JOHNSON CITY (Nov. 3, 2020) – Dr. Erik Petersen, assistant professor in East Tennessee State University College of Public Health’s Department of Health Sciences, has received $300,000 to study Salmonella sensing-based antibacterials for use in poultry.
The award is a collaborative bi-national grant with Dr. Erez Mills from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Rehovot, Israel.
“Currently, among the food-borne zoonoses, or diseases that are spread between animals and people, Salmonellosis has become a frequent major public health concern,” Petersen said.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates Salmonella bacteria cause about 1.35 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations, and …

(November 3, 2020) The opportunity to work as a graduate assistant at the Basler Center for Physical Activity was a deciding factor for Austin Seay when he was looking for a graduate program in sport management.
“I had worked in campus recreation while I was an undergraduate, and when I toured the ETSU facility and met the staff, it all clicked,” Seay said. “I knew this campus was the place for me.”
Seay is currently the graduate assistant for business operations and helps oversee member services. This includes providing leadership for the student staff, selling memberships to new patrons and …

Teacher Education In A Dangerous Time: (Re)Imagining Education For Diversity, Democracy And Sustainability, John J. Lupinacci
Northwest Journal of Teacher Education
This article amplifies the importance of social movements like Black Lives Matter and diverse critical educator responses to social suffering, COVID-19, and related critiques of current dominant assumptions of teacher education and Western schooling. The author offers an ecocritical conceptual framework to support education to recognize the importance of how teachers, and teacher educators, can take action as leaders (re)imagining education in support of valuing diversity, democracy, and sustainability. This club is meant for middle schoolers who want to learn about science while also having a creative outlet. Learn about different areas of science throughout land, ocean, and space. Responding To Xenophobia: Politics, Populisms And Our Teaching, Phyllis E. Vanslyck
Publications and Research
This essay explores ways faculty in the humanities may guide students through current manifestations of populism, specifically, this movement’s encouragement of xenophobia. As a member of an English department at a public community college in the United States, I argue, first, that community college students, who often have deep personal connections to the experiences of immigrants, may respond to the anti-immigrant rhetoric in useful and provocative ways. Second, I suggest that the related history of anti-immigration sentiment in American politics since the beginning of the 20th century can provide students with a powerful context for understanding xenophobia today.
