Digital Inequalities And U.S. Undergraduate Outcomes Over The First Two Years Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Vikki Katz, Amy B. Jordan, Katherine Ognyanova

Communication Faculty Articles and Research

The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated major and rapid changes to undergraduate student learning conditions, but the longer-term consequences of those changes have yet to be fully understood. We assess how digital inequality—defined as challenges in accessing or maintaining a broadband internet connection and functional digital devices—affected undergraduates’ advancement toward on-time graduation over the first two years of the pandemic (2020-2022). We utilize survey data from a representative sample of 1,106 undergraduates at Rutgers University-New Brunswick, a public, 4-year university located in New Jersey, USA. Respondents were undergraduates who had been enrolled in full-time student status throughout the first two years …

How We Stopped Charging Students To Submit Etds: Case Study Of A Five-Year Odyssey, Gregory Wiedeman, Emily Kilcer Mar 2025

How We Stopped Charging Students To Submit Etds: Case Study Of A Five-Year Odyssey, Gregory Wiedeman, Emily Kilcer

Journal of Graduate Librarianship

In 2019, the Graduate School at the University at Albany, State University of New York wrote to the University Libraries about the processing of archival copies of electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs), hoping to reduce or eliminate deposit fees for authors. Interested library faculty and staff self-assembled into a project team and found that the university’s switch in 2008 to a born-digital submission workflow provided by an external vendor was deeply flawed as a service, and unnecessarily costly to student authors. Later, in 2013, the Libraries established an open access institutional repository (IR), which had the potential to support a …

The Effect Of Peer Mentoring On Stress Levels Of First-Semester Nursing Students, Sara K. Myers Mar 2025

The Effect Of Peer Mentoring On Stress Levels Of First-Semester Nursing Students, Sara K. Myers

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Abstract

Due to the immense complexities of nursing education, students in a program of nursing experience higher levels of stress when compared to other disciplines, which can lead to negative learning outcomes and attrition resulting in significant financial losses for academic institutions. Peer mentoring is an evidence-based strategy to support students by engaging in a mutual relationship, yielding positive learning outcomes through stress reduction for the mentee and the mentor. A quasi-experimental quantitative-qualitative study design will be performed to investigate the effects of a well-organized, supported peer mentoring program between first-semester nursing students and fourth-semester nursing students at Wichita State …

Enhancing University Retention Through Faculty/Staff Mentor-Mentee Relationships: An Interpersonal Communication Approach, Emma Catherine Richardson

Master's Theses

This study investigates the role of interpersonal communication in faculty and staff mentorship and its impact on undergraduate student retention, focusing on struggling students at Louisiana Tech University. With a national retention rate of 68.2% and persistent disparities among underrepresented groups, improving student retention remains a critical issue in higher education. The research addresses a gap in understanding how communication practices, such as active listening, empathy, and constructive feedback, influence mentorship effectiveness. Guided by Interpersonal Communication Theory and Social Support Theory, this qualitative study utilized semi-structured interviews with 12 undergraduate students. Thematic analysis revealed key findings: mentors who demonstrated empathy, …

Exploring The Leadership Identity Development Of Emerging Leaders Who Have Answered The Call To Academic Administration Within U.S. Higher Education, J. "Clay" Hurdle, Nicole Lamee Perez Stedman, Matthew Sowcik, Sebastian Galindo, R. Elaine Turner

Journal of Educational Leadership in Action

Leadership identity (also known as leader identity) has been established as a sub-identity of general self-concept. A greater degree of leadership identity could have implications for leadership self-efficacy. Research on leadership identity development in the last 20 years has mostly been quantitative with limited qualitative efforts. Exploring the leadership identity development of academic leaders remains mostly absent from the literature. Using the Leadership Identity Development Model, a descriptive qualitative study was conducted with cohort members of two national academic leadership development programs, the Food Systems Leadership Institute and LEAD21. Interviews explored participants’ leadership identity development during their careers leading up …

Environmental Justice And Ecology In Social Work Education: Emerging Trends Among Faculty., Keri Otte

