Ecology Of The Eastern Cottonmouth (Agkistrodon P. Piscivorus) At Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge: A Comparative Study Of Natural And Anthropogenic Marsh Habitats, Chad Lee Cross

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Mark-recapture sampling and radiotelemetry were used to investigate populations of the eastern cottonmouth, Agkistrodon p. piscivorus, in both natural and anthropogenic marsh habitats at Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge (BBNWR), Virginia Beach, Virginia from autumn 1995 to late spring 1998. Mark-recapture subjects were captured, marked by ventral scale-clipping, and released back into the population. A modified Schnabel Census estimator was used to estimate population sizes and corresponding densities in both marsh systems based on a total of 244 captures of 222 individuals. Most snakes were found >0.05 in from water, but it was apparent that proximity to water played …

Plant Community Changes Over 54 Years Within The Great Basin Experimental Range, Manti-La Sal National Forest, Scott C. Walker, David K. Mann, E. Durant Mcarthur

Aspen Bibliography

Plant community changes and natural succession over time impact forage values, watershed quality, wildlife habitat, and ecosystem dynamics. Comparisons were made between a vegetation map of community types completed in 1937 by the U.S. Forest Service, and vegetation maps compiled in 1990 of the same areas by satellite imagery, and through 1991 areal photo interpretation combined with ground truthing. The study area includes nearly all of the drainage in Ephraim Canyon located in central Utah which consists of 6,027 acres (2,439 ha). Elevation ranges from 6,600 to 10,400 feet (2,040 to 3,210 m). Vegetation types ranged from pinyon-juniper woodland through …

Comparative Gas-Exchange In Leaves Of Intact And Clipped, Natural And Planted Cherrybark Oak (Quercus Pagoda Raf.) Seedlings, Brian Roy Lockhart, John D. Hodges Jan 1994

Comparative Gas-Exchange In Leaves Of Intact And Clipped, Natural And Planted Cherrybark Oak (Quercus Pagoda Raf.) Seedlings, Brian Roy Lockhart, John D. Hodges

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Gas-exchange measurements, including CO2 -exchange rate (net photosynthesis), stomatal conductance, and transpiration, were conducted on intact and clipped cherrybark oak (Quercus pagoda Raf.) seedlings growing in the field and in a nursery bed. Seedlings in the field, released from midstory and understory woody competition, showed significant increases in gas-exchange compared to non-released seedlings due to increases in light levels reaching seedlings. Concurrently, little difference occurred in the CO2 -exchange rate between intact and clipped seedlings in the released treatment although clipped seedlings maintained a consistently greater rate of stomatal conductance. In order to reduce the high variability of light levels …

An Ecological Study Of The Cumberland Plateau Salamander, Plethodon Kentucki Mittleman, In West Virginia, Jeffrey E. Bailey

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

A study was conducted to determine various aspects of the ecology of Plethodon kentucki in West Virginia. Results of studies on range and distribution revealed that P. kentucki is limited to southwestern counties in West Virginia. A population of P. kentucki at Beech Fork State Park was extremely seasonal with regard to activity. Seasonal activity was not significantly correlated with air temperature, soil temperature, air relative humidity, or soil pH. Seasonal activity was significantly correlated with soil moisture. Critical Thermal Maxima and dehydration values were not significantly different between f· kentucki and its congener, P. glutinosus, thus each is equally …

A Management Plan For The Conifer Plantations At St. John's, Collegeville, Minnesota, Paul Schwietz Osb

Saint John’s Abbey Publications

This paper describes and analyzes the 120 acres of conifer plantations at St. John's Abbey, defines the objectives of management and proposes a 10 year plan for the maintenance and improvement of the plantations. This management plan emphasizes the non-profit corporation's sense of stewardship with multiple use goals. The protection of natural resources is assumed. Aesthetic and recreational values are high priorities, yet educational uses, wildlife protection and timber production are also important considerations. The plan also assumes that forest management at Saint John's will be self-sustaining. Thus the revenue derived from harvesting and thinning will be used to support …

The Effects Of Seed Size And Maternal Origin On The Distribution Of Individual Plant Size In Ludwigia Leptocarpa (Onagraceae), Rebecca W. Dolan Oct 1984

The Effects Of Seed Size And Maternal Origin On The Distribution Of Individual Plant Size In Ludwigia Leptocarpa (Onagraceae), Rebecca W. Dolan

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Seed size is normally distributed for many annual species, while mature plant size is frequently positively skewed. A study was conducted to determine the influence of seed size and the role of genetic differences in determining relative seedling size for Ludwigia leptocarpa. Seed size had a significant effect on percentage germination and time of seed germination but no effect on dry weight or leaf area of seedlings. Seed size and spacing had a significant effect on seedling dry weight for plants grown under competition, while relative day of emergence had no effect. Familial (genetic) differences were found in average seed …

Studies On The Causes Of Tree Distribution In A Forest Type In The Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, Thomas A. Janszen Apr 1974

Studies On The Causes Of Tree Distribution In A Forest Type In The Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, Thomas A. Janszen

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Vegetational composition and environmental parameters were analyzed in a forest type of the Dismal Swamp. A 0.5 ha forest stand was divided into 200 5 x 5 meter contiguous quadrats and the tree size classes were precisely mapped. Fifty soil samples were analyzed for texture, pH, and major nutrients. A topographic map was constructed with precision to 0.01 ft. Analysis of variance tests showed non-randomness to exist in soil texture and nutrient content while homogeneity tests showed non-randomness in distribution of some woody species. Factor analysis indicated no significant correlations between soil quality, topography, and woody species. Findings indicate that …

Enemies Of Aspen, Clyde M. Christensen, Ralph L. Anderson, A. C. Hodson, Paul O. Rudolf

Aspen Bibliography

So long as aspen was considered primarily a weed species, there was little concern over the enemies which might injure or destroy it. Sometimes these enemies were actually considered "blessings in disguise. Now, however, that aspen not only is the most abundant "but also one of the most widely utilized tree species in the Lake States, there is increasing interest in anything that may affect its future supply. For that reason this brief summary of information on the enemies of aspen has been assembled.

Trenched Plots Under Forest Canopies, James W. Toumey, Raymond Kienholz Jan 1931

Trenched Plots Under Forest Canopies, James W. Toumey, Raymond Kienholz

Yale School of the Environment Bulletin Series

The relative importance of light and soil moisture in particular is better known than that of other environmental factors. We are coming to believe that the nature and condition of the reproduction and other surface vegetation beneath living canopies are not due to any single factor such as light or soil moisture, but to a complex of factors.

Further Studies In The Ecotone Between Prairie And Woodland, R. J. Pool, J. E. Weaver, F. C. Jean

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

A series of intensive investigations of the ecological features of the tension zone between prairie and woodland in the Mississippi valley was begun by Weaver and Thiel in 1915. These studies were continued for two seasons in Minnesota and were also extended to the prairies of eastern Nebraska in 1916. These investigations represent the first attempt to attack the prairie-forest problem on a comprehensive scale by means of the quantitative methods of modern ecology. Some of the results secured from these studies have been published as the first paper of a series planned to deal with critical investigations in the …
