Therapy Use And Self-Stigma Of Seeking Help Among College Students Of Color, Rawle David Sookwah Ragoonath
Therapy Use And Self-Stigma Of Seeking Help Among College Students Of Color, Rawle David Sookwah Ragoonath
Theses and Dissertations
Amidst rapid diversification of higher education student bodies, discrepancies in help-seeking relative to endorsed psychological distress have been noted among college students of color. The treatment utilization disparity exhibited by minoritized racial and ethnic groups attending college necessitates analysis of factors that impact help-seeking. Colleges have increasingly implemented multi-systemic interventions to address rising mental illness prevalence rates across college student demographics. Addressing treatment use disparities and implementing culturally competent services are foci of updated college mental health models. Empowering help-seeking is vital to promoting campus community health. Saint Arnault’s (2009) cultural determinants of help-seeking model (CDHS) posits the interplay of …

Mindfulness And Perceived Stress Among English Language Students In Uzbekistan, Laurie A. Wolfe, Rakhmatullo Akhmedov
The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning
The current study investigated the effective of mindfulness training versus study skills training on perceived stress among Uzbek English language students. The researchers conducted a quasi-experimental study using a convenience sample of sixty 2nd year students studying English as a foreign language at a large public university in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. One group of students (n = 30) received mindfulness training while the other group served as an active control group (n = 30) and received study skills training. Both groups received 20-minute training in their English classes, four days a week, for 4-weeks. All participants completed pre- …

Exploring School Of Education Faculty Emotion, Attitudes, And Experiences Related To Student Mental Health, Jesse Mossholder
The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning
Student mental health concerns among adolescents and young adults are continuing to rise (Reis et al., 2023, Ashoorian, 2018; Burns et al., 2017; Davies et al., 2016). The purpose of the present study was to explore teacher preparation faculty perceptions of student mental health concerns. The author adapted Stine Ekorne’s (2016) Perceived Competence Scale to score each participant's perceived competence, responsibility, and emotions related to addressing student mental health concerns. The 27-item Qualtrics questionnaire was distributed to faculty and academic staff in the School of Education at a midwestern public university. Participants were recruited through email. Participants included tenured and …
Teachers’ Perceptions Of Public Policy And Their Impact On Teacher Retention, Carl Bryan
Teachers’ Perceptions Of Public Policy And Their Impact On Teacher Retention, Carl Bryan
The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning
Fewer issues have received more attention by education researchers than understanding the global teacher shortage, especially in public schools. Concurrent with this issue is the concern that the rate of teacher hires is insufficient to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse body of students. Further, while the research on job satisfaction, specifically in understanding their impact on teacher retention, is multifaceted, causal data underlying these approaches have been limited. This research gains significance in light of policymakers’ increasing calls for restructuring the way schools do business to effectively meet the diverse needs of students, often in spite of already-limited …

The Lived Experiences Of Clinical Supervision For Stress Mitigation Among Master’S Counseling Students In Internship, Marcia Kay Lebeau
The Lived Experiences Of Clinical Supervision For Stress Mitigation Among Master’S Counseling Students In Internship, Marcia Kay Lebeau
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There is limited information on the lived experiences of stress mitigation in clinical supervision for master’s-level interns in Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP)-accredited counseling programs. There is a need for insight into how policy and supervision practices in counselor education programs can contribute to supporting and educating students during this time of professional and personal development and avoid negative personal and professional consequences. The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to gain an understanding of the lived experiences of supervision for master’s-level interns in CACREP-accredited counseling programs in relation to utilizing supervision for stress …
Phenomenology Via A Narrative Inquiry In Action: A Study Identifying Themes Of Persistence And Barriers Faced By African American Male Students In Their Pursuits Of Higher Education, Jeremiah Rotich
The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning
The use of phenomenology via a narrative inquiry is increasingly becoming popular in qualitative research study as it provides an unparalleled approach in sharing lived experiences. This article employs a narrative inquiry study to improve the understanding as to why Black male students (also known as African American male students) graduate from college at a lower rate than their Latino, White, and Asian counterparts in the United States. These narratives helped describe the barriers that have frustrated African American male students from persisting in higher education. Participants identified the lack of financial support, lack of cultural competency, lack of identity, …

Building A More Resilient Physician Assistant Student: Suggestions For Implementing Mindfulness-Based Training Into Didactic Education, Sarah Cornell
Theses and Graduate Projects
Background: Burnout affects a high number of healthcare providers and compromises both provider and patient wellbeing. In addition to high turnover rates, burnout costs healthcare systems through errors, poor care outcomes, and decreased patient satisfaction. Mindfulness-based therapy delivered by phone apps has been successful in improving stress levels and burnout measures. Based on similar research with medical students, physician assistant students may benefit from early stress-reduction interventions, although the research surrounding implementation and long-term follow up is lacking.
Objective: This cross-sectional study looks at burnout rates across three cohorts at a single Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies program …