Doctor of Social Work Capstone Projects

March 31, 2025

This paper presents a study of how social work educators in the U.S. are integrating environmental justice and ecological content into social work coursework and /or curriculum. Current literature in this area suggests that educators should be incorporating deep ecology philosophy, using experiential learning techniques, and moving away from anthropocentrism towards ecocentrism. Ten semi-structured interviews were conducted to gather data on pedagogical approaches, educator knowledge and previous training, and barriers to content integration. The interviews took place virtually with social work educators from five geographical areas in the United States. The findings illustrate the importance of transformative …

The Differences In Perceived Stress And Coping For Prelicensure Nursing Students After A Positive Reappraisal Coping Intervention, Deanna Lynne Walborn Feb 2025

The Differences In Perceived Stress And Coping For Prelicensure Nursing Students After A Positive Reappraisal Coping Intervention, Deanna Lynne Walborn

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Academic stress has become a common problem among nursing students, which can lead to undesirable student outcomes if their stress goes unabated. The purpose of this quasi-experimental pretest/posttest study is to determine if an intervention using a positive reappraisal coping intervention (PRCI) can reduce student nurse stress. Knowles’ theory of adult learning along with Lazarus and Folkman’s transactional model of stress and coping (TMSC) provided a foundation for the study. Olejnik’s (1984) table was used to determine the minimal total sample size required for this research. A sample of 26 nursing students from those who are enrolled in a public …

Metacognitive Awareness And Learning Approaches Among Graduate Students, Yuewei Shi, Leslie Cordie Feb 2025

Metacognitive Awareness And Learning Approaches Among Graduate Students, Yuewei Shi, Leslie Cordie

Journal of Graduate Education Research

This study explored the relationship between metacognitive awareness and learning approaches in two groups of graduate students: direct-pathway students and adult graduate students. Direct-pathway students transitioned directly from their undergraduate programs to graduate school, while adult graduate students had delayed entry, typically after age 25 and after working for several years. To investigate differences between the two groups, we utilized a self-reported survey incorporating the Metacognitive Awareness Inventory (MAI) and the Study Skills Inventory for Students (ASSIST). Survey data was analyzed to determine if the groups differed in their metacognitive awareness and learning approaches. The findings revealed that adult graduate …

Introducing A Non-Zero Post-Humanistic Framework For Problem Solving In Design Education, Louise Kolff, Robert Haubt Feb 2025

Introducing A Non-Zero Post-Humanistic Framework For Problem Solving In Design Education, Louise Kolff, Robert Haubt

Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai

This paper proposes an innovative framework within interdisciplinary higher education courses that integrates non-zero post-humanistic design thinking and the concept of embodiment for addressing problem solving. We explore how design education can move from a human-centered approach, to a post-humanistic more-than-human approach. Central to our approach is "non- zero" thinking, emphasising collaborative solutions that benefit all stakeholders—human and non- human—recognising our shared responsibilities within ecosystems. We also introduce the notion of qualia in design education, highlighting how immersive experiences can evoke deeper emotional responses, fostering empathy and a greater understanding of complex problems. This combined approach achieves three key outcomes …

Creativity As Dialogue: Navigating Change Together, Chantell Cosner

Payne Center for Leadership Development Student Leadership Conference

Breakout Session #2Theoretical physicist David Bohm described group creativity as “thinking together,” linking it to the practice of dialogue. In ambiguous and challenging environments, our connection to each other can help us produce new ideas, engage in creative action, and facilitate innovation. In this session, we will explore the idea of social creativity, its link to dialogue, and how these principles can be applied in our teams at work, school, and home. We will also learn how leaders can play a crucial role in fostering creativity within their teams and communities, even when faced with the unknown.

Mastering Your Inner Dialogue, Adie Segadelli

Payne Center for Leadership Development Student Leadership Conference

Breakout Session #2I propose the idea of crushing your inner critic and embracing your inner mentor to live a more full and hopeful life. I will present in a workshop style with activities to open people's eyes to the critic. My goal is to help people understand how much our critics can control our lives and how sometimes we haven't met our mentor. I recently took a weekend class that presented this idea, and it provoked a lot of change in me and how I approach my life now.
