Exploring The Education Profile And Pipeline For Latinos In New York State, Anthony De Jesús, Daniel W. Vasquez

Policy Documents

Using various education and census databases 1this policy brief explores the Latino education pipeline in New York State and, where possible, uses disaggregated data to analyze the changes in educational enrollment, attainment, and achievement for Latinos between 1990 and 2000. The education pipeline represents the distribution of Latinos enrolled in pre-school through graduate and professional school in New York State as well as the education attainment levels of the adult population over 25 years of age. Disaggregated data provide the best picture of the educational situation of various Latino subgroups as they relate to each other and other racial/ethnic populations …

Academic Rigor: An Explanation Or An Apology?, James Lubker Sep 2005

Academic Rigor: An Explanation Or An Apology?, James Lubker

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Academic rigor is a topic that elicits some rather strong feelings. I've heard students complain that the courses they are taking are too easy and that we don't demand enough of them. Those students want more rigor in their courses. I've heard faculty complain that students are poorly prepared, have distressingly short attention-spans, and seem to be more interested in parties than in studying. Those faculty don't think that students want or will tolerate increased academic rigor. I've heard parents demand that we refund their money for a course because their child didn't really learn anything and that faculty are …

A Review By Jesse G. Swan Of Lessons Of The Masters, By George Steiner, Jesse Swan Sep 2005

A Review By Jesse G. Swan Of Lessons Of The Masters, By George Steiner, Jesse Swan

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Lessons of the Masters, George Steiner's published version of the Charles Eliot Norton lectures he gave in 2001-2002, is to be a lesson in the value of conceptualizing, fostering, and admiring highly idiosyncratic individuals engaged in teaching, be it teaching live, present persons or future, absent generations. The theme and style are familiar, as is the abiding sense of nostalgia and impending elegy: "Having taught for half a century, and in numerous countries and systems of higher education," Steiner announces in the first sentence of these melancholic reflections, "I have found myself increasingly uncertain as to the legitimacy, as …

Flarr Pages: Volume 1, Pages 1-43, Foreign Language Association Of The Red River

FLARR Pages

During Spring and Fall conferences of FLARR, since the Fall of 1994 (the organization holds joint meetings with MCTLC in the Spring), 159 presentations were were delivered. Of those talks, about one quarter were submitted to FLARR Pages and appear now in Volume #1. The journal articles are a sampling of the issues and concerns of the past decade. They represent, as do all the presentations (see Appendix A), the innovative ways in which faculty have responded to current demands and challenges of teaching, research, service, programming, and many other areas of professional life, both in the public schools and …

Cultural Competence And Curricula In Physical Therapist Professional Education, Beth Ernst Jamali

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

The purpose of this research was to examine the methods and degree to which content related to cultural competence is incorporated into current entry-level physical therapist education. Face-to-face interviews were performed with 10 program directors from various physical therapist education programs across the country to obtain in-depth information regarding cultural competence in the physical therapy curricula. A questionnaire was sent to all of the 193 accredited physical therapist education programs in the United States as a second means to collect information regarding the methods and extent to which cultural competence is included in the physical therapy curricula. Data were collected …

A Comparison Of Anonymous E-Peer Review Versus Identifiable E-Peer Review On College Student Writing Performance And Learning Satisfaction, Ruiling Lu Apr 2005

A Comparison Of Anonymous E-Peer Review Versus Identifiable E-Peer Review On College Student Writing Performance And Learning Satisfaction, Ruiling Lu

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of anonymous e-peer review with identifiable e-peer review on student writing performance and learning satisfaction. It also investigated whether anonymous e-peer review facilitated a greater amount of critical peer feedback.

Quasi-experimental design was used to test group differences on the dependent variables. Participants were 48 freshmen enrolled in two English Composition classes at Old Dominion University in the fall semester of 2003. The two intact classes taught by the same instructor were randomly assigned to the anonymous e-peer review group and the identifiable e-peer review group.

The results showed that …
