Master Plan: Achieving Distinctiveness And Excellence In Form, Function, And Design At Illinois State University 2000-2020, Office Of The President

Master Plan

Educating Illinois defines our vision: to be the first-choice public university in Illinois for high-achieving, motivated students by providing a small-college experience with large-university opportunities. The Master Plan supports our academic mission and service operations by providing physical development guidelines and design standards for the campus of Illinois State University. At Illinois State University, students, faculty, and staff work together to advance teaching, learning, and scholarship. Our campus is collegiate, traditional, and stately, and it emphasizes our prominence and stature as Illinois' first public university. Continuing these traditions, The Master Plan has three main themes: 1) reinforcing the benefits of …

Attitudes In Physics Education: An Alternative Approach To Teaching Physics To Non-Science College Students, V. A. Niculescu, J. P. Chinnici, B. L. Brown Jan 2000

Attitudes In Physics Education: An Alternative Approach To Teaching Physics To Non-Science College Students, V. A. Niculescu, J. P. Chinnici, B. L. Brown

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

In this article, we present an alternative way of teaching conceptual physics for non-science majors by depicting the role of physics in today's technology. The goal of this approach is to increase in the minds of non-science students the acceptance of physics as a useful component in general education, and as a major tool in comprehending the present-day technological world experienced by students outside the classroom.

Getting Lecturers To Take Discussion Seriously, Stephen Brookfield, Stephen Preskill Jan 2000

Getting Lecturers To Take Discussion Seriously, Stephen Brookfield, Stephen Preskill

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

In this chapter we examine how faculty resistant to experimenting with discussion methods can be encouraged to take them seriously. We begin by acknowledging and addressing publicly the objections to using discussion most frequently raised by skeptical faculty. We then turn to proposing what we believe are the most common reasons why attempts to use discussion sometimes fail: that teachers have unrealistic expectations of the method, that students are unprepared, that reward systems in the classroom are askew, and that teachers have not modeled their own participation in, and commitment to, discussion methods. For each of these reasons we suggest …

Examination Of Student-Active Learning Practices In A College/Middle School Educational Collaboration, S. Prattis, I. Czerwiec Jan 2000

Examination Of Student-Active Learning Practices In A College/Middle School Educational Collaboration, S. Prattis, I. Czerwiec

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

A college and middle school student teaching collaboration was developed to interest more college students in teaching K-12 science, to enhance diversity among K-16 teaching faculties, and to inspire the K-12 students to expand their knowledge beyond their classroom curriculum. To assess our results, we used a modified Likert survey instrument and self-reflective analysis in middle school and college students, respectively. Overall, middle school students expressed satisfaction in the science learning in which they participated. In addition, college students reported that they learned specific content when made responsible for teaching material to younger students. Collaborative projects such as this one …

The Stcc Science Teaching Intern Project, N. Rapoport Jan 2000

The Stcc Science Teaching Intern Project, N. Rapoport

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

The Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) Science Teaching Intern Project was implemented as a pilot study to give community college students an opportunity to experience science teaching. At the same time, it provided seventh graders in inner city middle schools opportunities to interact with college students and to take advantage of science resources not usually available to them. Interns attended weekly meetings and participated in an all-day science field trip at the college. Most participants also made observations in a middle school science classroom and presented a science activity in the classroom. Not only did the project provide a partnership …

A General Chemistry Course For Prospective Elementary School Teachers, M. S. Lazarus Jan 2000

A General Chemistry Course For Prospective Elementary School Teachers, M. S. Lazarus

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

The paper describes a general chemistry course designed for students who are planning to become elementary school teachers. The course has been structured so as to transmit the fun and excitement of experiencing chemistry and uncovering its basic principles by centering on laboratory and other discovery experiences. In addition, the course uses peer led workshops in which the students discuss these experiences. The course is thus a product of a particularly strong collaboration between public schools and college faculties. It is going to become a part of a new four-course sequence that will be required of all students intending to …

Active Learning In Sophomore Mathematics: A Cautionary Tale, M. Eisenberg

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

Math 245: Multivariate Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations with Computer I is the first half of a year-long sophomore sequence that emphasizes the subjects' interconnections and grounding in real-world applications. The sequence is aimed primarily at students from physical and mathematical sciences and engineering. In Fall, 1998, as a result of my affiliation with the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Teacher Education Collaborative (STEMTEC), I continued and extended previously-introduced reforms in Math 245, including: motivating mathematical ideas with real-world phenomena; student use of computer technology; and, learning by discovery and experimentation. I also introduced additional pedagogical strategies for more …

Now & Then: The Appalachian Magazine,Volume 17, Issue 03, published in 2000. The theme of this issue is Museums and Archives. This issue explores how museums and archival institutions shape public memory and regional identity in Appalachia, examining efforts to reinterpret the past with greater accuracy and complexity. Through features on community museums, restored schoolhouses, literary manuscript collections, nuclear history exhibits, and emerging virtual archives, it considers how preservation initiatives balance tourism, education, and historical truth. Essays, fiction, poetry, and reviews further analyze the narratives museums choose to elevate, questioning romanticized paradigms and highlighting tensions between authenticity and marketability, …

Along The Red Road: Tribally Controlled Colleges And Student Development, Ann Marie Machamer Jan 2000

Along The Red Road: Tribally Controlled Colleges And Student Development, Ann Marie Machamer

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

American Indian tnibally controlled colleges were created to provide higher education in a familiar cultural setting to a population that is severely underrepresented in American higher education. Since little is known regarding student development at tribal colleges, the purpose of this study was to assess retention, talent development, satisfaction, racial discrimination, and cultural knowledge/identity at tribal colleges using American Indians who attended non-Indian institutions as a comparison sample. In early 1999, survey data were collected from students who entered fourteen tribal colleges and two Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) colleges and from American Indian students who entered non-Indian. institutions in …

The Relationship Between A Required Self-Disclosure Speech And Public Speaking Anxiety: Considering Gender Equity, Deanna D. Sellnow, Tamara Golish Jan 2000

The Relationship Between A Required Self-Disclosure Speech And Public Speaking Anxiety: Considering Gender Equity, Deanna D. Sellnow, Tamara Golish

Basic Communication Course Annual

This study examines the relationship between a required self-disclosure speech and public speaking anxiety levels expressed by student speakers. If students report higher anxiety levels when asked to self-disclose during a speech, then the potential classroom climate warming advantages of such an assignment may not outweigh the disadvantages. Results indicated: (1) that most students did not report increased anxiety when presenting the self-disclosure speech; (2) there appeared to be no significant gender differences with regard to anxiety and self-disclosure in a public speaking situation; (3) students revealed that feeling confident, in control, and respected are primary factors necessary to reduce …
