Counseling Center Collaboration To Bridge The Gap For College Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Stephanie Sibley Psy.D., Kristen Mehr Ph.D.

Journal of Access, Retention, and Inclusion in Higher Education

As more individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) enter college, increased efforts should be made by university counseling centers to provide support and help ensure the success of these students. This article reviews the unique needs of college students with ASD and highlights the benefits of proactive, collaborative, and individualized mental health support. An existing outreach relationship between a university counseling center and that university’s Autism support program is described, and recommendations for how other counseling centers can develop similar programming are discussed. Covid-19 Impacts On College Students’ Basic Needs Insecurity, Megan K. Schraedley Ph.D., Ashlie B. Delshad Ph.D. Nov 2024

Covid-19 Impacts On College Students’ Basic Needs Insecurity, Megan K. Schraedley Ph.D., Ashlie B. Delshad Ph.D.

Journal of Access, Retention, and Inclusion in Higher Education

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, data clearly documented that college students experience a higher rate of basic needs insecurity, including food insecurity, than the general US population. COVID-19 both expanded the rate of basic needs insecurity and decreased the range of resources students had access to. In this study, we examined the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on college student basic needs insecurity through a qualitative photovoice study. Our research draws upon Yosso’s Community Cultural Wealth model and the concepts of navigational and social capital specifically. The findings indicate that students experienced heightened levels of basic needs insecurity during the …

ETSU News

Nov. 22, 2024

As the Fall semester winds down and we approach Thanksgiving next week, I want to share with you some college highlights and achievements that I’m thankful for this semester. I encourage each of you to reflect on this time, as well, and think about what you’re thankful for.

The devastation in our region after Hurricane Helene was heartbreaking, but it was inspiring to see our students, faculty, and staff step up to serve our region in countless ways including through ETSU’s “Bucs Rebuild Together” campaign. There are too many stories to tell here, and many remain anonymous, …

Librarian Instruction Of Researcher Profile Systems To Graduate Students: A Case Study, Caroline Monnin, Justin Fuhr

Journal of Graduate Librarianship

Introduction: Academic liaison librarians play a pivotal role in supporting graduate students with their scholarly endeavors, particularly research dissemination. Researcher profile systems (RPSs) are important for promoting academic work; they ensure name attribution and facilitate research distribution. Academic librarians are advocates of these systems and provide support and instruction for them. This article reports on a pre–post survey evaluating a library workshop on RPSs for graduate students, as well as the changes made to the workshop based on the results of the survey.

Methods: The authors co-taught a workshop about RPSs six times between 2021 and 2022. Pre- and post-surveys …

Professional Development For Library Interns: Creation Of A Guide And Program, Rebecca Hedreen, Jessica Bernier, Alexis Haakonsen, Jennifer Mottolese, Ariss Tiu Nov 2024

Professional Development For Library Interns: Creation Of A Guide And Program, Rebecca Hedreen, Jessica Bernier, Alexis Haakonsen, Jennifer Mottolese, Ariss Tiu

Journal of Graduate Librarianship

Seeing a need for more structured mentorship in library professional development, an internship supervisor created a reading guide for her interns at a mid-sized public university. The librarian and the first four interns who used the guide as part of their internship describe their experiences with this new reading program. Besides enabling the discovery of interesting articles and videos, we hope that the focus on professional development will encourage internship supervisors to include explicit mentorship in professional development and encourage interns to ask for more support in developing this crucial practice.

Helping Our Graduate Students Soar: Promoting Scholarship And Populating Our Institutional Repository, Elaine Wells Nov 2024

Helping Our Graduate Students Soar: Promoting Scholarship And Populating Our Institutional Repository, Elaine Wells

Journal of Graduate Librarianship

The author describes how a requirement that our graduate students deposit theses and dissertations into our institutional repository (SOAR) helped to build our online scholarship, educate and strengthen graduate students’ identities as scholars, and forge relationships with the library. Taking advantage of the synergy brought about by a new open access policy, a robust digital repository, and library staff committed to advancing accessible scholarly works, we developed ways to educate, encourage, and promote our newest scholars. Based upon our success thus far, we will develop workshops and tutorials that will be extended to junior faculty to advance their scholarly success.

Voluntary Early Retirement From Sport: The Lived Experiences Of Former Ncaa Diii Student-Athletes, Lindsey Darvin, Ryan Konotopskyj, Ashley Ryder Nov 2024

Voluntary Early Retirement From Sport: The Lived Experiences Of Former Ncaa Diii Student-Athletes, Lindsey Darvin, Ryan Konotopskyj, Ashley Ryder

Journal of Athlete Development and Experience

Intercollegiate athletics offer amateur athletes an approximately four-year window to pursue their athletic careers (Hodges & Darvin, 2022). While many athletes complete their full eligibility, some choose to retire early (Zvosec & Bass, 2022). At the NCAA Division III level, motivations for early retirement remain unclear, and the experiences of former student-athletes are often overlooked (Zvosec & Bass, 2022; Hodges & Darvin, 2022). Despite DIVISION III's large athlete population, research seldom delves into their experiences. This study aims to explore why former Division III athletes voluntarily leave their sport. Transitioning out of collegiate sports poses significant challenges, affecting athletes' identities, …

Navigating The Transition: Factors Impacting Academic Success And Challenges Faced By First Semester Student Athletes In College, Joseph Milone Edd, Deb Risisky Phd, Jim Macgregor Edd

Journal of Athlete Development and Experience

The purpose of this study was to better understand the factors that influenced first-semester college-athletes’ ability to succeed academically in the transition to collegiate life, focusing specifically on not only the factors that contributed to academic success but also those the athletes considered to be challenges or barriers during their first semester in college. Interviews (N = 9) were conducted with first-year college-athletes at a Division II regional university in the northeast United States over a two-year period to identify not only the factors that contributed to academic success but also those the athletes considered to be challenges or …