Queering Pa School: An Audit Of Augsburg University’S Physician Assistant Program Regarding Lgbtq+ Related Health Topics, Annika Kuchar
Theses and Graduate Projects
Background: Historically LGBTQ+ people have encountered discrimination in the world of medicine, and often providers are sometimes unaware of how to manage medical issues of these patients. In order to best serve queer and trans patients, a more coherent, consistent curriculum needs to be established so that all medical professions are capable of giving high quality treatment to these patients. Physician assistants (PAs) are advanced practice providers who take care of LGBTQ+ patients on a daily basis and are trained under a similar model as physicians. PA programs must also be up to date on the most culturally sensitive ways …

The Relationship Between High-Impact Educational Practices (Hips) And Institutional Integration And Persistence: A Predictive-Correlational Design, Amy L. O'Dell
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this quantitative, predictive-correlational research study was to examine how well a linear combination of predictor variables, including course structure, is able to predict the levels of integration and rates of reenrollment among students at a regional, comprehensive university in the southwest. Higher education has a problem with attrition. Approximately 50% of undergraduates who begin their post-secondary education leave without completing a degree. Innovative classroom techniques, like high-impact practices (HIPs), may be a way to reduce student attrition. This study sought to investigate the affect that a unique HIP has on students’ levels of integration and rate of …

Understanding The Silos Of Assessment, Strategic Planning, Institutional Effectiveness, And Their Relationships To Accreditation, Dana Marie Juenemann
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this case study was to understand how collaboration, or lack of collaboration between community college-level silos, affected the process of accreditation as conducted by the Higher Learning Commission. The theory that guided this study is Smith’s theory of seven silos of higher education, as it explains the relationships between the areas of assessment, strategic planning, institutional effectiveness, and their impact on accreditation. This study sought to discover how collaboration and communication between administration, faculty, and staff, as well as between the silos of assessment, strategic planning, and institutional effectiveness, affected accreditation efforts at Moses Community College. The …

Thinking Blue / Writing Red: Marxism And The (Post)Human, Stephen C. Tumino
Thinking Blue / Writing Red: Marxism And The (Post)Human, Stephen C. Tumino
Publications and Research
Thinking Blue/Writing Red interrogates contemporary culture across a range of texts, from the pandemic (‘Covid’ and ‘Trump Speak’) to high theory (Melville's narratives) and popular culture (Beyoncé's ‘Formation’ and Super Bowl performance, Twin Peaks , metamodern ‘cli-fi’ films). Inspired by Derrida’s idea of the secret, Tumino examines the significance of social movements (Black Lives Matter, Occupy, alter-globalization) and naïve art (Darger, Ryden) to argue that these texts speak of the secrets that capitalism cannot speak. Contending that the cultural surfaces narrate only the ‘nonsecret,’ that to see the social logic of the culture one must dig into what Bruno Latour …

"Like Grasping At Wisps Of Smoke:" Interactional And Educational Challenges For College Students With Invisible Chronic Physical And Mental Conditions, Jennifer A. Butler, Daniel P. Modaff
Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal
Past research has explored the experiences of college students with chronic conditions from a variety of methodologies; however, student-driven, longer-term qualitative data is needed to explore how students with chronic conditions describe the challenges they face in attempting to manage their conditions and succeed in college. The current study gathered qualitative data in the form of daily journal entries over a 14-day period (pre-pandemic) from 23 college students who self-identified as having a chronic physical or mental condition. The themes were discussed through the lens of communication theory of resilience. We envision the management of student chronic illness as resiliency …
Developing Conflict Resolution Skills In Residential Students At Higher Education Institutions, Lindsey A. Bos
Developing Conflict Resolution Skills In Residential Students At Higher Education Institutions, Lindsey A. Bos
Masters Projects
For many college students, living on campus is the first experience that students have living outside their familial home. Students may take this leap with people they have developed prior relationships with, or with people they have just met. Regardless, this collision of differing norms has the potential to lead to interpersonal conflict. To support residential students at higher education institutions, this project utilizes the theoretical lenses of Maslow’s (1943) hierarchy of needs, Sanford’s (1966) challenge and support theory, and Chickering’s (1969) seven vectors of development to create a workshop curriculum aimed at developing students’ conflict resolution skills. Highlighting the …

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate student perceptions and utilization of mental health resources after participation in the UNMC Quick Check program.
Methods: For this limited pilot study, second-year pharmacy students were assigned to UNMC Quick Check appointments with UNMC …
Undocumented And Unsupported: How College Students Navigate To Meet Their Basic Needs, Mario Alberto Gonzalez
Undocumented And Unsupported: How College Students Navigate To Meet Their Basic Needs, Mario Alberto Gonzalez
Master's Theses
The cost of attendance at colleges and universities across the United States has risen exponentially year after year. Among these costs include tuition, lodging, food, textbooks, academic materials, and health care, many of which are considered “basic needs” that are ultimately essential for human survival. At the same time, certain groups of students continue to be marginalized and presented with additional barriers in accessing higher education in equitable ways. Undocumented students are one of these groups of students, and are the focus of this study. Although the passage of DACA in 2012 presented opportunities for approximately 800,000 undocumented students, it …
