Becoming A Scholar: Everything I Needed To Know I Learned On Sabbatical, Steven Maranville Aug 2011

Becoming A Scholar: Everything I Needed To Know I Learned On Sabbatical, Steven Maranville

Higher Learning Research Communications

The essence of being a faculty member is to be a scholar. And, the work of a scholar is to think. However, the demands of academic life correlated with mid-career concerns can form a distraction away from this essential activity. As such, the goal of this essay is to discuss matters of professional development for tenured business professors at teaching-oriented universities. These faculty members are at particular risk of a career plateau accompanied by diminished productivity and satisfaction. Employing autoethnographic methods, the author reflects on his personal experience and posits initiatives for career revitalization, positing that professional development is vital …

Blended Learning As An Effective Pedagogical Paradigm For Biomedical Science, Perry Hartfield Aug 2011

Blended Learning As An Effective Pedagogical Paradigm For Biomedical Science, Perry Hartfield

Higher Learning Research Communications

Blended learning combines face-to-face class based and online teaching and learning delivery in order to increase flexibility in how, when, and where students study and learn. The development, integration, and promotion of blended learning in frameworks of curriculum design can optimize the opportunities afforded by information and communication technologies and, concomitantly, accommodate a broad range of student learning styles. This study critically reviews the potential benefits of blended learning as a progressive educative paradigm for the teaching of biomedical science and evaluates the opportunities that blended learning offers for the delivery of accessible, flexible and sustainable teaching and learning experiences. …

Educational Attainment: Success To The Successful, Peter John Anthony, David Gould, Gina Smith Aug 2011

Educational Attainment: Success To The Successful, Peter John Anthony, David Gould, Gina Smith

Higher Learning Research Communications

Systems archetypes are patterns of structure found in systems that are helpful in understanding some of the dynamics within them. The intent of this study was to examine educational attainment data using the success-to-the-successful archetype as a model to see if it helps to explain the inequality observed in the data. Data covering 1990 to 2009 was collected from the United States Census Bureau for the United States, as well as for the States of Georgia and Washington. Findings indicated that this archetype is useful in explaining the variation, and there are several other terms and concepts that are helpful …

Net Operating Losses, Philip E. Harris Aug 2011

Net Operating Losses, Philip E. Harris

Rural Tax Education

Weather, disease and variable prices for inputs and commodities cause farmer’s income to fluctuate from one year to the next. Farmers can minimize their income tax liability by managing the timing of their income and deductions to keep their taxable income level. In some cases, the leveling technique is not enough to avoid a spike in taxable income or a dip that causes taxable income to go below zero. The tax effect of the spikes can be minimized with income averaging rules. The tax effect of the dips below zero can be managed with the net operating loss (NOL) rules …

Strategic Implications Of Corporate Social Responsibility In Hotel Industry: A Comparative Research Between Nh Hotels And Meliá Hotels International, Marina Mattera, Alberto Moreno Melgarejo

Higher Learning Research Communications

The hospitality industry serves millions of people globally and is a multibillion-dollar industry with a significant growth expectation in the upcoming years. The Spanish tourism industry is one of the most developed sectors of the nation, being one of the main contributors to the country’s GDP. On a world wide scale, and specifically in the European context, there is a rising awareness for firms’ actions to be responsible towards the environment and the community in which they operate. Based on “triple bottom line” guidelines, companies’ mission in such a context is achieving competitive advantage by means of a business model …

Economic Competition, Sustainability, And Survival Endurance: The Extinction Of The Dodo, The Easter Island Case, And The Tragedy Of The Commons Effect, Pedro Moreira Jul 2011

Economic Competition, Sustainability, And Survival Endurance: The Extinction Of The Dodo, The Easter Island Case, And The Tragedy Of The Commons Effect, Pedro Moreira

Higher Learning Research Communications

A fast developing industry worldwide, tourism demands a monumental extent of resources, and at times devastates and condemns the very own environments that are fundamental to the economic survival of organizations and the sustainability of travel destinations. The purpose of the study is to link three established scientific themes on survival and sustainability to empirical results in the field of economic decision and behavior. The discussion of this link may also represent the originality value of the paper. Departing from the results of a series of decision games obtained under a quasi-experimental design, behavioral patterns were analyzed and extrapolated to …
