has a rich history of preparing students to be good communicators, to think deeply and broadly, to collaborate effectively, and to be ethical citizens engaged in communities. The challenges of contemporary society, however, call for something more. To engage effectively with complex societal issues, students must identify and collaborate effectively with a broad range of stakeholders in the community, understand and employ systems thinking, value highly diverse perspectives, and develop communication skills for conflict management. To develop these additional skills and perspectives, the authors invoke the concept of fourth space as the deep engagement of honors students in …

Evaluation Of A Math And Medication Administration Proficiency Program In A Pre-Licensure Nursing Program, Dianne J. Hoekstra

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Calculation of the correct dosages is a key factor for safe patient medication administration. For decades nurse educators have aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of the pre-licensure nursing students for medication administration. In a midwestern pre-licensure nursing school, a program was implemented using a curriculum wide approach for the teaching, remediation, and assessment of the math skills required for safe medication administration; known as the Math and Medication Administration Proficiency (MMAP) program. This dissertation evaluates the MMAP program using a logic model and mixed methods approach. Results indicated improvement in the pre-licensure nursing students’ success with the testing …

Graduate Student Awareness Of Student Services, Shayla Schumacher Jan 2023

Graduate Student Awareness Of Student Services, Shayla Schumacher

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Studies have shown that student services aid in students’ success while attending college, however many students may not utilize these resources or even know they exist. Furthermore, there is limited research on graduate students’ awareness and usage of these services. Graduate students face different circumstances than other student populations yet may not access these beneficial resources. This study uses a mixed methods survey to examine graduate students’ awareness and usage of student services at a state school. This study shows attending the university as an undergraduate student first contributes to a student’s knowledge and usage of student services.

‘A Healthy Mtu’ A Mixed Methods Baseline Programme Of Research To Empirically Inform A Campus Health Promotion Initiative Within An Irish Higher Education Setting, Andrea Bickerdike

Theses

Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have been called to lead global health promotion actions, yet there remains a dearth of empirically informed ‘Healthy University’ (HU) initiatives. This thesis constituted a baseline mixed methods needs assessment to inform a settings-based health promotion (HP) initiative (‘A Healthy MTU’) within a multi-campus ‘case’ HEI in Ireland (Cork campuses of MTU, formerly CIT). Specific aims were to (i) investigate student and staff health metrics, and (ii) identify the cultural and environmental determinants of health and wellbeing within the case HEI setting. Using a phased, mixed methodology (QUAN-QUAL), five sequential empirical studies were undertaken. Quantitative data …

Using Interteaching In A Fully Asynchronous Online Honors Seminar Course, Steffen Wilson, Steven Shisley Dr.

Pedagogicon Conference Proceedings

This paper describes the modification of the Interteaching approach to simulate a seminar course in the asynchronous online course format. Next, students had an interteaching discussion by reading and provided a brief comment on their classmate’s answers to each question. After this discussion, students completed a record sheet summarizing their reaction to the discussion and providing the course instructor with any remaining questions about the article content. Each unit ended with the course instructor providing students with a recorded wrap up video that discussed their unanswered questions …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research study examined student’s expectation, experiences and satisfaction with faculty academic advising using a prescriptive vs. developmental lens. The intent was to explore the student’s expectations of academic advising, determine if their experiences aligned with their expectation and if this led to satisfaction of their academic advising. This study utilized the Systems theory to determine how academic advising is performed by the program and if that experience for the student is how the systems (institution, college, department, and program) are promoting the form of advising. This study utilized a qualitative case study approach, guided by three research questions. Data …
